Progressive is actually really good. It's essentially pretty much everything that fans wanted the original SAO to be.

Currently the LN has 4 volumes, these 4 volumes cover the first 5 floors. By comparison, in the original series ALL of SAO was 2 volumes.

Not to mention that the characters, even Kirito are all more fleshed out. I mean look at this page from Chapter 2 of the manga adaptation, Kirito has an actual personality (he's kind of a dick, honestly).

Progressive is pretty much Kawahara going back to his roots and showing how much he's improved as an author since he first wrote SAO as a teenager. It's well worth a read as all the material in it is completely new and it looks at the world and characters from the Aincrad arc much more closely.

I'd honestly like to include most of it, even if I didn't like everything.
I would probably gloss over the "Zakkaria Sword Arts Tournament" in Volume 10, with just a couple scenes showing them participate, while completely skipping over the minor drama sub-plot.

Much of the Academy arc will probably also be compressed, with a lot of unneeded scenes being removed, because of how boring they are. Kawahara writes nice SoL, but people usually don't expect that in SAO, which is seen as an action series.

I would probably adapt the library scene as a huge flashback, with just a few cuts to Kirito and Cardinal talking, so that the exposition dump is at least entertaining to watch. Probably obvious, but the less of them shown, the better—at least make the cuts to them visually appealing by having them walk in big circles around each other for no reason. Maybe put more focus on the battle scene between Cardinal and Administrator at that time.

The twins make a reappearance, and they sort of show the state of the Church, so I don't really mind keeping them around. Just shorten the stair-climbing scene to introduce Fanatio quickly.

Everything afterwards I feel would just choose to be a straight adaptation with the usual differences that come with a change in medium.

Yes, in the LN, but the anime actually made it pretty good. You got to hear less of Asuna angsting over her first world problems and saw more of Triple Yuuki being cute as a button. The animation was great, too, and in some places were even animated in 1's. It was arguably the best arc of the two seasons of anime.

The AW part is from Vol 20 I think, I'm a few vols behind so I don't know exactly what it but it looks like an icon for an executable or an Enhanced Armament.
