a hamburger steak is the meat part

>>
>>145838618
Baka has different meanings in English and Japanese. In Japanese, it's a more general word, while in English, it's only used by some communities. In most anime, baka should be translated to idiot. Only if the anime is about certain types of anime culture or internet culture, translating it as "baka" may be accurate. If the setting has nothing to do with these cultures, a different word should be used.

This practice has always bothered me. I'm not especially fond of 'anime' and 'manga', either.

They actually aren't, though.

Still that's not the point. The thing is, not because you hear something that sounds similar to a word that you know it'll mean that both words has the same meaning. Which is what's been stated already.

What do you mean?
Shouldn't words have different meanings?
Anyway, baka is a special case because it's literally only used by weeaboos and people doing it ironically. It's not the same thing as anime and manga, which has meaning in the general English speaking community.
I guess you could also have an anti-honorifics sub group, that would leave in -chan in an anime about a weeaboo community, because that's how they speak English. It'd be an accurate translation to the appropriate variety of English.

When it comes to "anime" and "manga", I guess it can be a bit tricky. The most accurate translation would be to translate it to "cartoon" and "comics". So you could do that with relatively few problems. However, perhaps the translator should look at the context. In most cases, the characters are most likely talking about Japanese cartoons and comics. And most English speakers are more likely to refer to those as anime and manga rather than cartoons and comics. So even though a direct translation may be more accurate, changing the words to mean "Japanese cartoon" and "Japanese" comic may be more in line with the general language useage of English speakers. The most literal translation would be "cartoon", but a liberal translator may argue in favor of "anime" instead, even if that's adding meaning that doesn't exist in the original.

There is possibly also the facor of setting. I remember Sailor Moon used to use the word "comics", which sounded fine. It was a casual setting without much focus on the anime industry. While in an anime about otaku culture, "manga" may be to prefer, even if it's less accurate. Because these kind of people would probably only be talking about Japanese comics realistically, and otaku would be more likely to say manga isn't comics.

So yeah, complicated.

It's almost as if you're completely unaware this is an actual word in Japanese and is used fairly regularly by native speakers.

As to the rest of your post, holy shit. Just holy shit.

Hamburger (hanbāgā) and Salisbury steak (hanbāgu) are made from ground beef, and regular steak (sutēki) is made from not-ground beef. You won't find many English speakers using just the word "steak" to refer to Salisbury steak absent other context.
>>

I do know Japanese though. I haven't taken N5 or anything but I know enough to know that loanwords for modern terms really do sound "bad".
There's not much that can be done about it short of extending/replacing 五十音 - and that obviously ain't ever gonna happen.

If there is but one person in the English anime world I would say I admire it would be Daiz in his prime. Most all the other cartel members were either narcissistic, incompetent, anal, idiotic, or otherwise intolerable human beings. But Daiz was different.

When Mangatraders went down, /a/ came together to save manga. And there at the forefront was Daiz, who devised the greatest manga naming scheme ever made in order to make everything perfectly neat and organized for the revival of manga and hopefully a move away from the awful "scanlation's blog site with DDL links" release format. No one listened but his ideas were fantastic ones. He was the hero /a/ deserved, but not the one it needed right then, etc.

He ran Underwater, who reliably always put out good releases in every facet. Their KLK release will always be remembered fondly; although some people disagreed with certain translation choices (wrongly, in my opinion) everyone can agree the typesetting was brilliant and the speed at which they often got episodes out before HS was fantastic - one of the last true full-out efforts of fansubbing.

But, of course, his most well-known feat is his most important one, his contribution to the video encoding world. Daiz discovered one cool trick to encoding anime - toasters hated him. But anyone with a decent PC loved it. No more eyecancer banding on gradients. By continually pushing the anime encoding world forward, the rest of the encoders slowly followed suit, and now widely-available quality is the norm instead of Xvid. Hell, without Daiz, widespread WebM support and 60fps on youtube probably wouldn't be a thing yet.

Nowadays he's basically just a relic of the past since fansubbing is dead now, only known as a meme passed around in a joke image. He has jokes made at his expense and is called "autistic" because he dares make a post longer than what's allowed on twitter. But that's because they don't know. They don't remember.

But I remember.

>>

Because the entire point of translating it is to translate it. There is no valid reason why someone watching a work translated to English should be expected to know non-English words like "vacance" or "frasco", and there is no specific significance that those words convey but a translated word can't.
