It's hardly a "recent" retcon but KnK and Tsukihime can't exist in the same universe for several reasons.

Melty Blood makes it explicit by summoning Ryougi from an alternate timeline to the universe the game takes place in.

As for Fate, the series spans multiple universes anyways. Not so sure on Nasu's current stance as to whether FSN and Tsukihime share a universe or not.

There's this guy on BL who seems to be working on one. The only page he translated seemed to have mistakes in it but he's good at editing, I'm not sure how far along he is now if he's even continued.

The connection the manga creates comes from the fact that Chaldea has a replica of Atlas' TRI-HERMES computer(the one that calculates the future). Then in one parallel world where Sialim is the head of Atlas(the Extra worldline) she manages to drag Sion's(From MB worldline) into simulations that predict the future, to try and find solutions to the problem. In one of these simulations/(worldline travelling) she ends up in Chaldea right before the event of FGO.

It actually connects the worlds of MB(by extension Tsukihime), Extra(through Sialim and Rani) and FGO. All of this is done though projecting yourself in other "dimensions/worlds" thing though. One of the last thing that happens in the manga is Sialim telling Rani she'll be going to the moon because as we know they won't manage to prevent the destruction fo the world and so they decide they'll find a way to deal with the aftermath.

Isn't it still ridiculously popular considering that the only "real" piece of media exposure it has was the 15 year old VN and yet it still gets brought up?

I get the feeling you aren't being serious with this question, but I would say the biggest point in it's favor is how every route ties into the other ones in a meta way. There's lots of little moments in one route that are interesting twists on events from a previous route, and having things that just seem like random innocuous things come back with some crazy expliation in another route is real effective writing for a VN in this style.

Also it, for a lack of a better word, is real good at letting you self insert into shikis situation, with the reveals and fucked up shit being shocking to the reader as well as to him.
