I just watched Innocence myself. I'm also the type who prefers NGE 24/25 to EoE, so take it as you will, but I fucking loved it. Haven't got around to the SAC series yet, though. Some fucking brilliant movies I should have watched sooner, that's for certain.

Seconding that Lain rec, too.

Gits is one of the most realistic and aesthetic movie anime. Live-action can't "draw" them in the first place. 3DCGI is better.
Director Oshii tried it in live-action though, not to mention, went wrong as an art. Although James Cameron seemed to like it, Avalon.

If I could craft a Lain experience for somebody, I'd tell them to play the game first. Good luck finding it, or even playing it since there was no official translated releases. There are playthroughs on youtube, so that'll have to do. Then, spend 7 hours and marathon it.

Didn't understand a reference? Do some homework. Repeat: game, anime, homework. There's a lot of depth there, and most people skip out on the game (I don't blame them) and just read/watch an interpretation.

How much anime have you seen? I can't believe you'd honestly dislike the medium in general if you actually liked Ghost in the Shell. There is no other medium where you'll find so many similar works to it.
