I would say watch Macross again, because it's definitely not lacking. The slow build up between Hikaru and Misa intersecting with his growing disillusionment with Minmay up until episode 27 is excellent. Hikaru and MIsa go from being antagonistic towards each other, but as the series progressive (really from the Mars episode), the two start using each other as a stress relief, finding comfort and camaraderie in each other. I don't see how you can say that their interaction is lacking, when you have moments like pic related, or episode 12 when the two of them are trapped on the Zentradi fleet, episode 19 where they meet after Roy's death, or episode 21, where they're trapped during the Macross's transformation after watching Shao pai Long, etc. The thing about Misa and Hikaru's interaction is that it's based on developing an understanding that continues to grow with the passing episodes. You see from with each of their subsequent encounters that they become more and more open with each other, confiding with each other their inner feelings and fears. This is a gradual build up that pays off by episode 36.

Also, I would say that DYRL does not handle things better than SDF, Hikaru's wishy washy, as annoying as it can be, is not bad, but is necessary as Hikaru struggles between chasing an ideal or being with something that's real/tangible. DYRL's triangle only works by completely removing Minmay from the equation for a large chunk of the film and then unjustifiably having Hikaru later reject her upon their reunion.

First cour was pretty good. Problems started in second cour

Episode 14 didn't really do anything.
15 was bland but at least let us view the Windies side.
16 was good for triangle development and also Freyja's views on singing and her lifespan
17 was bomb because Walkure concert
18 was good bcs shit hit the fan with Hayate and Freyja's resonance and Mikumo blowing up the protocolture ruins
19 was ok-ish but a bit over the place.
20 was decent but it was scattered pacing all around.
21 was OK because Walkure backstory but also felt filler-ish
22 was OK but a lot of parts just leave you like WTF. Cassims death was the highlight for me.

Overall though, I'd have cut it off at episode 13. As it stands now, second cour is pretty much more misses than hits.

I don't know. Most of the Frontier cast was completely forgettable and the main triangle was less likable. While only 3-4 characters from either faction in Delta get any plot relevance, they'we all much more memorable and add to the world. I would trade all that for the dogfights Frontier had though.

After Mikumo became unconscious from the event of ep18 and was taken by Xhaos, Walkure went to search her but got caught and then put into jail. I thought they were going to struggle or the Delta squad and Freyja were going to save but no, Mikumo came out of nowhere and then they went out without a single conflict or obstacle. Literally what the fuck?
I also think that Delta has too much characters and none of them is properly developped. THEY ARE JUST THERE. You could change them or put another character in their place and nothing would have been changed.

Bobby was a joke, and for joke and mascot characters Bogue has more going on than him. Michael was very likeable, but he didn't have an arc of his own and was merely used as a plot device for Alto to get over his indecisiveness. Compared to him, I thought they did a better job with Messer. Klan, again, likeable but didn't have an arc like, say, Kaname does. And as for Grace, compared to her I find Roid a lot more interesting and complex, because at the end of the day TVGrace was just a butthurt scientist trying to get revenge on her peers via ruining the lives of Sheryl and Ranka.

I liked the main trio in Frontier and thought they had good development, and from the secondary cast the ones who stood out the most were Ozma and Brera, who you didn't even mention when he had a pretty clear and well-written arc.

Personally, I've hated these posts for a while now. But after seeing how things have gone, I wouldn't say it's much of a stretch. First volume sold 10k. Second volume 8k. And these are volumes that have first cour episodes, the episodes where shit was still good and decent.

By the time volumes get to around episodes 19-onwards, I think it'd be reasonable if sales have dropped to around 5k-ish. Delta isn't doing so hot anymore. Japs are pretty disappointed as well

Now look at it this way.

Yes, they used a lot of troupes the Japanese culture, regarding relationships in fiction, gets a boner over them.

These troupes are mostly the reason why I believe Nips like it so much in contrast with Hayate/Mirage. I mean aside that Hayate/Mirage had potential at the begining the moment it start including all these troupes to Hayate/Freyja, Nips ate it up like there was no tomorrow.

I'm not sure I'd ascribe it to either triangle. The whole plot revolves around Windermere and most of the major characters come from there. It's relevant to the main story, not just some sub-plot.
