I more or less agree, but I think the fact that it betrayed everyone's expectations was what gave it most of the hate. If it was just marketed as a loli tournament anime beforehand with zero connection to Nanoha, it probably wouldn't have left such a sour taste in so many people's mouths. Her berserking at Sieg made for a nice fight but in terms of actual story it had nothing to do with anybody whatsoever. Afterwards they just become friendly and have another belka flashback storytime about why it happened, and everyone stops caring. Rio was another good fight, but again, they were just strangers in combat that didn't have much to do with eachother.

Corona being the last battle of the anime was quite ideal since it's one of the only actual conflicts between developed characters in the entire manga so far, and serious conflicts between developed (and sympathetic) characters is what the Nanoha franchise lives on. Not to mention how shit it would have been to end with Einhart getting stomped out of the tournament immediately after beating Corona, who cared more about winning than anyone in the group.

High stakes don't necessarily have to be physical or tangible. Sports as a genre thrives on creating high emotional stakes by placing heavy emphasis on the characters' drive to win, dedication to training, pride etc.

Vivid was both low stakes physically and emotionally, the characters almost never showed any true effort and most of the drama was in fact completely unrelated to the actual sporting element of the story. The only ones in Vivid who went the extra mile and raised the emotional stakes of their tournament fights were Corona and Miura.

The highest stake for Fate for example was never the physical punishments she'd receive from her mother, it was the emotional abuse she was put through and her love never being reciprocated.

A's was the same way, Hayate dying wasn't the important thing at stake. It was the love that the knights had for Hayate that made it important.

Physical stakes are completely unnecessary, Vivid fundamentally failed to create compelling conflict on an emotional level.

Timeskips are a fairly common thing in manga and let us experience characters at different point in their lives. However for some reason magical girl shows rarely do this, despite burgeoning maturity being a fairly common theme. Getting to see the end result of that growth, even if we unfortunately weren't privy to all of it, was something I felt made Nanoha stand out far more than the sexy lolis did.

I was surprised that the Maou and Angel hero girl backstory was even covered since they weren't new characters. Remember that one episode with the bunny arab kid with a crossbow who liked Leo? This was unavoidable in StrikerS as you only have a limited amount of time for each episode.
