He's a mixed bag. Its playing off that same sort of angel densetsu type story with the MC with a mean look all the time, but isn't actually mean. Yet due to the situation, he ended up crossdressing. Since he liked a girl, she hates men, so an easy answer is becoming a girl and trying to worm your way in with her so you can eventually fuck her. If she's a lesbian, then the easy answer is becoming a girl.

Overall theme of the story seems to have to do with lies, and how they fuck you up.

They have fans, it has a following, either like it or don't rather than saying its wrong.
