Berserk and Hiatus x Hiatus. Both with abrupt bad endings, like world ending in Berserk and in HxH they reach DC with some huge-ass creature but it ends there with narrator saying that "from that point forward nobody knows what happened" final page with Gon fishing in his island.

>Older manga series lose appeal with younger audiences and don't sell as well anymore.
Kochikame was never popular on ranking polls, many times Jump won't even put it there; the series was a personal pet of all the staff, Akimoto is definitely ending it on his own terms,

Age finally caught up with him, never missing a schedule, producing a weekly manga is quite taxing.

Everyone at Shueshia was likely planning its end on 40th year and 200th volume, all good numbers.
>>
>>146658545
This is actually huge news. If the mods weren't newfags, they'd sticky this shit.
>>
>>146662061
It's Kochikame, so maybe.

Many popular series didn't have WSJ's cover when they ended.

Rurounin Kenshin for one, it ended on the very same issue Naruto debuted, Naruto was the cover.

I don't recall Dragonball having a cover either, although the final chapter was almost all colored.

It must be some internal thing not to have a finishing series get the cover or something, but Kochikame is its own beast maybe it will change that.

This really is a new generation for Jump.
I've been feeling that way since AssClass ended but Kochikame cements it even harder.
>>
>>146659994
Aside from what >>146660396 said, Shogakukan simply can't let Conan end soon (unless they have a major breakout) as it's the main serialization keeping Shounen Sunday alive.
>>
Another event that seemly will have Weekly Shounen Jump advise Eichiro Oda to stretch One Piece for as long as he can, even if he planned to be a long serial, it can go beyond what he originally planned by his Editors shaping its lenght.

Japan's best selling Manga Anthology is losing its hits and not many new series seems to be rightful replacements.

You should watch the Manben episode with the author of Golgo, it's pretty interesting. And says that Golgo is certainly one of the most popular characters in japan.
>>
>>146658574
Even when I'll have grandkids Conan will still try to figure who's "ano kata".
>>
A question from someone who recently got back into keeping up with WSJ after getting into two of their series that are not doing so hot as of late: Is it normal to have this many vacancies in such a short period of time? Mononofu, Nisekoi, Bleach, KochiKame, and soon Takuan within two months or so.
>>
>>146662061
Only Slam Dunk has ever had the honor of ending with a cover. But if anything will ever get it again, it'd be Kochikame and One Piece.
>>
>>146663443
Well Mononofu and Takuan aren't relevant
You forgot Assclass
>>
So Kochikame will end and Takuan is done for. I wonder if any other series needs to end for the next batch of new serialaztions? Maybe the rest are safe for now.
>>
>>146663443
Nope. A lot of "old" series are ending in a short period of time, to the point where soon a manga that started on 2012 will be the second oldest manga on WSJ.
It never happened in such a rush.

Honestly I can't see how WSJ are going to keep getting sales like they used to.
>Bleach
>Gintama
>KochiKame
>AssClass
>Nisekoi
>hell even Toriko.

They were a long runners and all of them end at the same period of time.

What will fill that gap?

Ohba and Obata (as the obvious choice for another long runner at WSJ that'll be a hit) are doing a shitty superpowers series in the monthly magazine.

Also I don't think any of the leaving mangakas will be in such a hurry to start a new series. Maybe Kubo will, considering him being a fat, greedy hack.
Gorilla won't do anything for sure ;_;
>>
>>146663561
You're right, I did.
I wasn't so much considering relevance as I was referring to a concentration of several new serializations.
>>
>>146663679

>>146663729

>>
>>146658545
WOW

Never expected this news.
>>
>>146663443
>Mononofu
>Takuan
Might as well mention Buddy Strike.

Toriko is also seemingly very close to ending, they're facing a villain that's been built up since the beginning and that just screams final boss, but there are teases of a possible Space arc. Might end 2015 or 2016 at this point.

Gintama has announced it's in its final arc. Given how the last couple of arcs have gone, this one will stretch into next year. It will probably end 2016.
>>
>>146663756
No, but it should be.
>>
>>146663679
I doubt Gintama will end before chapter 650
>>
>>146662670
People need to stop putting the blame on editors for every mistake the mangaka does. Editors can't really force any mangaka to stretch out there manga if they don't want to. Have you seen how short AssClass was despite it popularity.

If One Piece goes on forever it'll be purely because of Oda decisions.

Many cameos or other Jump artists drawing short specials with Ryotsu appearing in their universe where written for the 30th anniversary. Ryotsu fining Freeza for parking his ship was the best one.

Technically just in Weekly Shounen Jump.

Jump implies all Jump magazines, so Jojo and Captain Tsubasa are still there.
>>
Rumor has it that the reason why all these relatively long serializations are ending is because of a change in the power balance in Jump itself.
Sasaki failed in creating another 3B and for this he was demoted and sent away. Their current mode of operation is to produce a ton of short serials keep throwing them at their readers in the hope that one will stick. Also they're not looking for another One Piece, or another Naruto. They want something they can serialize and then make into an anime and the anime will be popular enough to sustain itself on sales and other income. They want to maximize profits and reduce costs.

>>
>>146665638
>It was a mistake to let Bleach and Naruto go
Bleach wasn't doing WSJ any favors. I'm pretty sure Naruto ended on it's own terms and let's be real, they didn't exactly "let it go" considering it's still quite alive technically even if Kishi isn't the one drawing.

They definitely let Bleach go though

Bleach was Kubo's own fuckery and wanking over the number 15. If Bleach was being cancelled he would've been told a long time ago and there would've been time to fix things. Instead he keeps hinting at an ending for 4 years and then BAM there it is with no forewarning.

Jump does not cancel series that are more than a hundred chapter long. They give the author a 6 month warning to wrap things up neatly. One as old as and important as Bleach most definitely did not get only 6 months to wrap things up. Not when it has a fucking live action movie in the works. They would've wanted to continue it at least until the movie airs. This is 100% Kubo. He's a millionaire and can keep living off of royalties for the rest of his life if he wants to.
>>
Kochikame ending is not going to effect sales of the magazine the same way AssClass did. Its very much the Japanese equivalent of Garfield which they kept for long either due cred or it was a favorite of the staff.

Confirmed that it's getting the cover for it's last chapter.
Naruto and bleach BTFO.

Oda, Horikoshi (bnha) and Furudate (haikyuu) have their version on the cover.
Other mangaka will have theirs inside the magazine.

The rankings say otherwise. It wouldn't have lasted this long if people didn't like it, and it definetly wouldn't be getting an anime.
Plus, it's even published in English on the same week in Shonen Jump Alpha.

>What is Narurihyon no Mago

>>146659639
The same trajectory, anyway.
The Simpsons lost it when their excellent writers like Conan O'Brien, Jay Kogen, Al Jean and Mike Reiss left.
It went from madcap iconoclasty and satire that spared no one; to contemporary establishment advocacy and quasi-leftish morality tales, It's only real targets are the modern clerisy's social bug-bears, and preachy just isn't funny.

Kochikame however just got tired and old and Akimoto half assed things for a while, but he didn't ruin his formula.
>>
>>146673569
>You do realize that the rankings are mandated by the editorial staff and hey choose which position a series is put in right?
Nope, the rankings are based on the popularity from reader surveys. It's why Bleach was almost always dead last.

>What stupid logic especially when its not even 10 volumes in.
It's not stupid logic. Jump is ruthless, if a series doesn't gather as much popularity from the polls, they'll cancel it. Even if a series doesn't have enough for a Tankobon they'll cancel it without giving it a chance to prove its worth. If Black Clover wasn't popular, they would have canceled it and replaced it with another series, hoping that the new series would be more popular.
There's no way that "editorial interference" could allow a series to last 10 volumes without reader support.

>You mean an OVA for Jump Festa? Something that most Jump manga gets?
Most don't actually. The vast majority of series to get an OVA get an anime the next year.

>So are several other series. It also sold like shit in America..

What argument? You said not every Jump manga gets a Jump Festa OVA which is false quite a lot of them do and how does that even correlate to it getting an anime? The Beelzebub anime was announced at the same timeframe as the Jump Festa OVA so it was always planned. Takeshi Den got a Jump Festa OVA but was never made into an anime despite its popular BEFORE the mangaka got arrested. All you're doing is talking out your ass.

India seems to like Kochikame a lot. I typed it up in Youtube a few weeks ago to see what it was like and I only saw Indian dubs of it. Just because it's not in your scope of view doesn't mean it isn't a big deal.

Besides, even if it's not your specific cup of tea, it's not easy to draw 20 pages a week for forty years. Most people retire after 20 years of work, and Mangaka are notorious for having bad working conditions too. I'm not saying you need to like the manga, just consider that others do, and above all give your respects to the man working on it. It takes strength and dedication to do this stuff.

I said I respect Akimoto for working on something for so long and at a consistent work schedule I just don't think Kochikame should be revered when the only thing of worth it had is that its lasted for 40 years and the cast is as static as they were since it started in 1975. It really has not aged well. I wished that the anime had not gotten canned 12 years ago just to make this monumental occasion more special but all its getting is a TV special.

Postcards have become a huge mistake. 60 - 80% of the senders are female, but they only account for just over 30% of Jump readers.

Boys don't bother sending in the postcards or fan letters, a this fucks with the results.

In the old days when female readership was practically nonexistent it wasn't an issue, but nowadays it skews the polling to more female friendly titles.

REASONS WHY KOCHIKAME IS GOOD

1. It's actually funny. I don't think any manga has made me laugh so much.

2. It's wildly varied. There are warm nostalgic episodes, wild satirical episodes, weird nonsensical episodes etc. Anyone who thinks there's a "formula" is dead wrong. There are about 20 formulas-- varying from shitamachi nostalgia episodes to Ryotsu vs. God.

3. When it's not funny it's usually very clever. People are calling this a gimmick but there are more clever ideas per page than any other manga.

4. The anime is very strong. Good gags, voice acting and direction. Again-- genuinely funny. Maybe now it will get a full DVD or even BluRay release. The fact that Kochikame is not entirely available now is maybe the biggest travesty in anime.

5. It's relatively easy to read and makes a great starting point for anyone wanting to read raw manga.

the manga has certainly declined in quality over 40 years but it's still one of the only things I'll read in WSJ. I doubt the three separate volumes of reprints that are published every month (to this day, and more than any other manga) will go away any time soon. People love this shit.

> once they realized she was a money grubbing prostitute
Anon, that was the whole fucking point - he was specifically charged with violating child prostitution laws.

> all the charges were dropped fast
Charges were never dropped. He was convicted, sentenced, and given a suspension on that sentence that then somehow snowballed into him getting off scot-free, probably because of Shueisha.

Not really, Kimetsu and Isobee both sell less than 20k before falling off the top 50. Maybe they eventually crawl their way up in the months afterward but their sales are still abysmal. And they both seem pretty safe in the magazine right now. Toriko is in more danger than they are, and it sells over 200k.

Jesus christ, did this have berserk style haituses or something? How do you even stretch 200 volumes across 40 years?

It's a gag comedy manga. It's like the Simpsons of Japan.
>>
>>146685149
On the contrary, never a single break. That's why it holds the record for longest manga. By starting year, it isn't oldest, but every other long runner has taken enough hiatuses so that Kochikame has the single highest volume count in the industry.
>>
>>146685007
Isobee is Jaguar tier, so has a immunity for a while, meanwhile Yaiba is just a average series who only will have 7 volumes like Magico or Shinigami.
>>
>>146685149
>Jesus christ, did this have berserk style haituses or something?
The opposite actually
>>
>>146685368
I wonder if Jump will let Isobee get to 10 years like Jaguar did. To its advantage, it's currently the only gag series in the mag. And by gag manga, I mean it only has only 10 page chapters like Kochikame and Jaguar. Gintama and Saiki are comedies but have more continuity and longer chapters. So Isobee's the last "true" gag manga.
>>
>>146685837
More like Isobee hasn't plot, like Kochikame.
>>
>>146685837
I sure hope so, Isobee is pretty much the only thing from Jump I follow.
>>
>>146686575
Is it too difficult to translate the gags without 5 or so pages of TL notes? I really like the visual style but the lack of translation means I can't read it anytime soon.
>>
>>146686739
Depends on the series, you know how they fucking love kanji puns over there. As for Isobee, no, it doesn't need much notes. Most of them would be just some background info about Edo period anyway.

YOu must have seen the pornos, the main female character's big titties are in loads and the main male guy often makes a cameo in them.

Search sadpanda for "redlight" and "reiko of joytoy". Plus there's that series of doujins, what's it called, ricecooker explosion or something like that?

wonderful.
the main difference I see between the anime and the manga is that the anime tried to play up a romance between Reiko and Ryotsu.

In the manga he treats her like shit. At least in the stories I've read.

I fucking love Ryotsu. I read one last week in which he was complaining about foreigners winning all the lotteries. Then he criticizes Bucho (who wins the lottery) for not expressing his happiness physically like a foreigner. He's a bundle of entertaining contradictions.

Also, I believe every manga that's been running longer than it is biweekly or monthly. Obviously that means fewer chapters per volume, but I think weeklies still rack them up faster.

>>
so will One Piece or HxH end first?
>>
>>146689238
One Piece has around 8-12 years left.

HxH has 2-3 arcs left (including the current one). But they'll all probably be very long, roughly CA arc length. It took Togashi 8+ years to finish the Ant arc because of the hiatuses. So really it all depends on Togashi.
>>
>>146665902

>Jump does not cancel series that are more than a hundred chapter long.

How fucking delusional can you be. If a manga isn't selling well enough by itself and isn't a good pitch to venture into multimedia venturing and bullshit merchandising, it's canned. They could give a fuck how old or long it is.

Like that other anon said, Saint Seiya was dropped harder than dubstep when Bandai bailed out from making more shitty toys and other bullshit accessories. Bleach is exactly the same shit since it was selling itself purely on the merit of the manga alone, losing every other media along the years, and that shit isn't enough for Shonen Jump.

Shonen Jump doesn't care about manga, they care about brands. These arbitrary rules you people make it are all in your head.
>>
>>146658545
Who gives a fuck? Only chinks love it.
>>
>>146689238
I think both have about equal amounts of story left, 65 to 70 percent done. Going to guess One Piece ends first. I think both have at least 8 years to finish. Togashi depending on his breaks could go another 18 years.
>>
>>146689627
disagree

chinks like pedo moeshit
>>
>>146689238
Going by both their hiatuses, currently Oda takes a break every month so about 36 chapters a year on average, Togashi makes a volume every one and a half years so about 8 chapters a year on average. Oda will end in about 10 years. Togashi will end in about 15 years.
>>
>>146663679
People are guaranteed to keep buying WSJ for as long OP is running so they still have over a decade to find successors.

If anything, now's a good time to purge 1/3 of the old and shitty ones and start fresh. If they let shit like Kochikame, Bleach, Toriko and Nisekoi run for another 5 years they might be in trouble.
>>
>>146674730

>>
>>146689238
Togashi already having sights on his next work being a card battle manga makes me believe that HxH is near its end or can end at any moment given the current stakes of the arc it just depends how often he dishes out new chapters. One Piece is 70% done at this point and I'll say he'll wrap things up for its 25th anniversary in 6 years.
>>
>>146692178
No way Oda can finish One Piece in 6 years with his breaks. Not unless abandons major plotlines like Elbaf.
>>
>>146692558
Its just a guessitimate but I do believe someone already calculated how much of the story is left and said that it'll end within 10 years or more so many its 30th anniversary?
>>
>>146688800
>Also, I believe every manga that's been running longer than it is biweekly or monthly.
Yes, Golgo 13 is a monthly series and it has been running for longer than Kochikame, but the series takes lots of breaks, it has reached a system where it is basically a "season" of chapters then a period where nothing is released.

Kochikame holds the title of continuously running manga, meaning it is the only manga in history that has reached the 200 volume mark due the author never taking breaks.

If Golgo 13 didn't have breaks, even by being monthly, it sure would have been beyond the current 186 Volumes mark it has currently.
>>
>>146692178
Big Mom isn't going down this arc, so after Tottoland, we still need arcs for Wano, Big Mom, Big Mom, Elbaf, Vegapunk, Raftel, Revolutionaries, Blackbeard, Sakazuki, Void Century, Gorosei, etc.

These last two years have been wild. I wasn't invested into Kochikame very much, but Jesus it finally wrapping up is like seeing an old relative for the last time, the one you always thought would be there. At least, unlike those old relatives, Kochikame gets to end on their own terms instead of the mangaka dying early or something.

In the 30th anniversary the series that didn't have a full crossover with Kochikame at least had Kankichi Ryotsu make a random background cameo in them.

It's the longest running anime ever, the manga and the author died years ago.

The ratings were dropping last time I heard.
>>

No way, my understanding is that Sazae-san's entire schtick is that it's sort of like the discount DVDs Mothers buy in grocery stores on their way out. Its a family friendly series that doesn't cost one thousand dollars to own, and is widely popular and cheap. It makes an assload of money too, so ratings dipping probably doesn't matter.

I don't understand this mentality. The manga was good at the time, and, despite the pace drastically speeding up, it's good now. Why wouldn't it be comparable?
>>
>>146694573
No, there won't be a space arc.

He's literally tying up all the loose ends with the God arc. Unless something like Toriko Z happens, where it restarts as a completely new series, Toriko will go the way of all unpopular WSJ manga.
>>
Hope he retires and is able to spend time with his family.
>>
>>146694950
Dragon Ball and One Piece are Jump's two biggest manga of all time.

Toriko wasn't even the most popular manga of it's era. Bakuman sold more. Kuroko eventually sold more.
>>
>>146693473
Yeah, the series went downhill after start of the tournament arc in episode 6921.
>>
>>146694950
>Why wouldn't it be comparable?
A series must go through the test of time and quality to be eligible for crossovers and specials with other giants.

Regardless of quality Toriko had no place having a crossover with Dragonball and One Piece; it would need to be a long running series which kept running by its own merit, not due sucking Oda's dick, to rightfuly crossover with DB and OP.

That started over 1 year ago when he began to skip pretty much everything, like Blue Grill and the collecting of the remaining Food Treasures, but it's still here.

I don't see it getting cancelled when they started the cancellation process over 1 year ago and it's still not over. They either let him have the time to finish it in a good way or it doesn't get cancelled.
>>
>>146695212
Nobody's saying it's getting cancelled but like you said, it's skipping through things. It's clearly been given then "time to end this soon" treatment
