It went from a great interesting episodic premise of the main character being a devil attorney redeeming cases of people being sent to hell while being innocent
It had a nice mix of action, mystery, and mostly suspence. It was great, the cases had likable characters and were memorible for the most part. There was even a nice card system implemented in the manga.
Few cases later it drops the act and goes full battle genre and turns into a smelly piece of shit
The shift to the genre was so retarded too
It just shows this childhood freind get blown up in front of Kukabara's house (MC) so he drops his attorney job and goes straight for his evil brother in hell who in the end turns out he wasn't so evil after all.
I forgot, then there was a training arc where Kukabara had to learn to combine the use of holy and demonic energy to get a new form by playing tennis

Well, Helck had always been talking about how he wanted to kill all humans in the early chapters, despite being a human himself. It was either brain damage or severe trauma. We got the latter. I think the author simply started off as comedy to give the tragedy part a greater impact on the reader and also to get a solid fanbase early - since it's already full of edge manga and if helck had started as that nobody would've really paid attention to it.

This is actually my favorite thing after rushed endings to an axed manga (I don't know why).
The best examples are Mahou Sensei Negima and Medaka Box, already mentioned.

A good example is I am an hero but it shifts genre really really early so it depends.

Princess Tutu goes edgy pretty fast, Madoka-style.

Aa! Megami-sama has a breaking point of FUCKING RAGE which I am not going to spoil.

Tsubasa went the EDGY route in the middle, expected of Clamp.

One of the unexpected twists and added seriousness was in Trigun, however I have a duckling's syndrome.

Kaoru is still in love with Minamoto but in addition to Minamoto beginning to gain feelings for her and Hyobu's mix of admiration and obsession they introduce a new guy with glasses whose entire character is that he wants to fuck Kaoru (and getting frustrated because he knows she only has eyes for Minamoto). I'm trying to come up with a mango right now based on this premise. At first I just wanted a mango that changes genre with each chapter or episode the way Walking Dead shifts every half season, but I'm just fooling myself. I know to /a/ it will just be lopped up with these. So the question is, where do I have to play it safe to ensure you take the bait and stay hooked?

Please keep in mind that my mango has no fan-service. The first "season" is kinda Rurouni Kenshin season 1, but more cerebral. It's about a guy learning to integrate peacefully into society, while others want a piece of him, and how he has to cope with that. Gradually, the power scales keep rising though with technology until it may be full-blown Gundam. (Obviously the concept of "time" is very loose in my series.)

Well it wasn't totally sudden, the whole debacle with the berserker knight in the green desert was somewhat early on and that was the first really soul crushing moment that hit us. Not just that but it foreshadowed quite a great deal of heavy plot stuff that was soon to come so it's not like it was just thrown in there haphazardly to make us cry, it was actually quite important which is what gives it so much weight in addition to the sheer contrast with the manga's usually upbeat tone.

The thing I think I respect about the story most is how clear it is by the way things panned out that the author knew what he was doing from the very beginning. Going back and rereading the earlier chapters are slightly mindblowing how so many little details and elements you may not have paid much attention to before were actually building up to something much bigger all the way from the beginning. Last I was reading old hag was sending the kids on a fact finding mission because she was dying and hyobu was doing his 'mind wiped child mode chills with the girls for a while'. The series needed/needs to actually get serious and have death in front of the girls. Hyobu is actually killing people and getting shit done, mostly off screen. Whilst MC solves everything without bloodshed with 'plothax wings'.

It's got a nice foundation, it just needs to permanently get some stakes. Hyobu and hag have had the 'we are old and dying' thing going on for too damn long.

DGM I think went from very generic shounen to clusterfuck. The tone certainly changed after ark arc/level 4 and I'm not sure the endless wave of power ups are over, but at least it's more plot focused now.

The core story doesn't even seem to have needed those hundreds of chapters with power ups every now and then, did she want it to be a generic battle shounen at the start? I've always hated how during the level 4 and alma arc the noah didn't kill fucking everyone, when it was clearly possible. Typical boring villain has the capability to remove it's opponent but gloats and doesn't bother, then complains later when they are a threat again.

It's more the tone. Guts gathers a gaggle of children because he has issues and can't just kill them or tie them up and leave. He happens upon actual magic and gives his RPG band enchanted weapons. I've not felt like they are in danger at all for a long time.

The quest itself is more on the adventure side, conquest is mostly over and it's not like we've been privy to the battle tactics and politics even during GA. The tone may not be so bad if I read it all at once, the 8~ years of boat may have skewed how I feel about the arcs past conviction.
