It was essentially like Greek myth on a modern level, like cape comics. The sheer scale of power that the characters are illustrated to have is staggering, which appeals to a lot of fundamental emotions and interests of people, plus it was animated when the japanese cocaine money bubble hadn't burst yet so the animation was p cool.

It was a cool action series that had fighting, but didn't shit itself with absurdly broken magical powers and plot lines like most other series afterwards did. All Toriyama did was make a series that young boys liked.
