It felt much more character driven, while EoE felt more plot driven and Anno trying to push a message down our throats.

Not gonna lie though, that live action segment is probably my favorite part of NGE as a whole.

What's open to interpretation is the meaning of some of the scenes and the mythos of NGE's universe

I just found it unsubtle. It's fine to use verbal exposition and I think it works well in particular during points of dramatic intensity. But in EoTV it dominates the whole narrative.
