入る actually has a lot of meanings and usages that go beyond what you'd be taught in a classroom or easily learn from an anki deck. For instance, if you were to ask a friend how many people were staying with him in a hotel room, this would probably be the most common verb to use.

I'd have to see the exact context to really give you good information, but it could be a specific situational expression that doesn't line up too well with english understanding of the verb. It could also mean something like, put the [belongings into our hands] and then put them away [into our posession]. Note how it's a te-form verb attached to another verb. I'd suspect the taking part mostly comes from usage of しまう rather than 入る. In this way, 入る could be completely detached from the meaning of "take their shit" and just mean to say that they have to go get it before taking it.

Do you have context you can provide instead of describe? Like, a timestamp from a show or an excerpt from the writing?

>Finally get past the Kana wall, now working on grammar and vocabulary.
>Figure I'll just play my imported DQ1 to practice reading and finding new words.
>Come across the following word(?)
>なかにすすみ
>According to Jisho it isn't a word or anything really
>Know it's the right kana because I double checked using a script I found of the game on gamefaqs.

Here's the full phrase from the NPC
「いらっしゃいませ。
  なかにすすみ つくえ ごしに
  はなしかけてくださいな。

So what the fuck is "Nakanisusumi"? Is jisho just shit? If so what's an alternative?

ください
>>

>>
>>149840312
"なかにすすみ" is actually composed of a lot of words.
菜= rape
カニ= crab
進み= progress
So, it roughly translates as "The rape crab's progress".

>>
>>149841388
Yes, it's a bad idea. No, it doesn't really matter.
>>
>>149841388
It's easy mode as you won't be mixing new cards with old. So you'll have a pile of x amount of cards you know are new which limits how well you need to know them to recall the meaning.

Beginner: New cards after reviews
Normal: New cards before reviews
Hard: Mix new cards with reviews.
>>
>>149841440

>>
If you wish to identify something and ask a question like 「そこになにが。。。」, would most japanese default to using ある or いる, for example not knowing if a cat or an object made a noise in the other room?
>>
>>149843575
why cant the noise itself be the question?
>>
>>149842533
Send the file to your desktop.
Divide the rows into tabbed spaces.
Each row represents a card and each column in that row lines up to represent a given field.
Import it into your deck and assign the fields accordingly upon the import screen.
>>
>>149841607
>Well fuck that I don't want easy mode.
Why?
>What's the point of learning Japanese if you don't struggle through every single part of it?
What's the point of banging your head against the wall if you can open it by turning a handle instead?
>>
>>149843626

Of course you could formulate differently and bypass the whole issue, but my question pertains to verb prioritization if one must employ the sentence structure in my example.
>>
>>149843756
ok then lets assume that most inanimate objects arent the cause of a lot of noise
if you are so intent on forming a question like
*noise*
'what kind of [living or non living] object created that noise???'
>>
>>149843938

You seem to avoid the question rather than answering it. An object falling from a countertop could be a cat's fault or simply happenstance from it teetering on the brink.

Now if I want to ask the question in my example, non-verbally implying that I'm asking if it was an object on its own or if it was the cat's doing, which one would the average japanese person default to?
>>
>>149843716
What a terrible analogy.
>>
>>149844223
i dont know, ask imouto
but that sounds like two questions now
>>
>>149843680
the problem is, there are more than 800 words
isn't there a script or something?
>>
>>149844223
If your hypothetical japanese person thought that a living object made a noise, and wanted to express concern over the fact:
なにかいる?
If your hypothetical japanese person thought that a non-living object made a noise, he would not say そこなにがある? and he probably wouldn't even say そこになにかある? because neither of those sentiments make any sense. You can set aside the japanese and consider whether our average human being would even think to ask the question "What is over there?" in response to a noise.
A hypothetical average japanese person would just say something along the lines of その音なに? and be on with it.

Your scenario is pointless. If you want to know more about ある vs いる then ask about that, don't get pointlessly hypothetical about language. It's something that only exists in practice.
If we boil your question down to "is ある or いる preferred when you have positively no clue who or what the subject is" then the answer is neither. You'd say something that doesn't involve ある or いる, because in that case you don't have a reason to use either of them to begin with.

I'm not the person you're responding to, but I've read both 四畳半神話大系 and 有頂天家族. His voice as a writer in both is excellent and highly enjoyable, it seems like he'd be the type to not really have bad works. Though be warned, he's not afraid to use difficult vocabulary and complex sentence structure, so I wouldn't really start out with him unless you're trying really really hard to learn something.

I actually lost 10kg in 3 months by doing 1h of treadmill everyday. 10kg was the difference between fat and normal for me, mostly because my 手足 don't get any fat so it was 10kg of man-boobs and flacid belly. Which are back by the way.

Anyway, exercise isn't pointless, unless you are a fag who thinks doing it 2 times a week is something to be proud of. His analogy is fair enough.

you can eat that hour of treadmill a day back in a few snacks
it works because people feel worse for overeating and exercising at the same time. Your 10kg loss was the result of a lack of energy intake, not a barely increased daily output.

Assuming anki is your main method of study:
10: You'll learn Japanese at the pace of classes, but without the writing/speaking/listening practice
20: Normal. You want to start reading moege-tier stuff within the year
30: Fast
50+: You should probably be spending more time outside of anki
50+ and spending more time outside of anki: People will not believe you when you tell them how long you have been learning

What does being close to 2017 have to do with anything?

>you'd be surprised how many words you can pick up without touching anki
Yeah but you can pick up significantly more just by doing a little anki every day.

>you'd also be surprised to learn how easy it is to use a dictionary in the present day and age
But not having to use a dictionary is probably easier
>>
>>149851430
>within the year
Doesn't mean you have to wait till the end of the year. Also, by moege level stuff I meant more average stuff rather than hanahira and yotsuba

>I never even touched anki in terms of vocab and I've read 3 LN volumes this year
I hope you don't think that's a lot.

>there's no way you need a year of grinding fucking core to be able to read hanahira
Well 20 a day is not exactly a lot of time studying.

it doesn't even happen with books written in english
besides do you really think not encountering new words while reading is a good thing?
don't fool yourself with the notion that anki is teaching you words. you learn words through context, all anki does is help you remember them

>>149851688

I'm not fooled desu. I have example sentences for context. Even if you don't think that's enough, when I do encounter the words in their native text I will be able to pick them up extremely quickly.
At the end of the day the person who had been doing anki will be much further in terms of vocabulary than someone who hadn't been.

example sentences aren't context
context is what you can thank when you know what a word is without looking at the kanji long enough to register anything but the physically largest radical

also somehow I can't shake the feeling that a good 90% of the words I actually look up are missing from core
at this point it's probably not worth it for me to go back to anki unless it's for mining
I'm not going to build up the willpower for that anytime soon, though

Before you can really know a word, you have to go first through the phase of just recognizing it as a word, knowing it's approximate meaning, and learning its reading. These things do not really require context, and this is what anki is extremely efficient for. It is just important that you realize what you are going for. Don't use anki with the intention of groking the soul of the word, just realize you're spamming words so that you are acquainted with them and can actually acquire them more easily through reading

>also somehow I can't shake the feeling that a good 90% of the words I actually look up are missing from core
Core 10k covers quite a bit, not that I would recommend actually doing the whole thing. Of course you'll have to learn the lexicon of whatever medium you're reading, especially slang type stuff, but the first 4k or so words of Core should give close to 90% coverage

How much time is too much time with anki.
Usually I have a little less than ~200 reviews while only 10 new cards a day. It feels like way too much review time for such a low number of cards.

Which gets me to this point :

>>149841527
My configuration is 'Mix new cards with reviews'. I'm not into the whole beginner normal hard, but does this really matter in the grand scheme of things ? aka do you learn as well doing new cards after reviews than mixing them.

>I'm not into the whole beginner normal hard, but does this really matter in the grand scheme of things ?
It really shouldn't matter.

>Usually I have a little less than ~200 reviews while only 10 new cards a day. It feels like way too much review time for such a low number of cards.
It is too many, sounds like you have low retention. Either you need to do a bit of kanji study (just paying more attention to the kanji when doing your vocab cards may be sufficient) or you're doing absolutely nothing but anki.

If it's that bad honestly just give up on anki for a bit, and try doing pure reading. Or just drop core and do pure mining for a bit. Anki clearly isn't being efficient for you so I think you're better off just reading until you're more used to the language.

Using Hiragana alone for the first fortnight, maybe if you're really pushed for time the first month, of studying the language is acceptable. After that you need to start drilling kanji.

I know they mean the light gets put into the space in the gate but I typically read から as 'from'. I guess it really isn't ambiguous because you can't '差し込む' out of something but could you use に anyways? What if it were a sort of verb that could imply either direction, would you then use から for 'from' and に for 'to' or would there be some ambiguity?

Hello, fellow turtle, I take 1 hour to do my daily 200 or so reps.

All in all, steady wins the race - whether it's slow or fast. But not everyone can go fast, so just enjoy the ride.

When it comes to Japanese, both are important, so don't sweat it.

Failed cards don't disappear into the ether, you know; you'll still have to eventually pass them if you want to finish your daily reviews (assuming you've disabled the cap, as you should). After years of studying Japanese and passing N2 I lucked out and got myself an IT job in Japan. Three years later, not only have I not made any further progress, but I seem to have lost all interest in the language itself.

I think there are multiple causes for this:

>I understand Japanese enough to get by in daily life: from casual conversation to understanding written material enough to apply for a bank account or look for a house (for example) without having to ask for help

>Career progression does not exist and workers are seen as expendable commodity. Companies here give zero shits about one's actual skills or doing things properly (I work in IT, software developed here is 5-10 years behind abroad). It's all about ass-licking and the name of the university you graduated from.

>The above seems more pronounced the more traditional a company is and the more it requires Japanese knowledge. Feels like improving my level would make me employable by even shittier companies than my current one.

>Mangas are more conveniently obtainable in English (online scanlations) than in Japanese (physical book or having to deal with godawful Japanese apps). Similar situation for anime

>A lot of the difficulty in higher level Japanese seems made up: people writing paragraphs to say things when a sentence could do; an endless number of words having the same meaning (translation in dictionary is the same) but can't use them interchangeably.

I fully realize I am ranting here, but I'd still be interested in asking someone who went through a similar experience how they got over it.

1)Keep doing what you're doing and drink yourself numb until you stop thinking
2)Kill yourself
3)Find another job
Realistically speaking your only chance of attaining any sort of happiness and remaining in Japan is 3), but then you'd have to go through annoying paperwork AND hope that a)your new job is less shitty than your current one (somewhat unlikely) and b)that your new job does not pay significantly less than your current one (and it WILL pay less, that's absolutely 100% certain).

Working in Japan is no better or worse than any other place. Problem is that the sort of people who complain about it managed to get the opportunity travel and work their in the first place, which the vast majority aren't privileged enough to, so of course coming from their relatively cushy life any real work to survive will be seen as horrible.

While I don't go looking for it myself, laughing at people who are monumental fuck-ups is a reasonable motivation approach.

Motivation falls into 3 major camps. People who are motivated by seeing others fail, those who are motivated by being told they'll fail and proving said person wrong, and motivation from wanting to experience something, be it manga, a VN, or a fucking 80s TV show.
>>
>>149859174

Question for anki users: how do you study? It's dawning on me that 've never used flash cards as a basis for studying, so I'm not really sure if I'm using them correctly.

I go through 20 new, 80 review each day. If I get a word on the first appearance, I hit good, if i get the meaning in English only, I hit hard up till it hits 7 days after I've seen it before. If I mess up entirely or haven't learned the kanji fully by one week, I usually just hit again.

I'm also doing radicals at the same time, but I've been slacking a bit in that department. Is it better to crush radicals out of the way and then focus on actual kanji or no?

If you need to ask, you're probably doing it on a whim without long-term planning.

I give you one week, then several months of avoiding the language and being eaten by guilt, then a fresh, less motivated rerestart at normal pace.

Would never have gotten that if I didn't start learning Nihongo.

The only thing difficult about that is the font size.

I genuinely did not think I would have to delete more than a couple thousand words from core10k for it to start showing me vocab I hadn't seen before

time to go back to individual kanji study

According to professional subbers who lurk DJT, that could be easily adapted into English.

How would you read this upon first glance?

Are you already preconditioned to reading it as ユニクロ / Uniqlo?
>>
>>149873109
You're supposed to find where the English definitions intersect and use them to figure out the single Japanese definition.
>>
>>149873333
It's such a common brand name I'd be shocked if anyone doesn't recognise it as that.

急にガタンって大きく飛行機が揺れたんです。

The 大きく modifies 飛行機 right? There's no way it's modifying the shaking or the ガタン in this sentence, right? I'm confused because I don't get why the person would be saying the 飛行機 was big here considering the person was already inside when the thing they described happened. It's just silly and doesn't make much sense to me.
>>
Today I did Anki for 28 minutes and then I read a visual novel for 3 hours and 8 minutes.
>>
>>149873535
It would have to be 大きい in order to modify 飛行機. 大きく is modifying 揺れた.

>急にガタンって大きく、飛行機が揺れたんです。
>>
>>149873597
>It would have to be 大きい in order to modify 飛行機.
Ahh yeah that part also bugged me. I see.

Thanks for clarifying!
>>
I'm getting used to Anki, I can see how it's a really effective program. It's only been 2 days and while I'm not remembering everything there's some stuff that's sticking.
What's the optimal way to use the Again, Good, Hard and Easy buttons? I tend to use 'good' when I feel I can get something with a bit more progress, Again for stumpers I trip over and Easy for obvious stuff like 一. I figure going with my gut is the way to work but if I'm shooting myself in the foot I'd like to know.

When you don't recognize the card before flipping it: "Again"
When you recognize the card but don't remember what's on the back: "Again"
When you have multiple ideas what's on the back before you flip it, and one is right, but you "pick" a wrong idea: "Hard"
When you get the back right: "Good"
When you have an eidetic memory of the card and don't even need to translate it: "Easy"

If I can't get the answer within, I'm not sure exactly how much time but let's say 2.5 seconds, I hit hard. If I can't get the answer right away but hard would pass the card to another day I hit again until I know it and then I hit hard.

I only hit easy if it is my first time that day seeing the card and I instantly 100% know it AND there hasn't been another super closely related card to jog my memory.
