The anime BD scene has largely been dead for a while, it's just been masked by a small handful of franchises or concepts with ultra devoted fanbases like Love Live, Type-Moon, Gundam, Monogatari or Fujoshi/Yuri flavor of the season anime. When even big A-1 hype projects like Gate with huge pre-installed fanbases struggled maybe it's a sign that people are just losing interest in buying overpriced anime.
Like not even just outlier fans but core fan types in general just seem to be tapping out of late as the Japanese economy struggles leaving only some fetishist and idol fags to pick up the slack. Perhaps this is where the fujoshi audience is coming in to dominate things now as it is still buying somewhat well compared to a lot of the other subcultures. They have a chance to take over from the male otaku who used to buy more than them.
