Stop analyzing it as if it was a on and off switch.

Depression, like most other things, works more like a continuous spectrum in which absolute values do not exist, only unlimited intermediary values.

That being said, whether he has reason to be depressed or not is completely relative to the other infinite positions that can exist within that spectrum.

Since the spectrum is infinite to both directions - negative and positive, depressed and not depressed - there is an infinite amount of reasons and people that are more depressing than he and his.

The same could be said about everyone else.

However, this also implies there will always be an infinite amount of people happier than you.

Incorrect.
Try and think from this perspective, from a moment: all numbers are intermediary values between negative and positive infinity, which by themselves are undetermined values.
Patterns within the chart of a function that can be observed are an evidence to this argument.
The fact that within two integers there is also an infinite amount of other numbers is also an argument for this point of view.

You have entered my area of expertise, friend.
What you say may make sense, but that does not apply to surreal numbers, let alone to hyper surreal numbers.
How is that for you?
Google won't help you with that one.
Mathematics is a precise and exact science, not some goofy ass branch of philosophy.
>>
Crying females are one thing, but dealing with a crying male is a whole different can of worms, at least with females there's plenty of ways to get them to stop, for a male it's either a punch to incite anger or giving him even worse news so he stops crying faster from lack of tears.

But humans aren't variable to an infinite scale. We are programmed from the start of our life and affected and changed over time with quantifiable and categorizable variables, and though it is continuously growing, human population is not infinite.
If we categorize in culture or time period, and as long as its on specific aspect of humans, things like depression is definitely quantifiable and can be put on a scale.

>>148962227
For surreal numbers, let us take, for example, |w(f)|. An imaginary surreal can be written as |w(f)|+Hr, whereas Hr is an hyper real. It could be, for example, 2i. Another imaginary surreal would be |w(f)|+1i.

In this case, between surreal numbers |w(f)|+2i and |w(f)|+3i, there is an infinite amount of hyper real numbers. You may try and write |w(f)|+2.9...i, however, that will never be |w(f)|+3i.

The same explanation applies to lower groups.

And if, as you say, mathematics was such a precise and exact science, Mathematicians would have already figured out how to solve the Monty Hall Problem.

Let me end this with a question. If philosophy is such an imprecise and filthy form of knowledge because it came out from the ignorant minds of humans, then what does that say about the supposedly purest form of knowledge, which was discovered by the same ignorant brains?

>His relatives are asshats who were going to throw him into an orphanage/foster program and forget about him because all they cared about was the shitty hospital grandpa ran and wanted to inherit it. Grandpa himself only cared about dead dad and ignores that he existed.
>Agree to go with dad's shogi playing friend as a student/rival for his own kids to escape having to join the foster program despite not actually liking shogi much.
>His very presence in the family starts tearing it apart because it makes them see their own flaws and everyone but fost dad comes to resent him.
>Picked on at school and ends up with no friends as a result.
>Basically entirely alone without even family.
>Foster sister possibly raped him based on your interpretation.
>Moved out as soon as he went pro so that he could get away from the foster family, but now has to deal with all the stress of living on your own as well as keeping up with school and studying/practicing shogi enough to not drop in rank.

Yeah, he has no reason to be depressed at all.

>>
>>148962081

Neither do I.

That's never going to change, but how I live my life and how I view and react to my situation is something I have the power to change.

There's an innumerable number of reasons and excuses one can use to justify and reinforce a negative outlook. None of them will improve your life or make things better.
>>
>>148967784
It doesn't matter for this scenario if you do or don't have parents, did you lose them when you were a little kid and started working to pay your bills when you were 15?

DON'T JUDGE HOW I FEEL I'M ALLOWED TO BE BABY FED : The thread
>>
>>148967617

I have an incredible amount of ambition, that's the reason why I didn't just die or give up and use/sell drugs. I have sine semblence of a career now, even though I have no qualifications or credentials or experience I proved my worth by working 7 day weeks 12-14 hours a day for years.

Realizing ambitions when you have nothing is accepting that it won't happen overnight and that it will only happen if you're willing to put in the work required no matter how uncomfortable and hard it may be or become.

If you've read the manga then its blatantly obvious he suffers from depression early on in the series and gets better as the series progresses thanks to support from the people around him.

I lost them at 16 and became a ward of the state, I've been alone ever since. My mom was a severe alcoholic and both my mom and dad beat me. My dad liked to grab my by the neck and then throw me into my room. The beating started at 6 years old and got progressively worse. I got beat, usually by groups of 5 or more, in school for being the only white kid.

My parents died in a drunk driving accident.

>>148967745

I don't have to imagine being a teenager again, I lived it.

I would have rather had a sister who hated me than nothing at all.

All of this is over anyway, it's been 9 years. This is the first time I've even said anything about it, maybe it would have been better not to.

Depression is something a lot harder to pin down than just being sad and eats away at you really slowly, not matter how successful/shit you are at life.

Yeah, why would a teenaged orphan who lives on his own with little social interaction and works a high-stress job ever have personal issues?
>>
>>148969515

He should try to get his life in order instead of crying how his life is not in order.

But we all know it's easier to cry than to do any work.
>>
>>148969231

/a/ understands depression, but not how SHAFT is portraying this character. He's not really suffering from depression though, it's not equivalent to being sad, which is how he's portrayed in the manga and why people are shitting on him for being that way. Having support from friends doesn't cure depression, yet that's what improved things for him. If it was a chemical imbalance and something he couldn't fix himself, people would be more sympathetic.
>>
>>148969100
I'm gonna print this post, sell it as modern art, buy it and frame it on my wall to pick me up every morning.
>>
>>148969673
The series is literally about him getting his life in order. That's the story.
>>
>>148968942
>Excessive amounts of sleeping
>Regular and reoccurring feelings of helplessness and worthlessness
>Persistent fatigue
>Preoccupation with death or similar dark thoughts
>Lack of interest in hobbies and entertainment activities
>Prolonged and frequent periods of sadness
>Appetite loss

Seems pretty depressed to me.
>>
>>148969673

That's pretty much my issue with it, I usually empathize with characters similar to this, but he just irritates me instead. It's probably just studio issue than a character issue though, but I haven't read the manga.
>>
>>148969367

You should be a psychiatrist. See what the success rate of that prescription is for people with actual Major Depressive Disorder.
>>
>>148969951
Not everyone can be so broad-minded and strong willed like myself, I'm not expecting it to be a silver bullet.
>>
>>148969837
>>Lack of interest in hobbies and entertainment activities
That's just how he is, even when he's happier he's autistic that way.
And a depressed person wouldn't have the drive and dedication necessary to stay a professional player, and certainly not the desire to go back to school in addition to that.
>>
>>148970018

So you've been diagnosed with a depressive disorder or are you just confusing sad and depressed line the other anons said?
>>
>>148970114

Exactly this.
>>
>>148970114
He starts taking a bit of interest in the stuff the science club does later. And relationships.

Overall though I'd argue that he's been obsessing over shogi for so long and nothing else that he just doesn't think much about doing anything else with his free time once he starts getting happier.

That and the kind of drive and motivation people can have under depression can vary. His studying shogi was less drive to be better and more obsessive escape for him and then he became dependent on it for income once he moved out and ended up stuck with it. He was approaching the point of giving up even that at one point too.
>>
>>148970455
My only medical diagnosis is: "Qualified for fieldwork and prone to faking illness"
