Well, we'd have to work out how popular Rem and Re:Zero were before Arc 3, because I get the feeling he'd already decided his plans for Rem by the time he started writing Arc 3. Showing the existence of powers that could erase people was obviously going to pay off in a character being erased, and a character people actually cared about. He starts out as his usual chill self, but seems to be completely thrown off when he realizes Rem isn't Ram and that both Oni are alive. The odd thing is that he actually met Ram around the same time the first episode was happening, and knew her name without being told. Other than that, he was acting like his usual silly self.

Since he clearly doesn't have any problem with Ram, that all points to Rem's existence being what he takes offense to.

However, that conversation was undone with the timeline, so Al probably doesn't know Rem is still alive in the current loop. Which means this plotline will probably be furthered when he gets the chance to meet her again.

I'd say both of them have Envy as the underlying basis of their personality, when you think about it. Their admiration for certain others is probably inseparable from their jealousy. I actually think Rem is the more direct example we have of someone living a life defined by their Envy, even if parts of it were in trying to reject that Sin. It's something still clear in the Natsuki Rem story where she has her hair styled like Emilia's. Envy has actually led her through quite a lot of Sins, starting with Pride, when she tried to find her own separate worth, to Sloth, when she gave up on doing anything, and she later moved to Wrath, much of that likely directed towards himself, before proceeding on to Lust.

Subaru had very big parent issues. His parents weren't bad at all; in fact Subaru thought they were too good for him and had tried to get them to scold or abandon him but they just kept supporting him...much to his dismay.
What's sad is that if he didn't isekai, his dad would have straightened him out and he would have finished his education, attract a woman with a personality similar to Rem and get a job.

On a side note time is progressing normally in Japan. His parents are devastated on his disappearance, with his mother in depression and his father trying to keep spirits up back home. Subaru needs to go back and alert them about whats going on.

changed at all, the prospects of the EATEN girl returning still as yet unrealised.
But if he regardless left her sleeping here without doing anything, even this vessel would be lost.
Subaru: “You might not feel this way, but it's thanks to you that my resolve hardens.”

It seems to be generally agreed that the characterization is better, and it has a lot of interesting scenes that the anime left out. You wouldn't even know that Al's been set up to be kind of a big deal, because the anime cut all of the scenes which established his mystery.

The Witch of Envy loves Subaru deeply. Not as much as Rem though, but it's definitely a monstrous amount. She probably granted it to him, or granted him an authority of sorts (some speculate this authority to be Pride and some new rumors are spreading about another authority other than the deadly sins (there are 2 authorities outside the deadly sins like Vainglory and Acedia) called Tristitia (sadness/sorrow). As for why she gave Subaru RbD, we don't know.
The light novel and web novel are superior to the anime. Though light novel is better, the web novel is longer and covers up to arc 6 while light novel is just starting arc 4.
