Anyway, I never liked GX when I tried it, so that leaves 5Ds. Both have separate stories from my understanding. The anime was first, but I don't want to go through both, honestly.

As far as I know, all yugioh manga have a smaller story than the anime. However, since the manga focuses far less in promoting cards (even though they have their own exclusives) the story doesn't get affected by heavy milking.

Take the GX manga for example: Jaden only duels with Masked Heroes THRICE, two of which he loses the duel. And Dark Law is an effectless fusion.

So, if you are want quicker, far less complex plot, the manga is your choice. For the anime, all yugioh have their upsides and downsides. GX only gets good by season 3, 5D's goes downhill after some point, Zexal starts bad then gets better (also has the most emotional moments in all Yugiohs) and Arc-V is kind of like 5D's, but better in the beginning, but becomes worse than 5D's worse later.

I still find this whole exchange kind of forced and badly written to be honest. Reiji had always shown himself to be supportive of Reira before this duel. I remember when he defended Reira joining the Lancers when everyone else was saying he wasn't fit to join. In Synchro he mentioned many times how he was proud Reira was developing his "sense of self."

I find it odd that all of a sudden Reira decides to turn on him to save Ray for some dumb reason, and then Reiji is shown to have always underestimated him and never really thought highly of him. Then he acknowledges Reira again. They went backwards for no reason but this show is consistent at being very inconsistent with characterization.
