The episodic nature of the show makes it easy to play around with, and the characters remain consistent, so once I realized the stories were basically unrelated (after they died a bunch of times) it didn't bother me.

Well first of all you can't call Madoka's presentation "bland", even if you don't like it.

Secondly, Ikusei Keikaku is literally written like a page-turner; the reason to watch the show is just to know what happens next (read: who backstabs whom). Madoka, while also relying on plot twists, is much more about themes and mood.

The characters are so predictable and boring that it becomes annoying waiting for them to stop flirting and for something to happen. If they weren't holding back the show so hard, it could have been great.

If it keeps going around in circles like it has for the last couple of episodes and never really goes anywhere until the last couple of episodes then just rushes in an ending then it'll be garbage.

Makes me kind of wish someone would make a long-running manga for Flip Flappers, which could take it slow and introduce more characters and settings. Not him, but it's true though. Flip Flappers' director is a complete newbie. This is his first show, and he is suddenly given an original project. Of course, the episodes are jarring. It's like they skipped 2-3 episodes along the way. The show is pretty and fun, but ultimately aimless and without form.

Compare it to Hibike. It's a great adaptation from a well-known assemble of staff. The direction and art composition is simply superb, suiting the 'realistic feel of the highschool drama.

Of course, nobody in this thread is gonna admit it. Otherwise, you'll lose your high pedestal and noone will circlejerk here anymore, heh.

The way I see it, the transformation items behave similarly to lightning rods. The girls are capable of 'getting struck' by power so to speak and then transforming even without an item. Having an item concentrates that energy. Like you said though, it's psychological so they can't just use any item. It has to be something they treasure.
