K-On shows the feeling of how years can pass and it feels like days. The feeling of time passing and the changing of seasons is something that slice of life anime, and in particular K-On, nailed perfectly.

You have to make every day the best you can because before you know it you're gonna have to move on with your life.

I haven't watched it - but here's why I imagine:

It's a show about life and it's struggles. A lot of people grow up watching stories where you could only aspire to be as cool as the MC. Explosions, good with girls, money, power, that kinda thing. Sometimes, it's humbling to watch a show "just about life." People with insecurities, daily struggles, characters you can relate with the day-to-day struggle of. It's comforting for some people, entertaining for others. Seinfeld as >>147218243 kind of hints at it - although it's done in a different way. "It's funny because it's relatable" shit. I admit I cringe at that kind of philosophy a lot, but Seinfeld did it ok.

But then you have the weebfags who just make it about cute girls doing cute things, but they are social outcasts so you should ignore them.

Fuck

>>147223153
Why I say so:
>better animation
>less "shiny" palette
>better musics
>S1: 2 year worth of story told in 13 episodes
>S2: 1 year worth of story told in 26 episodes
>Mio is still an introverted lovable gf material
>Ritsu got boyfriend-baited in S1
>Mugi's airheadness in S1 is actually comedic and not asinine as in S2
>beach episode that is actually cute
>christmas episode that is actually entertaining
>drama during the finale

now I wanna hear yours
>>
>>147224058
S2 has:
>better animation
>better visual direction
>better sound design
>less sleazy jokes
>better songs
>superior narrative structure, not just a comedy
>makes more use of character dynamics like that Mugi episode
>expanding world
>poetic imagery
>melancholic atmosphere
>a unifying aesthetic with Yamada's full creative control
>incredibly tear-jerking finale
>>
>>147224435
Not that anon but what sleazy jokes did season 1 have besides Mio's pantsu?
>>
>>147224768
All I was wondering is if you thought there were any other sleazy jokes in season 1 besides Mio's pantsu.

I don't have a dog in this fight, anon. I love both seasons and the movie equally.
>>
>>147224435
>better animation
>better visual direction
S2's "visual direction" is too ambitious that it's sad. Animation was blocky and the color palette was too shiny. Albeit also blocky, S1's minimalist color palette works well with it.

>better sound design
S2's OST isn't as easy-going as S1. Trying to make the soundtrack sounds mature didn't work well with light theme of the show.

>less sleazy jokes
Ey, Mio's pantyshot was legendary.

>better songs
Without context, Fuwa-fuwa time > Pure-pure heart and Fudepen Ballpoint > U&I.
Tenshi isn't canon and it doesn't sound good without knowing what happened in the episode it was inserted on.
Cagayake! Girls > Go!Go! Maniac > Utauyo! Miracle
No! THANK you > Don't Say Lazy > Listen!!

>superior narrative structure, not just a comedy
It is just wrong to expect actual story in SoL anime.

>makes more use of character dynamics like that Mugi episode
I admit this is good point.

>expanding world
S1's non canon live house > S2's non canon London live
There is a moment in one's artistic journey in where their essence can only be captured prior to certain point, and S1E13 was its peak.

>poetic imagery
>melancholic atmosphere
>a unifying aesthetic with Yamada's full creative control
Exactly why I don't like S2; because they are just warming up and truly went wild on Hyouka.

>incredibly tear-jerking finale
Forced. Only worked because it stretched 1 year timespan into 24 episodes that makes you attached to it for being in the ride for too long.

Let me educate you on the scholarly worth of K-On!!
>Yamada's direction is reminiscent of French New Wave auteurs like pre-68 Godard and Truffaut as well as other directors like Sofia Coppola and Yasujiro Ozu. These influences along with her fancy to amateur photography inform her work but she still displays a fundamental understanding of what makes animation animation
>K-On!!'s incredible production is a symbol of the changing gender roles in the anime industry as more and more female animators and directors are becoming pronounced (Rie Matsumoto, Sayo Yamamoto, Miyo Sato, Choi) Kyoto Animation has a firm narrative on 2nd wave feminism.
>K-On is a microcosm of modern Japan's desires for a Utopian world where the simple pleasures and nuances of daily life can be appreciated, where simple interaction and genuine camaraderie can be felt.
>K-On is ideologically rooted in the New Sincerity literary movement
>K-On's character acting is influenced by the full American animation system
>It is the apotheosis of a genre unique to its field
>>
>>147225383
Wasn't really even a panty shot, they were never shown on screen in the anime which I thought was very tasteful.
>>
>>147225543
Agreed. That is as far as lewd K-ON! can be and it was memorable for doing so. Innocent and pure CGDCT.
>>
>>147225383
The first season is just a worse Azumanga clone and straightforward adaptation of the manga. Only the last episode is anything like the 2nd season tonally. The underlying narrative and gradual melancholy of S2 was perfect. Plus Azusa's role as the audience surrogate. Pure Pure Heart and Tenshi ni Fureta are the best Houkago Tea Time songs. K-On!! is the pure distillation of Yamada's sensibilities with genuine heart and sincerity to it. Music festival and London were beyond anything in S1 in terms of authenticity, how it perfectly captures the feeling of really being there. How could you say the finale is forced when it's done so gracefully and foreshadowed throughout the entire season? The coming extinction of that Utopia and learning to appreciate the passing days and time together were what made K-On meaningful. K-On's direction was nothing like Hyouka either.
>>
The only thing I didn't like about Season 2 is how the extra episodes and the OVA happen before the last main episode. This really confused me when I watched the movie and thought they went on their trip after they graduated.

Maybe I am just a retard though and everyone else understood that clearly.

This comment will be 2 parted since it's too long.

>The first season is just a worse Azumanga clone and straightforward adaptation of the manga.
Yes, it is. And remembering the source material isn't any more of that should be taken with as least grain of salt as possible when adapting it. S1 was faithful the the source material and was entertaining for that reason. There are reasons why S1 launched new age of moe and it wasn't story, but rather simple cute girls doing cute things with nice finale as a ribbon to wrap it up.

>Only the last episode is anything like the 2nd season tonally.
Which is why I don't like S2. Because S2 tried too hard to recapture the same overwhelming feeling when S1 ends.

>The underlying narrative and gradual melancholy of S2 was perfect.
Like I said, it was because S2 was too dragged and too padded that you as its audience get too attached to its elongated running time.

>Plus Azusa's role as the audience surrogate.
It has to end somehow and it didn't want to end like Azumanga.

>Pure Pure Heart and Tenshi ni Fureta are the best Houkago Tea Time songs.
No, they are not. Great insert songs HAS to be capable of capturing the spirit of the show without having to watch the show itself. PPH and U&I felt FLAT for the entire song, PPH doesn't have the light and fluffy feeling that FFT has and U&I cannot be enjoyed at all for being too tied in with the episode it was sung on.
Heck, I have yet to watch Macross Delta but I can say for sure Giri-giri Ai is enjoyable without having to watch the show up to the episode it was inserted on.

>K-On!! is the pure distillation of Yamada's sensibilities with genuine heart and sincerity to it.
I will not comment on this.

Again, no it's not. The set up was beyond the S2 finale and it's there because S1 dictates the girls goal is to be on Budoukan.

>How could you say the finale is forced when it's done so gracefully and foreshadowed throughout the entire season? The coming extinction of that Utopia and learning to appreciate the passing days and time together were what made K-On meaningful.
Because again, you got too attached to it. What you call foreshadowing is just inevitability. What you call grace is the bond the show made with you being fed back to you.

>>147225975
If you really want to know why I can say it like this, try not to watch K-ON! for 2 years and marathon the whole thing in less than 5 days, you will feel it. I too got attached when having to wait 7 days for every episodes for 6 months and felt empty when it was over, but rewatching the whole thing without having to wait for weekly episodes doesn't give the same feeling.

>K-On's direction was nothing like Hyouka either.
K-ON!! S2 was their testing ground before working on Hyouka.

Does anyone else remember a copypasta about K-ON and On-Live? The premise was something about Mio getting raped by another character who was telling her about how On-Live was the future of gaming, I can't find it on the archives anymore and I'm starting to feel like it might not have actually existed in the first place.

Oh fuck I found it
Tsumugi noticed Mio's open mouth, incapable of speaking. "Don't worry Mio," she said, slipping her cock into a quivering Mio. "You're scared now, but you'll enjoy it."

"No," Mio hissed back. "I'll never forgive you for this."

"Oh but you will." Tsumugi whispered. "For you see, OnLive is launching the world’s highest performance Games On Demand service, instantly delivering the latest high-end titles over home broadband Internet to the TV and entry-level PCs and Macs.

Founded by noted technology entrepreneur Steve Perlman (WebTV, QuickTime) and incubated within the Rearden media and technology incubator, OnLive spent seven years in stealth development before officially unveiling in March 2009.

OnLive, together with its Mova subsidiary, lies directly at the nexus of several key trends, all of which are reshaping the way we think about and use digital media:

* The shift to cloud computing, displacing the limitations, cost and complexity of local computing;
* An explosion of consumer broadband connectivity, bringing fast bandwidth to the home;
* Unprecedented innovation, creativity and expansion within the video game market.

Pioneering the delivery of rich interactive media to the home, OnLive will change the way that entertainment applications are created, delivered and consumed.

OnLive, the future of videogames."

I appreciate K-On for its sincere coming of age elements, its more character driven approach and Yamada's stylistic hand and attention to the little details that elevate the whole. S1 shares the kind of Ishihara voyeurism/visuals, skeeziness, otaku-ish humour and empty 4koma structure I can't get behind. S2 feels like a real down-to-earth slice of life with more confident direction, slower pace, more character-driven moments and the kind of structure that makes it better not to binge watch. Yui's "This is our Budoukan!" is a lot more grounded and meaningful since it's based on the characters' friendship and closeness to their school. Also the show establishes Azusa as the audience surrogate since the very beginning as you will part with the group through her eyes. That outsider dynamic is key to the show making the graduation anything but forced.

I have to go now but I simply can't get behind the idea of s1 > s2 as I felt the latter displays a much more mature and grounded approach to the story as well as superior craftsmanship and personal meaning.
