What particular set of traits makes these gateway anime
/a/ called me a faggot for liking them
I've never seen Naruto or SAO but the rest appeal to edgy teens who want to be different. Considering most of them are pretty dark, they're different from typical western shows and allow your average teenage /a/non to watch something that would make a good Linkin Park video.
Death Note was pretty obscure by the time of the release. Same for the pre-anime JoJo era.

that's a bit too far ranging to be a reference.
All of them aren't about moeblobs

Easy to get into, some appealing elements (could be anything, whether it's in the premise, the setting, the story, etc.), and not too many elements that could alienate mainstream audiences (i.e. excess fanservice).

Naw, there's plenty of non-edgy gateway series (i.e. Pokemon, Nadia).

Gateway anime means that there is minor amounts of direct jap cultural references & "otaku only XD" shit.
Generally speaking, normie audiences don't like feeling stupid or confused when engaged by the electric jew. Native language & subtitle acceptance on TV/movies is only a recently accepted phenomena. No one is going to want to be explained why a joke they didn't even catch is supposed to be funny, or why a seemingly innocuous gesture/phrase was supposed to impart gravitas, but didn't.

I don't know for SAO cause i haven't watched it because i am not a phaggot BUT
These anime attract normal people because they don't revolve around pedoshit you sick fucks keep circlejerking about every single day till your death
