If you take away Mikleo Sorey keeps his significance in the story but he loses his ability to make independent decisions. He now becomes a character who does everything because he was told to. His reasoning for becoming Shepherd becomes because he was raised to be one not because he was using it as a means to achieve his own ends.

Sorey without Mikleo isn't a character, the opposite though isn't exactly true for Miikleo. Mikleo has personality, however his drive and goals revolve around Sorey. Take away Sorey and you've got a Mikleo or goals with no drive, but still a personality.

It should also be noted that Sorey is still the MC, he's still the character whose point of view the game follows, so of course it doesn't go off on a tangent and follow Mikleo when he separates from Sorey. Alternatively even though Mikleo wasn't in the party his presence was still there.
