I had a friend watch Fate/Zero and then immediately after watch ufotable's UBW. He was pretty pissed off that the tone of UBW was a complete 180 from Zero's.

I'm inclined to agree. But F/SN was some shitty eroge before it became anything else, so shittiness was already ingrained from the start.

I got him into watching the KnK movies now. So far so good.

Ironically, one of the defining traits of the Fifth War was really that half the participants actually didn't give a damn about Grail or the "wish" cover-up. They all had their reasons to act, but most of these had nothing to do with actually getting the Grail. Also, they in general all were better Masters than the Masters from the previous war, despite not being quite so ruthless in their methods. They may have been less prepared and less willing to just go full "battle royale" mode, so it might seem at first as if they're not treating it seriously, but they in general make better decisions based on their priorities and have less exploitable flaws. They're competent, it's just that they aren't as well-prepared and also Grail isn't the main priority anymore for most of them. Shirou wouldn't cross anybody for an easy win because of his ideals, Rin can't cross Shirou, arguably one of the easiest targets without her helping him, even when it would help her and doesn't want to kill anybody without reason, Ilya is really more concerned about Shirou and Kiritsugu than the Grail, Caster is the most ruthless one, but knows exactly what a Grail is and so doesn't care about actually killing Masters, both Assassins don't care about anything, Shinji is pathetic and Sakura only cares about her Senpai, Kotomine and Gil basically do everything for fun in most routes and aren't treating the war too seriously, Zouken only gets into action once the entire Wars is in shambles and Archer knows what Grail is for obvious reasons.
The win condition for the Fourth War was eliminate every other Master. The win condition for the Fifth War participants isn't so well-defined.

Got a couple of questions regarding the corruption of the grail and its importance in F/Z. Call me a filthy secondary all you want but these confuses me.
1. Is the grail unable to grant wishes you yourself don't know the means to regardless of if it is corrupted or not?
2. If Kiritsugu had accepted would Irisviel have been properly brought back, or would it still just be Angra Mainyu taking on her personality and looks?

If the answer to the first question is yes, then it really didn't matter if the grail was corrupted or not, as his wish would never be realized. Aside from the city burning down and him being cursed, but that was just salt in the wound really.
