Overall though I'd argue that he's been obsessing over shogi for so long and nothing else that he just doesn't think much about doing anything else with his free time once he starts getting happier.

That and the kind of drive and motivation people can have under depression can vary. His studying shogi was less drive to be better and more obsessive escape for him and then he became dependent on it for income once he moved out and ended up stuck with it. He was approaching the point of giving up even that at one point too.
