Is Soul Eater any good? The character designs look neat. It's

It's really good, but it has a dumb ending. Manga stretches the story a bit further, and is better in my opinion, but at the cost of an EVEN DUMBER ending.

Worth the watch either way.

It's got that abstract quirky feel to it that I just love. I have nothing but good things to say about it.
Still, at it's core it is shounenshit.
Think generic shounen with a veneer of quirky edgyness but not in a bad way. Though if the character designs weren't as good as they are this show would almost not be worth it.

Overall I'd say it's very near almost as good as HxH. And at 50 EPs it's as long as it needs to be.

It's very unique and has good style. Note that the anime goes completely original around the halfway point.
Sadly, both suffer from a weaker second half and a piss poor ending, but I still think both are worth watching.

I don't know about the manga, but I'm pretty certain they never started that plot device in the anime. Sure she never shows up except in spirit towards the end there, but it was never like some sorta mystery in the anime. It was just a thing. And I mean, since I never met the character I don't know if she would have been an important addition, but there are plenty of assumed characters in shows you never meet that don't subtract from them

Oh yeah, and the second half is pretty shittttttttt. Character motivations, logic, reasoning, character development, and just the general air it had just goes out the fucking window. It sucks, but first half is good.

I don't even mind that they never defeat the Kishin. It makes sense enough story-wise, but everything else about it feels so lackluster, even though there weren't really all that many plot threads to begin with. It feels so empty.

Soul Eater is relatively unusual for a shonen manga in that it has a female lead and handles three protagonists more or less evenly. It would be best described as "quirky" – quirky art, quirky characters, quirky sense of humor.

Ranged from very good to average up to the Arachne arc, after which it stagnated. Maka was a decent, likable and underdeveloped heroine whose main appeal was her design, while Soul's background and inferiority complex to his elder brother was interesting and led to several fair power-ups. Black Star started as a cut-price Naruto clone and ended as a bland, overpowered protagonist supported by the kind and nurturing Tsubaki, with a worthy arch-rival who had one of the most unique fighting styles to date. Kid was Kid. His gun bitches (forgot their names) were mostly comedic relief.

Comedy, world building, and fights were all decent until Arachne's defeat, after which the story became very half-hearted and the author clearly had no idea how to proceed. Most of the remaining villains were nerfed in the final fight, the supporting cast (Stein, the dads, etc) were never utilized effectively past Baba Yaga, and Crona was literally left on the moon with the madman. The series should have ended when Maka made Soul a Death Scythe as promised.

Superbly animated by Bones (NOT! aside) with the original art style perfectly captured. Maka's VA became a meme. Then it went anime original and ended on the lamest, most unsatisfying note until the manga's ending surpassed it in both respects. Excellent OPs and EDs, with a capable VA cast and admirable direction until it caught up to the manga.

It's pretty solid earlier on, it kind of drops off later on and the anime has a terrible ending, the manga ending isn't that much better either.

Best experience is to watch the anime all the way through. Pick up the Manga from the Arachne arc onward and read through until the end.

Because honestly I liked how the Manga continued the story. It's worth seeing Maka's Black Dress for a somehow worse than anime-original ending.

Then, if anyone ever tries to tell you about "Not!" just do the entire world a favor and shoot them in the face. If you're ever contemplating suicide, go ahead and watch it because it's 100% guaranteed to drive you over the edge.

Pretty good but the ending was shit, afterwards I decided to read the Manga and it's ending was somehow worse.

The spin off was ok but not as good.

I finished rereading the manga yesterday, and it was even better than I remembered. What's your problem with the ending? It's a fantastic shonen if you ask me.

While the manga death seems a bit rushed and overwrite a bit over the fact that Medusa would want to see the chaotic world she helped make, it still stays consistent with her experiment projects.

Anime has her making the worst deal ever with Shinigami that doesn't mean anything and only rely on his words. It's stupid as fuck for a villain like Medusa who spend most of her time lying and thus wouldn't trust anyone's word.
Then she sits on her ass until someone kill her instead of being an active villain like she has been for the 3/4 of the series.

It had some good ideas thrown in but Ohkubo clearly didn't know what to do with them and just wrote the first things he could think of to get it over with, covered in a bit of fanservice to make up for it (insane-Kid out of nowhere, Excalibur out of nowhere, genderbending)

Her relationship with Stein, while I'd have been interested to get more, I'm not sure where it could have gone.
It's a bit of a will they, won't they, with Stein being tempted by the madness and having either to choose to stay sane (like he has been for the whole manga) or to pick insanity but it seemed less and less likely the longer it kept going and it would have been a bit pointless to have them interact for the result to always be the same...
Now if he had ended up becoming totally insane, that could have lead to an interesting bad end for him, with his former allies chasing and eventually killing him. Though he could also be turned back to sanity, as long as it's done well.

It's a pretty interesting series, but I admit that I never finished it. Once we saw all the top characters and the stage is set for the final showdown, I just sorta' felt like the adventure was over. The series has very little pull in its story, things just kinda' progress in random directions, so seeing the ending doesn't really interest me.

The amount of content per page is similar to Bleach, so if that bothers you, you'll feel it here, too. Of course, if you watch the anime, you don't have to worry about that.

Magic in the series is pretty loose. Some people like their magic bullshit to have some structure and it's almost non-existent in here. There's some worldbuilding and general running themes, but for the most part characters just pull shit out of their ass.

The series focuses on 4-7 characters primarily. You may think Maka is the main protagonist, but don't expect some epic story or something about her. She just barely edges out the other characters in importance.

It's funny. In terms of battle shounen, I'd say only One Piece and possibly that One Piece rip-off are funnier.

It suffers a bit from killing off new characters too quickly, which is sort of why I find it aimless. Villains get dispatched with very little build-up. You don't get a chance to ever really appreciate them as characters. Secondary villains surprisingly live longer than primary ones do.

Lastly, my favorite thing about the series is actually the fight choreography. I know that sounds weird, like who ever talks about that? Obviously characters will do shit like fire a plot bomb in someone's face and one-shot them, but most of the action is creative and nuanced. For example, one guy has a chainsaw's chain around his body and he fights by breakdancing, causing the chain to rip into people. Honestly, I don't think any other series except maybe A:TLA are as inspirational in its action scenes.

And Soul Eater Not is like a slice of life fanservice with a mostly new cast. Eh.

Probably mad because it's revealed that the antagonist is literally unkillable and the sealing is just a temporary setback. It kind of sets up another showdown in the future which they might or might not actually lose, but we will never see it.

Personally I didn't mind it. I think it's a nice change compared to the usual shenanigans. And the title of the story refers to Asura after all, not Maka's partner.

But apart from that nothing really happens. Kid takes over Shibusen but he seems way too young for that shit. Everything goes on like almost nothing happened, and there's really not many subplots wrapped up because they never existed. It's really a kind of "the adventure goes on" ending, which I've never found satisfying, but this one feels particularly lackluster.

I think the ending makes you realize that there really wasn't much to the story aside from Asura. The setting has immense potential, but world-building is practically non-existent.
The kids became friends without much rhyme or reason, pretty much every character gets at most 1 panel of backstory every 40 chapters or so and nothing in the entire story feels even remotely fleshed out.
Characters seem to come and go unnaturally simply because Ohkubo feels like it's time for them to do so.

Once you start to reminisce about the entire story you start to realize how empty it really is.

Sure, the worldbuilding is the manga weakest point since is nearly non existant but it was like that since day one. I mean, those are valid critics but they apply to the whole manga, not just the ending. Ashura being unkillable was a given since even Shinigami had to seal him, and I'd rather have him stay that way than see him getting killed by some bullshit friendship magic. I rate SL way above average if we're talking about battle shounen, but that's mainly because its strongest point was the likeable cast with screentime for everyone and that's what I look for in shounen. I also waifu Medusa.
