Even then, there were characters in Hellsing who could stand up to Alucard like Anderson with the Nail, and even characters who weren't that far behind like the Captain, Walter and true vampire Seras.
I mean, Alucard had to be tricked into being defeated in the end, but Anderson could have killed him in direct combat before that. Characters like Arcueid and Kiss-Shot had to be nerfed at the beginning of their stories just to stop them from destroying everything, because nothing else could actually stand up to them. The oldest case I'm finding for vampire weakness to silver is North American folklore, and even then I'm not sure if that has any real correspondance to European vampires. And although apparently some cases of European folklore included it, I don't know any actual examples. Like I said, all the most prominent tales from folklore and vampire fiction from the 18th and 19th centuries didn't seem to have it at all, for whatever reason.
Everything else seems to be from modern literature, and without much explanation for it.
