He comes across as annoying, and whether he's justified in is personality or not is up to the author/director to convey, who is/are clearly not doing a great job.

Why should I care about his shitty life? All this series is really doing is throwing a sad kid in front of me and saying "FEEL SORRY FOR HIM!" I'm not saying the situation is necessarily unrealistic, I'm just saying that, if this story is so worth telling, which clearly you think it is, then it's being executed pretty poorly. My case in point: I've only been complaining about MC because he gets the most screentime. The happy girl family is boring too. This is practically an animated soap opera.
