I'm really sorry for asking this but I'd really appreciate the help. I don't get the grammar going on here. He's saying that lancer's a nice guy and that this is over his budget I think but I don't get how to read it. 手頃なやつでひとつ, I don't get how the で works here.

>>
>>145352983
It's relevant, Anon should know that grammar doesn't need to be correct in everything he encounters.
Look at how often English native speakers make mistakes.
Manga have plenty of mistakes here and there.
>>
>>145352858
>使用して
>You don't even need this.
I figured as much, but I was looking at the technical usage of "made [employing/using] X". Thanks for clarifying.

>LSDJを
>で
Without the 使用して, that is what I would've used.

>GBで
>に
Are you sure that it would not also be で? The distinction drawn here is that it was composed on three hardware gameboys, as opposed to some sort of emulation. に usually carries a meaning of a physical place, while the "3つのGB" is more an emphasis of the method.

I wish I knew. 75-80% retention with 60% on mature cards. Getting 200-250 daily reviews with only 10 new cards per day.
>>
>>145359291
The default is usually fine, but adding an extra step will help retention. Just sessions take a bit longer.
Personally I added 5 and kept 10, and I did the same thing for failed cards.

Also, this may not be applicable to you, but I did find letting shit slide because you don't feel like failing it will just make you fail more cards as well. Don't be afraid to fail a card. Even if feel like you'd know it if it came up again, fail it. That helped my retention a lot.

Do sentence on the front instead. This is how you encounter words in the wild unless you're taking a vocab test.

>bbbut I'll just be memorizing the sentence
Not really unless you're an autistic savant or if you only have a couple hundred cards.
All Anki is good for is planting a seed in your memory bank that you can attach things to when you encounter them over and over again while reading native material.
>>
>>145359164
>>145359339

You guys need to realize that anki is a horrible way to learn Kanji. Especially if you're just grinding with core 2k/6k.

If you want to learn Kanji you need to devote time to only learning Kanji. Create a Kanji deck. Read RTK and figure out mnemonics to help you retain.

Alternatively, read more and anki less. If you consistently read every day you'll pick up on all the common kanji/vocab. You need to make sure you look up every word you don't know and that you fully understand each sentence you read. It's annoying and takes time but it's the best way to raise your comprehension.

Don't fuck with making a mining deck until you've been reading consistently for awhile so you can tell which words are common and which are uncommon. Mine only the uncommon words.

>>
>>145359844
Its pretty easy to unintentionally memorize sentences. Its a detrimental crutch.
>>
>>145360104
In my personal experience I rarely come across a word while reading that I don't recognize despite it being a word in my anki deck -- I'm only 4100 sentence cards deep though and a lot of my cards are common words that have no business being cards.
>>
>>145359863
Mnemonics are pretty great for bulk studying kanji.

Once you've recalled the mnemonic 3 to 4 times, your brain will have formed a connection between the visual stimulus and the end result and by that time the mnemonic is not even needed anymore and will begin to fade away.
>>
>>145359863
Anki is a good way to learn kanji because spaced retrieval practice is a good way to learn and doesn't preclude other methods. You don't have to understand everything you read 100% in order to learn.
>>
>>145360637
This is only true if you have something to back up. If you're just looking at the Kanji and then trying to memorize a reading you're honestly just wasting your time. Yes, you'll remember some Kanji doing this but even writing down Kanji 50 times each day would be more effective.

You need to form links in your mind to remember the Kanji. Mnemonic's are the forceful way to make a link and reading is the more natural way.

I advocate reading more just because it also will help you with comprehension as an added bonus. Plus I find creating mnemonics to be annoying.

I've been using Anki to learn Kanji and vocab, and I've personally found it to be a good way to learn. I add 20 words a day, and for every new word I encounter, I write it down in my notebook. That way, I can look up any word I've covered. I also use H-doujins as reading practice, so I do get to see the Kanji used in context as well. If I encounter a word I've covered but forgotten, I look in my notebook.

I thought が, ぎ, ぐ, げ, and ご were all pronounced with a "g" sound like in gorilla, but some of the voice recordings in the core 2k deck don't really sound like that. They sound more like a back of the throat "n" sound like in "sing". Is that how it should be pronounced or is it like a dialect?

You can do the whole mnemonic dance and song with kanji you see in core/mining deck just fine, RTK or an isolated kanji decks are completely redundant and keywords in English are a hindrance.

>>145361170
Writing a kanji 50 times would take like 3 times longer than just failing that card 50 times in anki,
and I don't believe anyone in this thread actually failed his worst of leeches this many times.
All it does is increasing the amount of time you look at the kanji, reading would be a better time investment.
Write it once if you feel it's helping.

>>
How do you reset a deck?
>>
>>145370776
I did my core while doing my mining deck, I just couldn't leave it incomplete.
>>
So I followed DJT's advice and downloaded Anki, but I'm not studying with it. Instead I'm using the example sentences to mine for new words. Has anyone else tried this? DJT always says to read more, so it seems like a good idea, and will let me avoid all the words everyone says you don't need to know anyways.
>>
>>145370999
Fresh starts are a bad mindset to have. It implies you're seeking for everything to be perfect 'this time', which it realistically won't be. Like people who wait until January 1st to start doing something. Instead of resetting a deck just go through what you did even if you forget a lot.

I've been reading Tonakoi two hours a day for the past week and a half and finally made it onto Nagisa's route. I started it after dropping Hanahira halfway through once it became too easy, and it turns out that it's actually pretty good. The characters interactions and comedy are fairly enjoyable, especially when it comes to Rina. My only complaints so far are that it's low on CG's and the background music is a bit too repetitive (which makes sense since this is apparently a low-budget title). In regards to comprehension, it's not that much harder than Hanahira except when it comes to the grandmother (old people speak) and Katsuhiko (really course and slangy).

I'm underselling myself. I recced it way back because someone said they wanted a VN that wasn't otakubait, so I looked for other VNs made by the same people as flyable heart and it was there. I assumed it was going to be hard based on the summary so I recommended it for shits and giggles.

Then someone made picture related and I instantly decided that I should force the idea that it's really easy as often as I can without making it incredibly obvious. About half of the "I just started reading this and wow it's so easy" posts you've seen for the past several months have actually been me. I assumed the others were fellow trolls the entire time.

retention of young cards affects how quickly cards become mature

in other words it's how much you're actually learning

that's why someone bothered to make true retention, the correct% rate has almost nothing to do with how well you're actually learning but people were treating it like it does
>>
>>145378554

Right, that was what I was aiming for. Seeing the same card 5 times within 20 minutes might not do much, but seeing a card multiple times a day with a few hour intervals works wonders for my retention.

I don't really know what you're getting at. Different people are good at different things, and I would hardly equate being smart with being able to memorize words. It's near guaranteed I'm a whole fucking lot better at math than you are despite the fact I suck at vocab.

>>I don't really know what you're getting at. Different people are good at different things, and I would hardly equate being smart with being able to memorize words. It's near guaranteed I'm a whole fucking lot better at math than you are despite the fact I suck at vocab.
Get a load of this guy bragging that he can do things with a calculator that have zero relevance to anything!

I'm not saying I'm smart for having a 90%+ retention rate. I'm saying you're fucking dumb as shit if you can't manage rote memorisation through SRS.

>>145378805
All you're really doing is wasting a minute every time you do it. The vast majority of cards I don't recognise, I can recollect just fine in 10 minutes, and then a day, etc. The additional minute step doesn't do anything but make you less efficient, because now you have to look at a new card 3 times instead of twice.
>>
>>145378805
anki's default settings are designed assuming you're not one of those mouthbreathing retards that doesn't realize the learning queue isn't a review queue and hits "again" on shit they literally cannot know yet

the only time you should hit "again" on a brand new card is if you *thought* you knew it, but got it wrong

if you literally know the card already you hit easy
>>
>>145378754
>I don't really know what you're getting at. Different people are good at different things

This, a lot of people can't deal with how monotonous anki is, which results in bad performance no matter what their abilities with the actual language might be

Read the kanji in reverse order when reviewing words to force yourself to pay attention to the pronunciation.

For example, say you were reviewing the word 今週

週-しゅう, 今-こん
This seriously improves retention of pronunciation in my experience.

Japan has a lot of bikers but it has no biking infrastructure in most places. Bikers hitting people on sidewalks is less common and less dangerous than card hitting bikes on the road where the biking lanes are breakdown lanes, so they just do it. A lot of drivers intentionally endanger bicyclists because they think it's not that dangerous and want to annoy the bicycler for taking up roadspace.

If you don't have a clear-cut goal, lower it for now until you feel you've got the time.

Just remember the following:
20 words a day means Core6k under a year and Core10k under 1,5 years.
10 words a day means Core6k in 1y8m and Core10k in 3 years.

This just reminds me to lower new cards from 22 to 20 again, I was paying my debt from a skipped day and I don't want to go over 200 reviews a day (reviews tend to be about 10 times larger than your new cards amount).

I've seen some polyglots speaking about how their personality change when they change languages, for instance being more blunt in German, happier in Italian, more laidback and smooth in French...

What is DJT's opinion on that?

I am just good ol' me on the three languages I speak, and I am almost sure my primitive Japanese is also not imbued with any personality shift whatsoever.
Of course there are always vocabulary choices and respectful speech in Japanese, but my intonation or "aura" doesn't feel affected by it.

Anons, could you please provide some general feedback? I've put together a template for the page layout I'm looking to use to recreate a functioning replacement of the old dojg grammar site that was once linked on the front page.

These are two examples, one with formation tables and the other concept that doesn't have any. The 戻る link will eventually return the user to a main page for the volume but it's just a place holder at the moment.

How is the layout? Anything I overlooked or could improve? I threw them up with a free hosting provider for testing.

I remember the general layout you used and it kind of inspired the design I used for the template. With what I've set up, it takes a couple of minutes max to take an entry from the dojg anki deck and have it up as a page like those two posted. The only issue is that almost all of the concept notes remain to be converted. I finished cleaning up the formation tables from the deck the other day before throwing this template together and looks like I'll be tackling the note image conversions as well.

Since the content is very light and simple, and entirely self contained, I'd like to once it's all done, either put it all in a simple package for anons to be able to download and use themselves entirely offline, either as a locally stored folder with the pages so it will work the same as the online version, or some sort of app/ebook. The issue with the later is the lack of ability to use rikaisama.

My main theory is people tend to imitate each other in order to "fit in", even on a subconscious level.
So not only you retain their grammar and accent, but also the personality of the people you most absorbed the language from. Most people I know speak English like thugs and full of unnecessary slang/cussing because they've learned it from nigger music or TV series.

I am pretty introverted and accent-neutral (given proportions) in my own language, so maybe I'm immune to it.
Or maybe polyglots are just retards giving advice and are, unbeknownst to themselves, still on that phase where you imitate other people in order to learn from exaggeration of their patterns.

It's just html so there's no huge filesizes to worry about.

My problem was cross referencing with tae kim and imabi to find the best reference sentences just took too long.

Well there are the concept note images, which are like 100mb or something. Aside from them being unsearchable and un-rikaiable, their sheer size is a problem. It will probably take me a few months to convert them all to how those two concept note sections appear in those two linked pages.

That effort could easily be crowdsourced.

You could put up a Google spreadsheet with the notes images on one column, make it so that everyone can edit it and have anons transcribe the content on another column.
>>
>>145385336
If you have massive problems with core, maybe. Most people with a normal IQ don't though. The only good use radicals have is looking up kanji you don't know on pictures that you can't copy & paste.

We tried that in the past. DJT isn't very good at the whole "group" thing -not just DJT, though, more language learning communities in general. There is still to this day a page linked on the main page in relation to the dojg deck typographical situation, which has been ignored since the end of last year.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1QNAucfhVViWzIQgPwRvFFsb0dUlfhenhG8ie7-6dwE0/pubhtml?widget=true&headers=false&chrome=false
A few days ago I read someone saying there was a whole bunch of typos in that deck and it was unreliable in that respect but you nothing posted about it on the page specifically set up for that.

There was also a spreadsheet set up specifically for the note conversion, with links to the folder of images and converted text files, but no one used it. I don't expect anyone else to do anything but I suppose I'll set up a google spreadsheet for it.

Other: I studied Grade 1 kanji on a kids' book during years (because I would always stop and get back to it, forgetting everything), so they were pretty tattooed in my brain when I started Anki. So it's like I have a semi-training in radicals, and it was enough for me to survive Core6k.

I'd say studying stroke order is the only important factor, you will eventually notice radicals on your own. But if you can study stroke orders through Grade 1 kanjis, I'd say you'd kill two rabbits with a single brush stroke.
