I agree, I'm becoming convinced that the same people who say that FliFla is too confusing or doesn't make sense are those who would rush to their keyboards to post about how Miyazaki is a hypocrite whenever they see a thread about The Wind Rises. Characters must be clearly defined and themes can not vacillate.
There's nothing wrong with enjoying a show for characters, I do too, but it's sad to see a show like Flip Flappers cast aside for the thing it does uniquely well, visual story telling.

Another factor is that I'm not sure how many people actually watch anime intently, rather than having it on whist being distracted by other things. I don't see how it was possible to not understand what was happening in the Iroha episode if you payed attention, but there were confused posts all the same.

I don't know about anyone else, but I feel like our sleuthing for episode 6 left a little to be desired. There was definitely more going on this episode with respect to the visuals and subtle connections and allusions to past episodes than we explored in detail and I think that we ought to take a moment on the eve of episode 7 to revisit 6 and give it a bit of more indepth investigation.

Nothing artsy fartsy that maintains high-quality animation will ever be forgotten.

Its production values alone will make it a classic because it wasn't just one pretty scene every couple of episodes, or an awesome sequence in a single episode, it's been consistently exceptional all the way through. If it sticks the landing, it will go down as one of the "must see" shows for lovers of sakuga and unique visual style.

Don't see it. All the traits we've seen from her point to the complete opposite of this, and a sudden personality switch merely from having a "realization" wouldn't make sense.

Regarding the "is it DEEP or not" discussion, I think a lot of that image of the show came from the first two episodes that had a lot of possibly meaningful imagery scattered across and teased certain things some of which we still know nothing about (like the dead girl or the
brain). The rest of the episodes kinda abandoned some of that to in turn tell their stories.


Note that 1-2 were the only episodes storyboarded by Oshiyama himself. He's coming back for 7 and will probably do more (at the very least the finale), so I wouldn't be surprised if the show changes its tone/mode a little bit from now on, even aside from the writer deal.

We're not using the actual term 'deep' here, that's a buzzword. DEEP ironically has a more concrete connotation of a work trying to make some seemingly important/grand statement about society, the individual or the human condition in general. Saying media is good because of DEPTH is just a retarded way of demonstrating how much smarter you are than everyone else, and how much more authentic your enjoyment of the thing is than theirs.

At the end of the day, subtlety in story telling is only desirable for what it does. It can be used to say a lot and still leave some interpretations open to the viewer, but it doesn't inherently add anything if used clumsily. By the same token, you can tell a perfectly meaningful and touching story in a straightforward way without having to use cliched narrative devices.

For FliFla's part, it's using the tropes just to hint that there's more to the story than they're currently telling us. It's not necessarily DEEP or insightful or meaningful. It doesn't have to be. It will have done its job even if it's just a superficial flourish they added for effect.

I doubt it'll be anything like this, but I'm fairly sure Papika's past won't be nice, and probably really tragic.
