>>146814078
I had to google this. I do it in English and I'm fairly certain I read more, and quicker, than the average person. Is there really anything wrong with this? Isn't the alternative simply skimming?

I've had Japanese friends say they don't actually read kanji in a sentence, they just get the meaning and move on (which is why they can encounter unknown kanji and assume the meaning). I feel like this is a fundamental difference between the two languages that makes a lot of us 出来ない.
>>
>>146814078
Do most people not actually read what they read?
>>
>>146814177
>Is there really anything wrong with this? Isn't the alternative simply skimming?
It hinders your reading speed, but that's not really a problem unless you feel that you read too slowly.
>>

>>146814266
I feel like the people who argue against subvocalizing typically aren't reading for the quality of the work, but care rather for the quantity.

Limiting subvocalizing seems useful for tests/exams or reports/instructions, but I can't imagine using this method for anything with literary qualities.

Just finished 坊ちゃん. It was easier than I expected, partially thanks to the 10 or so pages of annotations that were extremely helpful.

I wonder what I should read next. Maybe something written more straightforward like an LN or manga.

This is only because you don't read enough.
Any sufficiently read native should have no problem properly appreciating the text without taking the time to read it aloud, even if it's internally.
>>
>>146815725
I read plenty and subvocalize.
I can't read without it, every time I try I hate it.

I don't think I follow, what exactly did you mean by this?
>>
>>146815725
That was me you replied to. I guarantee you I read quite enough.

Subvocalizing is fine. I can't imagine reading certain works without it, because it would completely strip the work of any assonance, rhythm or many other rhetorical devices. Like I said, skimming is only useful for works you don't care to put any emotional involvement into - it's the equivalent of /a/'s suggestion to just watch anime at 2x speed to get through series quicker. It's silly.

Unless subvocalization is referring to the actual act of mouthing words, in which case yeah, that's ESL behavior. Though I do think it's a necessary part of the language acquisition process for plenty of people.

At least in my experience, most works aren't written like Shakespeare, with rhyme or iambic pentameter or the like. I'll agree that for stories where the very text is poetry, you should be subvocalizing, but I don't think this is true for the majority.

Furthermore, I don't agree that it's only useful for works you don't care to put any emotional involvement into, as a story can be just as moving and powerful without the need for poetic devices, and for those, it's a superior experience to not subvocalize. Skimming is different as it implies not fully appreciating the words and taking in only the general gist, whereas you can read a page with full appreciation at a speed far greater than a person talks.

If you're just learning reading and nothing else, it's not necessary. You can learn that from books and media.

If you want to learn Japanese with any sort of competency and relevancy (conversation, listening, speaking, native tendencies, etc.), you'll need experience speaking with native people. My Japanese level exploded at enormous rates after I started speaking to my friends on LINE and after getting married to a Japanese citizen.

The best choice is obviously just moving to or visiting Japan, but I'm assuming you don't want to do that.

As for online sites, I imagine that most of them are like dating websites where they're 90% weirdos and scams.

Steam is a good place, actually. Half of my friend list is Japanese people. Play a multiplayer game on a JP server, then add some people from your game and try talking to them.

I feel like it's still necessary for humor, and just dialogue in general.
Imagining stuff that's written in the book is the fun part of reading, no? Intentionally muting the characters in your head to go faster doesn't sound like a good time to me.
>>
>>146817930
No, but a week of tourism will let you meet Japanese people and get some contacts. That's what I meant.

Check out TF2Japan and other Steam groups like that. Just pick some active people, add them, and try to talk to them. If they blow you off, just try somebody else. Just be honest and tell them that you're serious about studying Japanese and want a sort of pen pal thing.
>>
lets be real if someone added you out of nowhere and said they wanted to learn english youd just laugh and tell them to eat shit

Maybe if you're an asshole?

And even if some stupid asshole on Steam told me to eat shit for that, I'd just forget about that person and try somebody else.

Just don't try to talk to teenagers, seriously, you'll instantly hate it.
>>
>>146818131
I don't agree that you need to subvocalize dialogue to imagine it. Maybe you put on a little voice in your mind for each character and picture them saying each line in that voice, but I personally am happy with reading it, imagining the scene and conversation without conjuring an image of each individual syllable.

It's just a matter of personal taste though, and in Japanese I still mostly subvocalize because my reading isn't quite fast enough to outpace my thoughts yet.
>>
>>146818386
some people think subvocalization means "reading in your head" which it doesn't

subvocalization is actually a physical thing

the only people that subvocalize are functional illiterates and people with disorders of primal empathy
>>
>>146818225
If someone at least kinda interesting wanted to learn some English off of me I'd probably be a bit excited.

The key to fan-translating is to not get caught up in these little things, just pick one and go with it, as long as it isn't egregiously bad English grammar no one will care.

If you're doing serious translation work, it becomes important to pick what flows best, and requires actual writing talent in the language you're translating to.

>>146819489
Most of them are from this year, since I've been doing like 20 a day. There are about 4000 cards in that deck and it gets a good 400 a day in it, plus another 200 from old decks. Is it really such an unusual number?

It just seems inevitable that the reviews eventually pile up this high, unless I take the rest of the year to stop adding new cards and get it all down again, I guess. I have tried reducing card counts but the end result over time seems to only be around 100 less, so it's not exactly a great improvement.
>>
>>146819632
20 new cards a day = about 150-300~ reviews

if you get much higher than that then you're probably getting an extreme amount of cards wrong
>>
>>146819632
Granted, my vocab is half as big (4000 from core and 1000 from mining), but still, I usually get 200 reviews on core and 100 on my mining deck with 20 new cards on both. I don't see how you could possibly get 600 reviews unless your retention is unusually low.
>>
I don't understand how SRS works. I thought I did, I added X new cards a day, and my reviews remained roughly constant after a couple of weeks.

But I stopped adding words to my core deck, and instead started doing exactly the same amount of new words in a second deck.

But for some reason, my reviews are about 1.5x what they used to be, after leaving it a couple of weeks to settle down.

Here is the main problem deck. My other decks are around 75%-80% retention. You can see there's about 200 a day, but that's before reviews, so you add the reds from the previous day plus new cards and it ends up close to 400 every day.

If this is a deck that you made yourself, you could look into fleshing out your cards: for example, add sample sentences if you're not doing that already, or pictures for certain words. Otherwise, just temporarily disable new cards until you get comfortable with your seen cards.
>>
>>146820079
Those ones today were all new ones I'd never seen before. I didn't start with the green ones, I just started with the blues and then removed the cap from 0 afterward.

Some of the cards are probably shitty made I guess. I hate doing anki in general. I honestly believe this is probably why the retention is low, I really don't give a fuck and I push again literally half the time. But it's still being honest, cause I really don't know them. But I probably can't make myself care about knowing them either. Idk what to do honestly. I wish there was a better way than Anki but still structured. If I "just read" I'm afraid I won't do enough cause there's no structure to it. With Anki I can at least measure progress.
>>
Is using premade Anki sets actually good? I tried Anki a few months ago (not for Japanese, but that doesn't matter). I could remember the words I added manually, but it was really hard unless I remembered the situation in which I originally found the word. I just kept forgetting the ones of which I forgot the context. Which is why I think using images along with text would be a good idea. Because of this, I don't see premade Anki sets actually working.
>>
>>146820073
Not all shounen is the same. Claiming that all shounen is shit because there are some shit titles is the same as saying that all manga is shit because there are some shit manga out there.
>>
>>146820128
what do then
>>
>>146820182
Some people just can't deal with the environment you get in anki, my retention is pretty low too and it's just because my brain doesn't really function if shit isn't engaging, if you're really that bad at anki though you should be making up for it by reading literally all the time
>>
>>146820182
>I wish there was a better way than Anki but still structured.
You'd just fuck the structure up again and fall into another slump. Like, there's literally no tool offering better structure than Anki with its potential of customization. The fault lies with the user.

A little bit of an update on the dojg index linked on the grammar page of the op site (bit of a mouthful, yeah). Of the Basic volume, I've so converted 100 of the 219 or so concept note images. What I did was work through the largest images, by file size, which means the remaining concepts are on average less than half the size of the ones I've been working on. Should be set to update the Basic/Basic night page/s within the next five days, maybe less, with a completed version.
I must say that from the current state, it is much easier to use as a reference than it was before with all the notes as images.

Here is an example of how all the entries will generally appear, using some of the concepts with larger Notes:
http://bunpou.neocities.org/example.html

Also, do you want me to remove or keep the dynamic wide ゆのっち from the djt.neocities front page? I put it there to see how "wide" I could make it look before the page layout started to fall apart, but forgot to remove it. Probably should have done it on a non-public testing page.

>>
>>146821347
The DoJG Anki deck is one of the worst things ever made.

Grammar should never be done through Anki - unlike vocab, it's too complex and context-reliant to be squeezed onto flashcards, so you either have these enormous cards which are awful for the quick recollection that Anki is designed for, or cards which miss a lot of the depth and subtlety required to actually understand the grammar point in the wild. Consulting DoJG is good and useful, but you should learn grammar from reading. Attempting to do it through Anki will only cripple your progress.

is there no better way to study kanji than just repeatedly going over anki cards? I feel like I'm just repeatedly running against a wall. is there a guide that explains all the radicals that make up kanji? and explains their origins and why they're used this way?
I mean jisho is kinda cool but still doesn't really explain enough to form an idea about kanji. I mix up stuff all the time.

for example, why is there a kanji for room 室 but it's not part of 部屋. why is it that instead of a roof there's a fucking corpse hanging over the person in the second kanji?

I'm sure I'll be able to develop practical memorization techniques over time once I know a large amount of kanji. but to me that seems to be the slower route. I'd rather have aguide explain those patterns to me before I just start learning all those symbols without any guiding principles and spend thousands of hours on doing that.

I stopped looking at statistics entirely and it seems to have been a pretty decent decision. Vocab reviews take less than 20 minutes and it never feels like a chore. I'm a pleb who stopped reviewing the Core2k/6k10k deck a while ago, though, so I've already read and looked up the words in a given context prior to reviewing. It's a trade off between the efficiency of something like Core and the myopic enjoyment of only revising words I care to remember from things I'm reading.

How old is your mining deck? Safe to assume that the retention rate difference between the two is younger cards on the mining deck and matured cards on the Core deck? Plus, Core words are generally pretty common, so you'd naturally expect to have a higher retention simply due to seeing them really, really often in most things you read/listen/watch.

If you are just after single word sound files, the JDIC_audio rip in the Cornucopia of Resources has a lot to work with.
https://mega.nz/#F!elQ2kRQC!KI9Wcdfog_R4QetG_W5JXQ

For example, what I do is with the unzipped archive, when adding new words to my vocab deck, is to use a program to search the computer for certain files (Everything: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everything_%28software%29 but plain old Explorer in Windows does the trick, just slower), open up that directory and post the vocab word in the search bar. That collection has files for a lot of words, not all, but some 100 thousand or so, then copy/paste the mp3 file directly into the audio field of the deck.

You could always keep doing that. You look up words, etc. in the process, I assume? Sure, it may not be as efficient as flash cards but if you are doing something in Japanese you enjoy, you'll probably invest a lot of time into it, which is the largest factor of language acquisition. Exposure and comprehensive input, more or less.

昨⽇、時間がなかったんです。
It was that there was no time yesterday

Where does the ん come from in なかったんです? The rule says conjugate the i-adj to past tense (ない → なかった), then add です, so it would by that rule read as なかったです.

It's my theory that this is an example where んだ has been attached to the already conjugated なかった as an explanatory (which would make sense given the tone of the example), and from there the だ has been dropped for です for polite tone. But this isn't made very clear, and the guide has only so far said that a plain だ is dropped, and made no reference to whether a だ in a んだ or a のだ can be dropped. Am I correct or am I missing something else? Thanks in advance

When it doubt, cross reference. Japanese: The Manga Way is another great little introductory grammar guide that is worth referencing if you have trouble with Tae Kim's grammar guide. So are the Dictionaries of Japanese Grammar, but they can be difficult if you are still learning the basics.
Another good grammar source is Visualizing Japanese Grammar.

Another site, an amateur grammar site similar to Tae Kim, is Maggie Sensei's site.
maggiesensei.com/

It isn't as clean as Tae Kim's Grammar Guide, in fact it is more similar to Imabi in terms of structure, but still another useful site to search for things on if you just can't get your head around something. It may just provide the different perspective needed.
Imabi is the other one I mentioned, but it is far more in-depth than Maggie Sensei and Tae Kim. All there are made by amateurs, as opposed to professional publications such as the DoJG, J:tMW and VJG, but they are pretty damn good in their own right. Imabi might be a bit overwhelming as the author tends to put a lot of information into each lesson, maybe too much for its own good.
http://www.imabi.net/

There's a lot of resources out there for different tastes, really. We have it pretty good as Japanese learners with an English background.

Yeah, I understood you want to replicate that English phrase. I guess you could say it shares the same amount of awkwardness in both English and Japanese, so it might be fine.

It's not a good natural use of ちょうど今 though, that's what I want to point out. I see ちょうど今 more fit to contexts like
>A: Is John here?
>B: He was here just now... [but he's not now].
This is per meaning 1 here
http://thesaurus.weblio.jp/content/ちょうど今
Then meaning 2 is as I said initially, reacting to some singular action occuring. "It happened right now!"

It feels like my head is going to explode when reading Japanese.
I was looking forward to the day where I could start reading, but it's no fun.
I hate it.

I had fun while learning English.
Learning Japanese is pure suffering.

Your first time reading anything in Japanese is going to suck, that's a given. Back when I first read Flyable Heart I wanted to fucking kill myself with how slowly I was reading and how I was spending all of my time just trying to figure out the gist of sentences while having to learn virtually every single new word.

After the first few weeks though I noticed that I was reading faster and could even get through some sentences without having to look up anything because of all the words I had mined previously. The key is to pick easy shit to read, be consistent, and never give up no matter how painful it gets.

Also you might like to refer to this in the future if you ever go into reading VNs.
>>
>>146833133
>>146832840
Yeah, this reminded me. The reason I probably didn't give up on learning Japanese when I first started out reading was because I really really wanted to read Majikoi (some of it was still untranslated at the time). So, you might be a bit fucked unless you have something untranslated that you want to read at all costs. People say motivation is a meme, but it does matter, especially when you're starting out.
>>
>>146833133
>Back when I first read Flyable Heart I wanted to fucking kill myself
Should have done it faggot
>>
>>146833133
As a first foray into untranslated visual novels I'd suggest reading a short work so you don't feel like killing yourself. On the other hand, if you can't motivate yourself to read something without an interesting plot, then I guess you have no choice but to struggle through the initial hurdle of reading visual novels without any real sense of progress.

https://vndb.org/v15636 is a few hours long and a decent read for the sake of practicing and improving your vocabulary (albeit only slightly).
It's free to download too so you don't even have to feel like a pirate when playing it.

No, subvocalization is literally physical.

Subvocalization implies "reading in your head", but "reading in your head" does not imply subvocalization.

You have to find something that you actually want to read very badly, preferably something that doesn't have a translation or only has a bad translation; and it helps to have prior study under your belt.
When your will to read and your existing knowledge lower the suffering below your pain tolerance level, you will be able to keep reading.
Once it clicks and you start wanting to read, you will get better at it, which will motivate you to read and study even more.

Tae Kim is highly regarded here for a reason. It picks a reasonable middle ground between language textbooks and linguistics textbooks.
To improve retention, consider reading each chapter twice before moving to the next one. There are also anki decks with the example sentences from Tae Kim, if you'd like to grind those too.
Also, find a time where you can really devote yourself to study. Public transit works for me, since it's either that or refreshing the same three pages for half an hour.

That's only really practical if you're high enough proficiency that you are rarely having to look anything up. Maybe okay as practice for short periods at a time, but definitely not good for something you want to actually enjoy.

If you can't blame someone, it's intransitive.

"The muscles in my throat move when I read" is different from "I'm subvocalizing". Only a very small amount of research on subvocalizing is reputable and reproducible, and it only concerns subvocalization that represents what the person is reading. This kind of subvocalization (i.e. *real subvocalization*) is not present in neurotypical literates when reading fluently constructed english, even ones who are not speedreading.
