>X is a deconstruction of Y
What the fuck does this even mean and why is it an argument against/for a show?
>>
>>149809602
It's like calling something "self-aware", even if it's aware of the cliche's and faults it's doing, it doesn't matter because it's still doing them making it a moot point.
>>
the meme use of the term is whenever something does anything even remotely original in a generally stale genre
>>
>>149809602
It's supposed to mean an analysis of various tropes and applying them to a more grounded, realistic setting. However, people tend to abuse the term quite a bit.
>>
"Hey what if we made an X genre show but took all the common traits of X genre and tried to make them more realistic?"

It doesn't matter to the overall quality of the show and anyone using it as an argument for or against is wrong.
>>
>>149809669
Blame tvtropes and pretentious internet critics trying to sound smart applying the term to any grimdark take on a particular genre
>>
It's a deconstruction of actual persuasive arguments.
>>
>>149809790
>Pokémon Black & White deconstructs the idea that everyone would be okay with Pokémon battles.
>Naruto is a deconstruction of the power of friendship because Naruto only solves his problems through real strength.
>Konosuba is a deconstruction of harem shows because the harem members actually do things on their own.
>Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V deconstructs everyone siding with the main character instantly because everyone disagrees with Yuya at first.

TVTropes should be awesome, but instead it is the worst site of all time where no one actually understands any of the things they're writing about.
>>
>>149810094
they actually wrote that shit??
>>
>>149810146
Paraphrased, but yes. It should be noted that three of those are laughably untrue and the other one is based on a false premise in-story.
>>
>>149809602
It's a very fine line to tread and most fail
>>
>>149809602
Why is Squidward so scared of Asuka?
>>
It's used when you want to defend a shit anime in a played out genre, but can't think of any real praise for it.
>>
>>149810094
People who write there try to be witty first and foremost, is my impression. That begins with the names of all these tropes.
>>
>>149810463
It also has a problem of fanboys of a show trying to have their favorite show to sound as smart as possible and to have as many of the "good" tropes as possible and that's why they came up with 9ther shitty buzzwords like "subversion", "aversion" and "reconstruction" (yes that's an actual fucking thing over there)
>>
>>149810639
>reconstruction
Just reading the definition, and then the examples given in anime and manga, I get a headache.

> Kill la Kill, made by practically the exact same people who made Gurren Lagann, serves as an enormous counter-argument to shows like Puella Magi Madoka Magica, which do nothing but Deconstruct the entire Magical Girl genre to such a point that people begin wondering why they even liked the original shows in the first place. Not only is it a Reconstruction of the incredible power of hope, friendship, family, love, acceptance, and the very idea of Order Versus Chaos with Ryuko's rivalry against Satsuki (and later their combined rivalry against Ragyo), but it is also a Reconstruction of the very idea of Fanservice itself. It takes the ridiculously skimpy outfits most Magical Girls wear and gives a justified reason for it: The less a Kamui comes in contact with its wearer's skin, the less likely it is to overwhelm them, thereby feeding the wearer its power instead of vice-versa, the way all other Life Fibers do. Not stopping there, the show also Reconstructs the absolute sense of feeling shame by watching something that has nudity in it. As Satsuki explains in episode three, nudity is nothing to be ashamed of as long it serves a purpose, and that to feel embarrassment from it proves nothing but a lack of conviction, which the entire rest of the show goes out of its way to justify.
Haha, holy shit my fucking sides
>>
It's a word as meaningful as a description like "mecha", "mahou shoujo", etc. It just describes what the show was trying to do, it has no bearing on quality whatsoever. Deconstruction simply means taking stereotypical elements of a certain genre and treating them without regard for the genres tendencies. For example, say you have mahou shoujo which typically revolves around girls fighting monsters. Remove the fact that they are basically immortal and the monsters get defeated every time, and treat them as standard, plot-armorless human beings, and what you will get is that the characters die. This is not edgy, it is simply what happens when you apply logic to the in-universe laws of a series like that, without bringing in the extra-universal laws like things that directors and writers decide about the series. That may be a rough explanation, but you should get the idea. Also you already made this thread and I told you to fuck off so fuck off

>All those mental gymnastics to try and justify some ass and titties on-screen to make them look """deeper"""

Sometimes a pair of ass and titties is just a pair of ass and titties. It's okay to look at them. I promise.

>What the fuck does this even mean

It means that X tries to do what Y does, without taking Y's genre conventions for granted, and instead, exploring those conventions from an outside perspective.

Like, the Incredibles is a superhero movie. Superhero movies tend to be set in a world that looks like ours, but with superheroes. The Incredibles does some deconstruction of the superhero movie genre by having the superheroes forced out of buisiness due to litigation following lawsuits for damages. Or how their tailor doesn't want to give them capes because they get stuck in things, etc.

>and why is it an argument against/for a show?
It shouldn't be. At best, it can be pretty cool and interesting. Usually it's droll. like for one, deconstruction only works when most of the work in a genre isn't already deconstructions. Dogpiling on some corny shit nobody's made unironically in 20 years isn't creative.

What is Kafka to Dostoievski? Think in that OP.
>>
>>149811770
Yeah, I never got why some KLK fans try so hard to pretend that it's totally different from the other ecchi series. Imaishi never pretended that it was anything more than that and there's nothing wrong with it. It's like some of them are ashamed for liking it.
>>
>>149811806
Pretentious hacks with no doujins of their works so not worth readung
>>
>>149811814
It has a strong female protagonist, som tumblrinas had to come up with some rationalization for liking it and not being sexist and shit, mso they pretend it's this deep and intellectual deconstruction of the fanservice genre
>>
There's a distinction to be made between deconstruction of a single trope and deconstruction of a genre. The former case can be appropriate when addressing and building upon consequences of a convention which are usually ignored.

The latter case, in reality, doesn't really happen. In a loose sense, a genre can be described as a set of defining tropes, but not all of these can be deconstructed. Saying that a show itself is a deconstruction is meaningless. At most, you get more logical consequences of certain aspects involving the premise of the genre being explored, but no show truly goes out of its way to defy every single convention in its genre.

Even Evangelion, heralded as the most prominent anime example of deconstruction, does very little to deconstruct its genre. At most, you have Shinji getting his ass kicked in his first fight. But beyond that, a lot of the mecha-related conventions are played straight. It's more of the psychological exposition and meta commentary that make it noteworthy, and that has nothing to do with deconstruction of the mecha genre.
>>
if it's too deep 4 you it's a deconstruction
>>
>>149812006
Him being a retarded smartass aside he made a point in that video, many shows often use shitty 4th wall breaking as a get-out-of-jail card when using shitty cliches

>Kill la Kill is a deconstruction of the high school and shounen genres
>>
A deconstruction of something would be an academic essay. I'm not sure how this started getting applied to media.
>>
>>149809669
I guess you could say that people DECONSTRUCT this term.
>>
>>149812354
It's a convenient term that is sadly overused and misused most of the time
>>
>>149809669
No it's not you fucking pseudointellectual idiot. Look up who coined the phrase and what it actually means. It's not a synonym for "subversion of clichés that's actually still shit but appeals to pretentious teenagers."
