I don't often ask for help when reading porn, but this one line is really confusing me. Anyone feel like helping me out? It's the 『ねぇ一回なんて』 part at the bottom of the page. https://exhentai.org/s/e81e53d69f/997822-296 I’m not sure what she’s saying, something about only doing it once? Not sure if it’s relating to the line in pic related.

I know what なんてmeans, I said that I don't understand the bubble as a whole. It's the 言わずもっとしません that's getting me. 言わず is negative. The only guess I have is "Hey, I said only once right?" But the "I do it with Taniguchi every morning so it's no problem." doesn't match up with that.

Just so you know, many of these fonts have erraneous pre-JIS-2004 characters. Including all the 教科書体 fonts except for FC Kyoka (F5 something in the filename, I think). Because of that, when I made my own font test thing, I had a whole array of "how does this font handle X, typically" stuff on display.

In short, fonts without red or dots are complete?

I recognize that "口七" character from the list of 4 joyo kanji I couldn't render with a new font I've installed, so I figure this table of yours is pretty useful - I just have to study this more carefully (and preferably before the government alters something else...).

tl;dr:
Before 2004, JIS had premature simplifications.

Then, in 2004, they undid them.

In 2010, they added some of the affected characters to the Joyo set. The official forms for these joyo kanji are the non-simplified ones.

Fonts from before 2004 will display the affected joyo incorrectly.

Confusing as fuck, wish he had used a language I know to better feel it.
But I've read about creating "Chinese English" once in this pretty interesting article:
http://www.zompist.com/yingzi/yingzi.htm

All in all I think trying to adapt kana, specifically, was a bad idea, because it is not very well adapted to Dutch phonology.

I'll give it a more thorough analysis when I have the time, since this guy seems to have done his homework. Thanks for the link.

ITHVNR is smart and knows how PPSSPP works internally. That's the only reason it works at all. Hook any text is for things that aren't understood internally by normal texthookers.
>>
>>149934007
Couldn't get it to work with ITHVNR, did I do something wrong?
>>
>>149934134
Might just not be finding a good hook for the game you're trying. Hooking emulators is relatively new shit, I used to, and still have some scripts in photoshop to rip the text from screen shots, and put it on a better contrasting background so I could use kanjitomo which was a real pain. So be grateful? I don't know, but it might be that you need a different hook, or it might be that it just doesn't work for the game you're trying.
>>
>>149934134
Not necessarily. Game could just be hard to hook. Hook any text is a good backup plan tool.
>>
>>149933318
出来ない。 (´・ω・`)
>>
>>149933446
I'm not sure it's poorly adapted or we're just unfamiliar with Dutch phonology and can't recognize the phonemes easily. I thought kana English was completely fucked before I started to understand the logic. It doesn't help that I'm ESL so the pronunciation is still somewhat arcane to me.
Using か゚ for x and り゜to differentiate ri from li was brilliant.

This is a pretty neat explanation too.
>>
I wish there was a text hooker for older games that are easier to emulate, like ps1 and ps2 or even SNES.
>>
>>149934550
Well, he doesn't seem to cover the kana in his text, is it borrowing from this kana English system you mentioned?

I see there's an ん with a dakuten for ng, so if there are modifications like that and re-appropriation of some kanas to better represent its phonetics, it could work.

Not entirely, though, English has thousands of possible syllables. That's why I feel borrowing kanas might limit it with an "Engrish" flavor. Dutch is probably complex too, and you'd have to limit your vocabulary to more simple words.

Unless he went the chinese way and there is no way to kana-fy some kanji'd words, as their sound is exclusive to the logogram. Then you could perhaps cover all the necessary core sounds and leave kanas only for auxiliary particles and whatnot.
>>
>>149935082
>I wish there was a text hooker for older games that are easier to emulate, like ps1 and ps2 or even SNES.
>ps2
>easy to emulate
PS2 emulation is buggy as fuck, even more so for nip games no one has ever heard of since no one put effort into it to make them run.

>のだ is actually more broad than ものだ

>Sentenceのだ is used when the speaker is explaining or asking for an explanation about information shared with the hearer.

>Because the speaker presents a situation before もの(だ) as if it were a tangible object, this structure tends to convey differing degrees of emotion. Key Sentences (A) through (F) represent emotive excuse, exclamation, nostalgic reminiscence, desire, indirect command and conviction, respectively.

?????

Please just help me understand.
This has been bothering me for a long while.
>>
>>149940305
のだ is the simple version of the construction. ものだ is used when the speaker is trying to put on a certain kind of emphasis. This happens in fewer situations.

The explanations saying "tangible object" are awkward contortions around the grammatical differences between japanese and most western languges. They don't describe any of the nuances. They're a bad attempt at reforming the syntax without using linguistics terminology.

Meh, I'm past 7k words and I'm in the same spot - but I've noticed I am actually making some progress just from hearing the sample sentences and animoo.

I feel the moment I grab Tae Kim and a few books this thing is going to progress really fast.

That's what happened to me in English when I knew a lot of scattered information from playing games, but actually read my school's textbook: I already knew everything contained there, I just didn't know the rules on how to glue stuff together.

There is a lot of hidden grammar in Anki too, when you learn terms like 見ず知らず, 実は and 正に there are already stems being used grammatically and, even though you learn them as an isolated word, you get used with the function that word has and it's easy to replace it by other words using the same particle/stem.

Of course I'm saying all that from my perspective of a very chill ankidrone in no rush to utilize the language - if you're suffering from all this dekinai, you might as well start to force yourself through some production exercise. I talk to myself a lot in Japanese, even though I lack the grammar to do it properly, just to keep my vocabulary mental navigation in check.
>>
>>149940380
>The explanations saying "tangible object" are awkward contortions around the grammatical differences between japanese and most western languges
Why do you say that? I think that's a pretty good description, if a bit literal. Not the guy you're talking to by the way.
>>
>>149939735
>I know around 3-4k words
That's really not that much. Starting composing sentences early isn't necessarily good. It will take a couple hundred hours of reading before you really acquire common grammar, and even still you will be far from native. So if you rush production it just means you'll be producing a lot of wrong japanese.
>>
>>149940493
Being literal is why it's a bad explanation.

You don't describe 食べていた by saying "The speaker represents the action as a state of being that has already ended", just like you don't explain "have eaten" as "the speaker expresses past possession of a state in order to show that the state has already ended".

Auxiliaries don't have the semantics that their non-auxiliary forms have.

>>149940418
I read half of Tae Kim already, I just need some practice.

But I don't have the balls to use 8lang or hellotalk yet, cause Tae Kim that fucking nigger demotivated me.

>"if you don't know how to say it already then you don't know how to say it"
>"don't even try you won't get it right most of the time"
Now that's some nice advice, thank you Kim.
>>
>>149940728
Okay, here.
のだ is a general thing that's usually used like ['cause X] but pops up in other situations too.
ものだ is like のだ but it implies that the speaker thinks that whatever they're talking about is "not subjective", like "of course people would fall asleep in a boring lecture" or something.
ことだ is like のだ, but implies the opposite of ものだ.
のだ is rather simple which is why it's used so commonly as an explanation of what the speaker is doing.
>>
>>149940840
>Now that's some nice advice, thank you Kim.
it's pretty correct though
hellotalk is a pretty big waste of time in terms of actual learning
just pay a tutor on italki to do basic conversation with you for an hour
>>
>>149940661
I don't agree that those are comparable examples. Both have pretty direct equivalents and don't have to be further explained. There are none for ものだ that don't obscure the actual fundamental meaning.
>Auxiliaries don't have the semantics that their non-auxiliary forms have.
To a degree they certainly do.
>>
>>149940990
Well, there is a spectrum of how much they retain their original meaning, but it's always very confusing no matter what you do. It might make sense to someone that studies linguistics or grammar to say "They're presenting the situation as a tangible object", because it's obvious to them that it's not supposed to be literal. But to a normal person it seems mindfucked. And it should. Speakers don't think anything like that at all. They glaze over it and, at best, have some of the connotations of the words used come out through the construction. That's it. There's no conscious or semantic "presentation" as given in the explanation at all.
>>
>>149940840
I forgot to mention something important - it wasn't until I was done with Core6k that I started to get this feeling of confidence. Somehow my vocabulary, even though it was "Core", didn't cover much around the 2~4k margin. But after Core6k it's become routine to figure out 80% of the words being used on a show. I consider learning the words 文法 and 語彙 landmarks for me (they are past 6k) because those had been words I wanted to know for a good while, on the rare occasions I tried producing at Lang8 and talked about my low Japanese skills.

Lang8, by the way, is pretty chill, you should try it. Start with a very formulaic presentation and you'll see it's no big deal being wrong and corrected. Human input is way smarter than you think (although it's always disappointed to know that really complex sentence you tried to stitch together is complete gibberish to a native).
I don't use it as often because I don't study grammar, but I've gone as far as to write an all-dialogue story full of autism and a jap dude understood most of it through context, only being confused about the gender of the MC because I used wrong pronouns.

>>149940915
Is italki an option for free users? I figure nips would be too afraid of the OHAYO ITADAKIMASU weebs and didn't even bother joining. Interpals is shit, gave up on it. If I was its founder, I'd probably have killed myself already out of creating such an unproductive social abomination.
>>
>>149941077
Yea, I agree with that. I do think it's a good idea to approach ものだ and similar constructions like that initially, though, and to let it diffuse into an abstraction through exposure. Otherwise there's going to be a wierd disconnect between ものだ used literally and used in this sense, as an auxiliary. Like take, ていく. I don't look at it when I read and think "Oh, is this いく meaning "to go" or いく used as an auxilliary?". I just imagine a basic abstract meaning and let context dictate the rest. Or that's how it seems anyway.
>>
We should make a place to upload our anki decks, I'm sure a lot of us have read some of the same stuff or plan to so it would save a lot of people a lot of time. I have some decks for ika musume and yotsubato myself. I just want a fucking ocarina of time anki deck
>>

>Downloading a pre-made deck defeats the purpose of learning vocab
Please explain to me how this is the case so I don't think you're just an elitist who thinks that you have to do everything by yourself for it to count.
>>
>>149941354
I think it's best to say "these are the elements in this construction" and then just lampshade the fact that it has a totally different meaning than if you tried to come up with what it means based solely on the parts. Like,

>(statement)ものだ
>from もの (thing) + だ (is).
>Emphasizes a situation as natural or unavoidable.
>Compare のだ
>Contrast ことだ
>Note そんなものだ, そうゆうものだ, <noun>なものだ, etc
>Examples follow.
>留学したいものだ。
>I would like to study abroad. [Want to study abroad ものだ]
>事故は避けられないものだ。
>Accidents happen. [Accidents cannot be avoided ものだ]
>>
>>149941590
Not him (and a user of Core), but yeah, mined decks are probably more efficient. It's just not worth the hassle if you have readily-available ones.

You idea for creating decks on single works is a little clunky because a LOT of words will overlap.
It would be better to create a single master-deck and tag a word with every work it appears in, so people can filter but also not have to do repeated cards should they start to read another title.

No idea how one would go about organizing that, though.
>>
>>149941590
Not him, but having used the deck of the yotsubato reading pack, I noticed that it's a waste of time cause I knew 90% of the words and it was faster looking up the fews I didn't while reading.

Also I personally hate anki and try to avoid using it too much.
>>
>>149941265
Interpals? You mean "oh hey you're cute, lets chat in English?"
>>
>>149941802
>>149941814
I get that, but in my opinion it seems less of a hassle to delete 500 words you already know from a deck rather than create a deck with 500 words in it. Maybe it's just me but I think you would still save time, of course if you know 90% of the words in the game anyway then you may as well just make your own.
>>
>>149941888
There is no saving time. If you have the proper set up it doesn't take any time to make cards. You read, hover and click. The only people who ask for premade decks are Anki drones who don't read.

First, I don't feel sorry for you about what I'm about to say.

You can't learn Japanese, and I'm being completely serious. You might know more than me right now, that's fine with me, you will not make much more progress. The reason is that you're afraid to make mistakes. You're such a disgusting elitist that you think that if someone makes a single mistake that others can see, they must be pathetic. Because of that, you will never attempt to type out anything in Japanese out of fear of messing something up. You don't understand that learning a language IS making mistakes. You will make mistakes, that is the reality of it. You will sound like a 5 year old trying to speak like an adult, that is the reality of it. You lack the maturity to accept this reality, I can tell simply because of the fact that you feel compelled to call a place I doubt you even go to shit. And finally, /v/ is not my homeboard, neither is /a/ or /vg/. In fact, /djt/ is pretty much the only place I lurk or post. I'm glad that we're speaking over the internet so I have the option to not think of you as an actual person, because if I were forced to realize you were a real person then I would probably cry for your pathetic existence, unable to just cooperate with people and have a nice time.

Simply because people coming to places like /a/ are generally depressed and frustrated persons, thus lashing out their frustration whenever possible, always trying to prove they're "better than you".

I don't like more "normalfag" places out there for sure and like it better here anyway but gotta be honest here, if you want a peaceful environment you better go elsewhere. Other solution is to be the aggressor yourself and happily bringing others down rather than being the victim yourself. That or be the sarcastic neutral pawn laughing at all the shit going on in here.

Yeah just disregard my translation I wasn't thinking. Kinda just emulated OP's translation with what I saw in the original.
I was just wondering how OP got 'didn't last that long' from the original sentence.
But then I got confused because not being able to wait 'even' if something goes on too long seems contradictory.
>>
>>149948736
yep its either a mistranslation from op or he typed in the wrong text? the way I see his translation makes sense if it was this - あんまり長くなかったけど待ちきれないと思うので

>>149948598
>>149948736
Great. I'm just a bystander trying to follow this conversation and now my mind is full of fuck.
I'm used to seeing あまり with negative verbs so the meaning as a whole becomes "not very"
I guess あまり can be used with positive verbs meaning very/too much/excess/etc?

Therefore あまり長くなっても待ちきれないと思う would be something like "if it goes on for very long, I don't think I'll be able to wait" like >>149948598 said. Right? That doesn't seem to make sense with the context that the original poster gave us.
>Context is teacher moving away after 1 month of teaching, saying he had a good experience and all, then :
>>
>>149948736
>>149948971
OP here. Mistranslation from my part. The text is correct though.

>まあ あまり長くなっても待ちきれないと思うので・・・
Then goes on saying,
>乾杯!
Since they were all holding their glasses waiting for him to finish his farewell speech (which was just one sentence long as far as I know).

Still sort of confused about the exact meaning to be fair.
>>
>>149949136
Seems like he's saying he wants to keep it short for them, the speech
>>
>>149949136

Yeah, so,

あまり長く なっても 待ちきれない

It just annoys me considering DOJG ddoesn't have any resembling example to that situation, considering here there is no "even / although" implied here, it's just a straight "if".

Put into more natural English:
>Well, I could probably go on for quite a while longer, but since it looks like all of you are out of patience already...
>Let's drink!
>>
>>149949817
There's a weird disconnect between the first and last part of the sentence though, that's what's so confusing. "Even if this becomes too lengthy I don't think you can wait any longer"? Makes no sense as is.

OP here, to be fair I'm kinda glad you're also bothered by it. I'm thankful for everyone's help and I do understand the meaning but I'm still bothered as to why it's ても here.

If that can help you, I'm reading sentence examples of あまり長くなっても over google to see if I can make it click.

This one seems to have a very similar context to the situation with the teacher I put earlier :

>「一言で答えるのは難しい質問です。かといって、あまり長くなっても印象は良くないし、話がまとまっていないと、上手く伝わりません。」
Here again, absolutely not trace of "even / although".
>>
>>149950128
oh ok sorry for the rudeness

but maybe you could look at it like theres an imaginary blank there after the も that is automatically filled or something cause you know context or w/e before the second part

that way maybe it seems less abrupt or something im not sure what your issue is with the linkage

Japanese is a very contextual language. The teacher is just leaving out the fact that he is the one that could make it lengthy because everyone already knows what he's talking about.
In that example, it does say "even if the answer is lengthy, it won't leave a good enough impression"
>>
>>149950423
I don't agree with this. In the same way this >>149950246 example isn't saying that the impression is bad no matter how long goes on for. This is more like two sentences being combined. I think I remember a discussion about のに that I think explains this as well. Let me see if I can find it.

あまり is a negative polarity item, therefore it must be in the same clause as a negation.

あまり[長くなっても印象]は良くないし

>>
>>149950246
I'm going to chime in here.
I don't see the difference in use of ~なっても here than in your other example.
I think one thing to consider is even though they're using なる which kind of signifies something "becoming" something without any input, there is indeed input because the speaker can choose how long their speech/answer will be.
So why don't you think about instead as
"Even if I made it quite long" or "Even if I wanted to go on for a while" or something along those lines. In both cases you get the negative contrast after it.
>>
>>149950673
>あまり is a negative polarity item, therefore it must be in the same clause as a negation.

>>
>>149949934
も at a fundamental level just acts as an incremental particle, it adds ideas to each other like "too" or "also" and it's often translated as "even though" when it appears in ても, since that's a contradictory conjunction ("but," "however," etc.).

When it's hypothetical like in your example, often just sticking in the phrase "even though" in a literal translation is confusing. It doesn't actually mean anything in English, so it's not helpful.
Instead think of it as "in the case that..." or "if..." but keep in mind that it keeps its incremental function.
Compare to:
話してもいい
風邪になっても行く

In the example here: >>149949817
what ても specifically got translated too, I think, is this bit:
>I could probably go on for quite a while longer, but...

Compare that to the translation of something like たら. It's still a hypothetical conjunction, but no longer contradictory. You would lose the "but."
>>
>>149950673
You're wrong.
>>
>>149950760
There are other places that negative polarity items can show up, but there's a negative right there. It would be super awkward if あまり weren't in the same clause as ない.

How about this:
>It's not much of an impression that even starts to become long / be lasting

If the writer of the given quote has academic literacy, it's a valid thing. At least in western languages you run into authors struggling to write the "it's not something that's even beginning to X" kind of sentiment in a compact way quite frequently.

In the case of what you wrote here
>あまり長くなっても印象は良くないし
the あまり is modifying 長くなる,
which would be equivalent to "becomes too long" in english. "Too" standing in for the あまり here.

I would translate that full sentence as "if it gets too long, the impression isn't good." Doesn't really make sense to translate that with zero context though, who knows what the "it" here is actually referring to?

It doesn't refer to the impression, though, because you don't call impressions long.

Also helped.
>>
>>149951369
you could use と or たら or any conditional really if you want to represent "if"
ても is contradictory so it's stressing the fact that a bad impression somehow contradicts the idea that "it" (the implied subject) might become long.
As in "it could become too long, but the impression wouldn't be good."

Not him but you're bastardizing anime and manga as if they were nothing more than DBZ or One Punch Man. That's backward and normalfag thinking.

Artists inspire themselves from life, and so Japanese artists inspire themselves from Japan itself. There are many great anime and manga out there which depicts life in Japan as well as its culture very well and accurately.

If you disagree to this you're either being a contrarian on purpose (sasuga 4chan) or have simply not read or watched many things in your life.

Create a text file with any plain text editor and save as html. Open that up in firefox and bam, you have a notepad with rikaisama access. Make whatever edits you need to the text file, save it then refresh the firefox page and it will update with the saved text file.
Use paragraphs tags or line break tags if necessary. Incredibly simple and lightweight.

Why does he have to make it so confusing...

>We learned in the lesson about formal grammar that 「ではない」 was the negative of 「である」. So how would we say something like 「であろう」 but for the negative? The answer is to use yet another type of volitional for negatives and i-adjectives used only in formal and literary contexts. You can think of this grammar as a very old-fashioned version for i-adjectives and negative 「い」 endings.

>The conjugation rule is simple: remove the last 「い」 and attach 「かろう」. You can use it for negatives and i-adjectives just like the 「かった」 past conjugation form.

He makes it sound like かろう is the negative volitional... but it's not right?
不味かろう would be something like "it's probably disgusting" right?
So what is the negative volitional? 不味なかろう can't be right, I don't get any hits on google with that.
>>
>>149964183
>Why does he have to make it so confusing.
Probably because it's getting to the advanced grammar that tae kim himself doesn't understand because he doesn't watch enough anime
>>
>>149964183
that's because the negative of 不味い is 不味くない
so neg volitional wouldbe 不味くなかろう
or (duh) 美味しかろう
>>
>>149964249
