That's all you need to be succesful. Just put some loser MC in an alternate world probably related to video games in some way, add a bunch of waifu flavours and top it off with some edge and you're done. It basically writes itself, all you have to do then is write in the little details and dialogue to accompany it.

SAO had consistently better animation in S1, it's characters were all boring but atleast they weren't offensively badly made like Subaru or Wilfheim, the stories were equally boring but SAO managed to have 1 arc that deserves a 5/10, better then Re:Zero.

You're actually supposed to dislike him or at least think he's annoying and there aren't any NHK moments when you realize you're just as bad, Subaru is supposed to be worse. The viewer is constantly given his reaction to events and although he's lacking a backstory he becomes impossible to self insert into, he's not just slow but his flaws are overly apparent.

The viewer is shown what he's missing before he realizes generally know more than he does and he constantly makes the decisions the viewer wouldn't.
