Well, everyone loses at some point except the winner. I don't think I've ever seen the winners (or runners up, for that matter) scraping dirt, so I'm not sure if they even officially get the chance to or if the organizers just think some lousy medal is enough of a souvenir.

Incidentally, some trivia: Sakushin has been to Koshien 12 times, and this is their 6th consecutive appearance. Hokkai has been to Koshien 37 times, the most out of any school in this year's tournament.

Last year Tokaidai Sagami won for the first time in 45 years. 3 years ago Maebashi Ikuei won for the first time ever.
Most schools don't win more than once.
That makes a more interesting tournament as it isn't obvious who is going to win.
