There was more effort put into this one than others just ordering it off Amazon, and $300 isn't a huge jump.

So yes, it's worth more than $150 because of the con ticket, and the extra effort to get a signature.

I guarantee the Jap studios give them the high quality raws, so I don't see why the purposely downgrade the quality.

It's both the BD compression quality and the entire rental culture of Japan that contributes to the high cost.

The average US consumer won't buy a set of BDs for 300 dollars, so US publishers compress it as much as they can to fit on less disks. Japanese BDs tend to be like 1-2 episodes per disk, US ones are several per disc. US ones also tend to try and trim any fat off in terms of extra features with, say, the company that published Jojo using a basic windows filmmaker or whatever dvd menu format in lieu of something more professional.

There's also some possibility that Japanese publishers are purposefully asking US publishers to decrease the quality in their releases to try and prevent reverse importing.

Notably, the Italians are even better than the Japanese for BD quality, so if you REALLY wanted the best quality possible, you'd go for their shit.

There isn't really a lot of comprehensive information on all this since most people simply don't care to look into it. There are some bubbles of discontent about it though, like here:

Like I said, aniplex seems to have the same quality but that's because they have a japanese studio too I think, so they are directly connected with business in Japan.
But the US studios like funimation and especially sentai filmworks are spending money to put out a lower quality product, it's not like the discs themselves cost enough to warrant that.
