Why did Alice in Wonderland explode in Japan? There's gotta be an uncountable number of manga, anime, games, and fanart out there that reference, retell, or take inspiration from Through the Looking Glass.

Sure, it's big in the West but that makes sense - it was made here.

Is it simply because Alice is a qt loli who goes on a magical adventure?
>>
it really does seem like an anime plot with a loli and everything

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_Liddell#.22Cut_pages_in_diary.22

>The relationship between the Liddells and Dodgson suffered a sudden break in June 1863. There was no record of why the rift occurred, since the Liddells never openly spoke of it, and the single page in Dodgson's diary recording 27–29 June 1863 (which seems to cover the period in which it began) was missing;[citation needed] it has been speculated by biographers such as Morton N. Cohen that Dodgson may have wanted to marry the 11-year-old Alice Liddell, and that this was the cause of the unexplained break with the family in June 1863.[9] It was long suspected that her mother became uncomfortable with the idea of a grown man befriending her 11-year-old daughter.[citation needed]

>In 1996, Karoline Leach found what became known as the "Cut pages in diary" document[10]—a note allegedly written by Charles Dodgson's niece, Violet Dodgson, summarising the missing page from 27–29 June 1863, apparently written before she (or her sister Menella) removed the page. The note reads:

>> "L.C. learns from Mrs. Liddell that he is supposed to be using the children as a means of paying court to the governess—he is also supposed soon to be courting Ina"[citation needed][page needed]

>This might imply that the break between Dodgson and the Liddell family was caused by concern over alleged gossip linking Dodgson to the family governess and to "Ina" (Alice's older sister, Lorina).[citation needed] In her biography The Mystery of Lewis Carroll, Jenny Woolf suggests that the problem was caused by Lorina becoming too attached to Dodgson and not the other way around.[citation needed] Woolf then uses this theory to explain why "Menella [would] remove the page itself, yet keep a note of what was on it." The note, she submits, is a "censored version" of what really happened, intended to prevent Lorina from being offended or humiliated at having her feelings for Dodgson made public.[11][page needed]

I believe there are two official dubs. I have only seen one of them, which is the newer one. They do a good job with it, but I would imagine that for people who watched the English version first it is not as good. I saw the English one at my grandparent's house in America a year or so after I originally saw it so I still enjoy both of them.

I really do want to see the old Japanese dub though. I have seen clips of it around and in them Alice sounds way cuter than she does in the newer one.

Is she just the girl who popularized the kind of young, cute and elegant looking blonde fiction characters they adore over there? Like she was the original that served as one of the biggest inspirations for early character design in manga and anime which only grew in decades after?
>>
>>146608645
It indeed was bullshit.
My research into newspaper accounts of the wedding indicate that Charlie gave her a doll for Christmas in 1936, just a month before he married her. Reporters photographed her holding the doll and somehow the story evolved that it was a wedding gift.

Tennessee had laws on the books setting a minimum age for marriage, but there were problematic aspects of it that caused it to be null and void, so it was done away a few months before without setting a new minimum age, so it became legal for her to marry Charlie. Immediately after the news of the wedding broke, Tennessee legislators put aside all other business to quickly enact new laws setting a minimum age, which I believe was fourteen with parental consent and sixteen without it. The governor said the marriage disgraced the whole state!

Charlie determined he was going to marry Eunice but didn’t tell her when. He had a friend go to the county seat and acquire a marriage license for him and Eunice, putting her age at 18. On the morning they were wed, he took her to find the local pastor, who married them in the middle of the road. Their parents didn’t know she was married until it was too late. Her parents were upset but let the marriage stand. The newlyweds had no home of their own. They lived for years with his parents.

Charlie may have promised not to have sex with Eunice until she was sixteen, but clearly he didn’t keep his word. Eunice had their first child when she was fourteen. Newspaper accounts say he went squirrel hunting all day on the day she gave birth.
>>

Before Lolita and Lolicons, there was Alice and the Alicons. Alice complex refers to girls between 7 and 12. Lolis are between 12 and 15. So technically, Alice, not Lolita, is the codifier of pedophillic fanbases. Lolita represents hebephiles.

Though technically speaking, that's more a Japanese thing, where only Lolicon is really known in the West. And Lolicon is strictly fictional where it's actual children as well in Japan.

Little Red is often taken as a very sexually charged tale, and that's probably true. Lots of variations are really fucked up and violent so it wouldn't surprise me if rotkappchen is actually a warning to girls about talking to strangers and getting raped.

>>146608929
Well, elegant looking. I believe he's specifically referring to Disney's Alice (loosely based on the illustrations of the original) as part of that inspiration, which is probably a good starting point (and I don't have any examples of soviet art that would counter that claim, which is often made). As a character she's quite emotional, but in the animation she moves with grace (even when she's not graceful) and beauty, because it's a fucking Disney animation and she's often framed in shots like a contemporary, beautiful hollywood actress.

I should have pointed out that Alicon is pretty much out of use. It came first and was replaced in common lexicon with Lolicon for everything. I'm not sure how widespread the use of alicon was to begin with.

I mostly pointed out the distinction because it's sort of ironic that alice in an alice thread is a lolita when she was her own thing at a point. In other words, the post is pure pedantry, and possibly interesting to some.

This. A lot of classic tales were very sexyually charged because they weren't kids tales, but adult tales.
Little red was originally 14 or 15 I believe, and the story ended after the wolf suggested her to take her clothes and get in the bed.so she didn't get cold and she starts doing it.
On the other hand Snow White was 8, and the prince took her to his palace before she woke up, so our hero was a pedo-necrophile.
>>
When I was little, I ship The Little Prince with Alice.
Then I grew up and realized I was projecting myself with The Little Prince.

Her father and Cleveland were friends, he met her for the first time shortly after she was born and doted on her as she was growing up, he even bought a baby carriage for her. Her father died without leaving a will so a court appointed Grover administrator of it when she was 11. They got married a decade later when she was 21 and he was 49, announcing their engagement only five days before the ceremony.

>their marriage inspired a film
>By couching the film as a social issue it was produced outside the jurisdiction of the Production Code; this allowed the filmmaker to include a nude scene featuring 12 year-old Shirley Mills. One of the film’s central plotlines was a crusade to end child marriage in Tennessee and indeed the film exhorts its viewers to “Abolish child marriage,” all this despite the fact that child marriage actually had been legally abolished in Tennessee by the time the film was finished, this a result of the original hubbub over the Johnses’ marriage. Thus, the film exploits its convention in order to titillate its audience with the nude and sexualized Shirley Mills, whose own supposed sexual exploitation is the very premise for the outrage that undergirds the making of the film itself. The film thus prolonged the imagination and fetishization of the Johnses’ rural backwoods sexuality.

It's the Disney animation, just look at the design. The Japanese love them. Frozen was massively popular there too, "let it go" in Engrish was actually on the list of most important new Japanese words that year.

It just didn't leak over to anime, because they can't use it because of copyright laws. But copyright doesn't apply to the original looking glass book. Anyone is free to use the setting.

This is from an interview with her mother, two weeks after marriage.
Although she and her husband Were unaware that Charlie and Eunice were planning to marry last January 14, Mrs- Winstead said,
"We knew it was going to happen
eventually because Eunice has been in love
for the longest with Charlie, and he has loved her since the first time he has seen her."
The mother said about a year ago,Eunice went through Charlie's pockets and "found a picture of a woman from across the mountain."She was so mad that she teared it up in little pieces and hid them under a rock pile, where I guess they still are, the mother said". "Why only a week ago, that child came dancing
through the house singing: I love Charlie from the bottom of my heart" at the top of her voice."
> and he has loved her since the first time he has seen her."
I wonder how old she was when he saw her for the first time.

>Impressive that their marriage lasted until death.
>Actually believing it wouldn't.
Nigga, the strongest marriages on average are with virgins who never had any other partner in life.
Not to mention, this took place in the 30s where the whole marriage thing was actually taken seriously and with the commitment to last until death actually being a matter of course and not something to be surprised about.
Financial independence and having women pursue careers ruined marriage forever, you wouldn't see many women slutting about and being proud of it if they were wholly dependent on a single man.
I have no idea why women gave up the NEET life happily and made life worse for everybody; yeah, sure, back then being a housewife was monotonous and actually required work, but now? You have machines that do 80% of the job for you, cooking has never been easier and with such diverse options. If you make cleaning a habit then that shit will only take you a leisurely daily hour at most that you can clog up with music, radio, podcasts, fucking audiobooks, anything.
Imagine being a woman in this modern age where the only expectation was to find a man, be able to work a washer and pump out a kid or two, which can now be controlled by the massive proliferation of contraception, it would be fucking glorious, all we had to fucking do was spend like two hours housekeeping and then we could spend the rest of the time between 45 minutes of cooking just lazing about playing vidya, watching anime or reading manga.
For being denied my NEET rights I will never forgive those bitches.

It is still possible to be a housewife today. I plan to be a house wife after I finish my college degree. My husband is an engineer and will make enough money for us both.

Just keep yourself pure and marry someone who will make a decent amount of money. People in trades or engineers usually make enough and the types of people in these fields will often support the house wife lifestyle.

Women are brainwashed into thinking they have to become wage slaves and ride the cock carousel. The pressure from society is intense and other women look down on those who choose to be housewives, outside of certain communities where it's more accepted such as among evangelical Christians.

It's also a more precarious choice than it used to be, in this age where many people are forced to move from job to job every few years. Also, in the big cities where the best jobs are, paying for housing is more expensive than ever if you want to avoid dangerous shitskin-infested areas, so a lot of households find it hard to get by without two or more working adults.
>>
>>146611503
Wish I was born in the 30's desu senpai.

>I have no idea why women gave up the NEET life happily
Because stupid feminists felt like they needed to prove women are better than man and that they can anything a guy does and they can pump out kids at the same time, wich men can't.
And guess what? It backfired on them. So far they have only proved they can't. Most woman end placing their work over marriage and kids as their priorities, so you either have women in their 30's that haven't had any serious relationship, or women that barely pay attention to her kids because they are too busy working.

Yeah, must be great to be 100% dependent on your husband, even if he beats the shit out of you and you can't do anything about it, because you need the money.
Must be great that the husband can be as promiscuous as he wants, because he knows that the wife has to endure being cheated on, lest she wants to lose everything she has.
Must be great if what's keeping your marriage together is only necessity and force, rather than free will.

You also lie to yourself that the only configuration where that could happen is the one where the woman is the housewife, but how about YOU stay at home and be a dependent househusband? Sounds like a bad deal? It has the same "upsides" you just praised, you hypocrite.

So, Alicons go frim 7 to 12 and lolicons from 9 to 14.
We need to come with a clever name for the 9 to 12 intersection.

>Wanting to be a wagecuck

This desu. My dad still thinks I'm wears and there's something wrong with me the fact that I don't want to work and would rather stay home all day playing video games or browsing the net if I could choose. He thinks that's a sign of mental illness or "low self esteem" since in his opinion it's not taking "pride in oneself and wanting to accomplish shit and leave one's mark on the world."

All the while I'm just laughing to myself on what an incredible idiot cuck he and the rest of society's normalfag wage-slaves are: They've been brainwashed by society to just be another cog in a machine instead of using their personal free time to do what THEY want to do and have fun and relax. They've literally convinced themselves this path makes them more worthwhile as human beings meanwhile I'm getting a good night's sleep every night, have no stress and satisfying my needs to the fullest while they're using the majority of their time to do hard mental and/or physical labor all while convincing themselves that I'M the one the mental illness if saying I'd never choose to work.

Non-NEETs practically define Stockholm Syndrome.

I'm glad, I love the general universe with Alice and the different canons that people have taken liberty with (the awesome games, and a few dark adventure novels out there)

Let's get real here. Alice probably sounded hot enough to disregard age if it drove the creator to create a gigantic world with her starring in it.
>>
>>146613787
You really have zero reading comprehension.
The claim wasn't that the vast majority of marriages was abusive and had the husband cheating, but that the the outcome of those marriages is one of increased dependencies, which lower the requirement for abuse, cheating and staying together out of necessity, rather than free will.

You should really think about how your assblastedness colours your reading and clouds your judgement. This motivated reasoning from your political zeal in your holy fight against feminism is simply not constructive.
>>
>>146617882
>Lmao
>>
A little bit of stress is actually healthy. There's also the question of how you're going to fund your fun and relaxation, and other bills, if you don't work and don't want to depend on leeching off of others. Finally, there's not only people who have their jobs as hobbies, but also those who made their hobbies into jobs, so those don't have to conflict. It's hard for everyone to be able to do that, of course, but not even trying to get that is pretty sad.

>Non-NEETs practically define Stockholm Syndrome.

Well, in other times in exchange for working your ass off for your family you had the chance to actually have one. No frivolous divorce, no child support, no used-up slut for wife, no "equality", no feminist culture clipping your balls off. The man provided, but also was actually the head of the family. Maybe it's not your thing but it's probably for the majority of men.

Now men get to keep all the responsibilities, none of the powers.

Did he make the right choice? Is /pol/ right? Are Asian women are last refuge for traditional family values in a world where the cock carousel, "stronk independant Western Woman" has taken over American womanhood?

Did that woman's American husband just get redpilled?

The original work (Alice's Adventures Under Ground) is actually a book he wrote to teach Alice (the IRL one) formal logic.
The current version (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland) is the commercial one and thereference to formal logic were toned down.

>the reason she supposedly got married was b/c in Tennessee at that time it was legal for a married child to not attend school? Apparently Eunice’s teacher was particularly fond of corporal punishment and she did it to escape the whippings. Not only was legislation quickly passed in Tennessee to outlaw 9yos being able to get married, a law was passed requiring married children to attend school.

>I also found a thread on a genealogy site by a guy who searched out Eunice and met her in the mid-90s. He said she was delightful and had stayed married to Charley until he died in the 90s.

Tell that to the shoujo crowd. Any given Alice there has some measure of elegance mixed in.

Come to think of it, she had pretty much anything a shoujo could ask for. Beautiful gitl, the undivided attention of the world around her, magic and whimsy and the fact that she's English for Japan's raging England boner. All they needed to do is give her love interests and they're set.

I'm still surprised there has been no adaptation like that. It would be hard because of the rhymes and wordplay but it should be interesting regardless.
