Is it recommended to download a Anki grammar deck after finishing Tae Kim, and if so, which one should I download?
>>
>>149342819
No, it's recommended that you go read native material.
>>
>>149342819
It's more recommended to start reading

But if you really want a grammar deck then DoJG, although anki really isn't supposed to be used for grammar, you can't just grind grammar like you can with vocab and kanji
>>
>>149342819
Personally I liked the DOJG deck, but you should stick with the beginner cards until you get a lot of practice reading, and then do the intermediate cards, and after awhile start doing the advanced ones once you are really comfortable with reading and have a sizeable vocab under your belt.

When I did that deck, I was completely lost in all the nuance and similar words once I hit advanced.

How far can one get without using katakana words in Japanese?

I always use stuff like 扉 instead of ドア on purpose, but sometimes it seems unavoidable, like using プレイ for a game. And ゲーム, of course.Makes me want to pull a Chinese mindset and write something like 電遊. Sometimes it's even understood.

Unless you're reading something somewhat advanced I don't see what's your excuse for not aiming 100%; it's just a matter of googling, using rikai, TK/DOJG and your head. And before you jump the gun on me, he clearly said

Actually, the mental effort to consciously avoid loanwords is a great exercise to improve word recalling speed (something I always hear people complaining about when they can't converse in English in real time), and it doesn't take too much effort to get back to loanwords after I'm used to the kanji ones, since they are mostly Engrish.

In reality I make a much similar exercise with English sometimes, where I attempt to utilize secondary vocables and investigate how distant my cerebral thesaurus attains.
>>
>>149346822
>Actually, the mental effort to consciously avoid loanwords is a great exercise to improve word recalling speed (something I always hear people complaining about when they can't converse in English in real time)
That's pretty dumb and stupid because word recall doesn't mean shit if you recall the wrong word.

It's hard enough to speak naturally don't try to learn to speak unnaturally.

Loanwords are still words. You gotta learn when the loanword is more common and when it isn't.

The case of a game is a bit different in my opinion, since games were conceived in a way which balances dialogues and gameplay in a certain way, so reading in Japanese and thus slower gets more frustrating than it should be, to us.

If those NPCs would've been speaking English you'd have read what they said. At least I hope, can't say people nowadays have much attention span anymore when it comes to RPGs and such.

>>149346786
True. Just a few posts above some probably beginners attacking someone for RTK and recommending KD instead (simply because KD is quicker). Typical DJT faggots. I'm glad I started browsing DJT when I already had studied the fundamentals, while I think DJT is really a great place, it's also a pretty toxic one for gullible beginners with no self-discipline.
>>
>>149346634
You didn't understand 100% of it, you just thought you did. You're not going to get 100% comprehend of native material for a long time yet.
>>
>>149347035
You're most likely right, and I think it speaks true for everyone in this thread.

Still, making the actual effort to grind 100% understanding is still a much better approach than ignore anything remotely difficult while reading, because doing so is exactly what would make you progress the most and what will make reading feel rewarding in the long run.

not later than yesterday people were talking about skipping bits of what they'd read in their vn
>>
>>149347019
>If those NPCs would've been speaking English you'd have read what they said
Depends on the game. Sometimes they provide lore and information about the world, sometimes whatever they say is just meaningless and every NPC is the same soulless clone.

Dragon Quest does that really well. I read everything there, even in Japanese.
>>
>>149347217
What people mean is that they skip stuff if they've looked it up and still don't feel comfortable with. There's nothing wrong with that. Some things take time to develop a feeling for.
>>
>>149347217
I did it plenty and it worked out fine.
What's important is that you don't ignore the N+1 and N+2 stuff. If you always try to understand that stuff you'll keep improving quickly. But it's completely fine to skip the occasional N+10 line. If your first VN has some line in classical Japanese it would be dumb to quit reading and go try to understand it at that point.

A while ago some guy posted some line like 右手に(some flower name)、左手に(some flower name). I answered him, but this is something that is very hard to look up what is going on. But if you just read a couple more VNs you'll see 両手に花 and the next time you see some slightly obscured reference it will be obvious.

Autism is a spectrum, most here are at least mildly into Asperger's.

Aspergers is considered the mildest, least severe form of autism. That doesn't mean it "is mild/minor autism". Aspergers is diagonal to autism as a whole.

People with aspergers have to have nonfunctioning, poorly functioning, or underconnected mirror neuron systems. That's the medical definition of psychopathy. Someone with aspergers needs to have psychopathic symptoms because of an autism spectrum disorder in specific.

People are usually not diagnosed with aspergers unless this symptom overshadows all the others, and it's not a significant intellectual impairment alone, which is why it's considered a mild form of autism. Emphasis on the indefinite article.

Please I beg you /djt/ explain radicals to me.

First and foremost what should I use to learn them and how do I do that?

I have different radical anki decks, one has like 200 radicals and the wanikani one has around 400.
I know wanikani has made up radicals, does learning these make sense?

Also what do I need to learn, do I only have to recognize them or do I need the meaning?

What I read so far is

The original chinese characters were pictograms and combinations of pictograms. Eventually they stopped having a strictly graphical meaning because that was fucking retarded. Also words kept changing meaning and they had to make multiple hanzi for what used to be a single word, and differentiated them by adding extra random components.

Radicals are components that are used to sort characters in dictionaries.

>I know wanikani has made up radicals, does learning these make sense?
No.

It's technically easier and you should learn them if you want to but it's not a big deal.

Because you are both autistic.

Anyway, your current argument has nothing to do with the basic forms に違う と違いない since they are pretty clear cut.

But on the other hand it's pretty dangerous to say that something is *never* correct, and not particularly useful either. It's far more important to know what IS correct.

I don't have to tell you that "i was go store" is incorrect because you would never think to say it to begin with, because you know the correct version.

>I don't have to tell you that "i was go store" is incorrect because you would never think to say it to begin with, because you know the correct version.
That's a good point. The book is aimed at Japanese university students, obviously they know what's correct, the book is there to stop them from making mistakes by stretching it too far. I still find it a worthwhile read. For example the section about usages of に and から and their overlap. And again, it's as you say, it warns about mistakes I don't feel I'd make, because I'd stick to the clearcut safe usages に and から.

How many kanji is "enough"? Has anyone here reached the point where they come across new kanji as seldom as they encounter new words in their native language? So far I've learned 2200 kanji (Jouyou plus extremely common stuff like 嘘 and 嬉), and I still feel completely lost. I'm well aware that's far less than what most native speakers know, but I thought that after learning the Jouyou kanji I would at least be able to read with the same fluency as a 12 year old, and that is clearly not the case.

Assuming your definition of "instantly" is "repeated exposure over months", i can do it easily too.

Takes maybe 2700 before new kanji get pretty rare even in harder material. After 3k it slows down like crazy
>>
>>149368656
I honestly stopped bothering with a kanji focus after 2000.

I fucking hate stupid shit like clothes kanji and farming related kanji and refuse to bother with it unless it has a cool phrase or jukugo that is common enough to justify memorizing it.

That was it, thanks. While having the leech function sounds good in practice, I think once you practice a different way and get a word consistent, you should put it back in your deck. Just wish it were a bit simpler to do so.

you just haven't awakened your bankai yet
>>
>>149373025
That's because your deck is limited in words.

When you come across a word in the wild it could be any of 50,000 words. Whereas when you see it in your deck it's only part of maybe ~5,000 so it's easier to recall. You know you've seen this word before, you know it is only part of a limited set. You might also recognise the hiragana part of the word, which could be changed when you read it in the wild.

tl;dr - Anki is easy mode.

It's probably too early to be worrying about not recognising stuff during reading then.

Not recognising it, looking it up, feeling stupid and continuing on is all part of the learning process.
