Nobunaga is a genuine example of "dying as a hero". He did many good and bad things, but just when he was about to take power he was killed by a traitor in his ranks. No matter how hard future generations tried to demonize him, he still ended up popular just because he was never in a position to enact policy.

I agree and that's a shame since he was pretty cool and a fine middle ground between Nobunaga and Ieyasu. Love how once Hideyoshi came to power he banned the social mobility policies Nobunaga had introduced and that allowed him to go from dirty paesant to top dog of the era.
