So next week's episode (and the rest of the season) is all about how he finds a new body for Yumemi so she can deliver her projections and narration and the new body is a high-end upgrade so that they can fall in love and get married and have cyborg babies and then build a rocket to fly to outer space where there is a thriving human civilization just waiting for someone to tell them about the stars...

Right?

They actually didn't and played much more hopeful music. That was probably my biggest issue with this anime as a whole, the different music just didn't capture the same grim feel as the VN finale.
>>
Just watched it. Decent adaptation as the rest has been, but the music could've been better and they should've just blacked out the screen on the moment of impact. Can't complain though. The flittering of her eyes in and out destroyed me, and the tears of rain was a great touch. Unlike my original playthrough where I was sobbing uncontrollably from start to finish, this version only got me during the part where the junker is describing the world beyond the wall. That's to be expected though when you know what happens.

Nice aftercredits, too. Looking forward to the movie.

also looking forward to the live reactions of the anime-onlys. their tears will fuel my endless hunger

Aye, the machine gun slowly racing up to Yumemi and it actually hitting her doesn't have that much impact or feel powerful enough, a black screen would've been better.

I honestly didn't feel anything this episode, the way she acts and talks is too robotic for me so I never really considered the "a robot who's so advanced and natural you can't really tell it apart from a real person" trope didn't really work for me. In general for the whole run I only wondered why the guy cared so much about this toaster girl.

I still liked it don't get me wrong, but it lacked a certain impact for me.

The emotion wasn't in her "death" but rather in how much joy the Junker brought her by visiting the planetarium. Had the Junker not visited then Yumemi would have continued to think that she was broken with some unknown bug with humanity abandoning her and having no-one else to serve. She would have stood out in the rain inviting people in to the planetarium and then the power would have run out and she'd no longer activate again. That would have been much more cruel for Yumemi.

But then there would be no story to pull on your heartstrings. Exactly! I'm sorry, but to me stupidity is not entertaining. Maybe you're different.

Dub cast was revealed, and it's coming out today.

>Episode 1 debuts on Thursday, August 4 at 12:30PM ET

>Synopsis: For thirty years, companion robot Hoshino Yumemi has patiently waited to show someone the stars. Left in an abandoned planetarium, she sits hoping for customers that will never show. That is, until a Junker—a plunderer of goods and artifacts from the ruins of civilization—stumbles upon the crumbling establishment. Will he help her repair the planetarium, or will she be alone once more?

>Director: Clifford Chapin

>Junker: David Matranga

>Yumemi: Jill Harris

>Manager: Christopher Bevins

>Mikashima: Cris George

>Satomi: Colleen Clinkenbeard

>Older Junker: Kent Williams

>>
>>145179006
Where is this from? It would've been the Junker that would've died if Yumemi hadn't distracted the crab. The fact that the Junker survived with Yumemi's memory is actually quite a hopeful ending compared to what could've happened.

>Although you say that the countdown sequence lasted much longer in real time but she says that she has about 600 seconds left at 7:22 (442 seconds) in the episode and her power goes out at 18:12 (1092 seconds), making that 650 seconds. So as long as my maths is correct that is about 600 seconds. The part where she said she had 150 seconds left was probably the bit you were unhappy with and you were right about that. At 13:00 (780 seconds) she says she has 150 seconds left, then if you do the maths it took 312 seconds until her power went out, which is definitely not about 150 seconds.

>This series tried to be emotionally manipulative (granted it didn't have enough time to actually develop the characters to the point where they didn't have to just go for pulling unearned tears out of viewers), but it just didn't work on me...at all.

>Every time Yumemi talked throughout this entire series, I was just bored. Nothing she said or did ever interested or surprised me. It was entirely predictable from beginning to end. I really disliked her monotone/robotic voice. I really disliked her loli-face and ancient character design. She has a 128 exobyte memory card, yet her personality isn't capable of real feelings. The only indication of an actual feeling I got from her was when she said she was lonely. But, that's it, and honestly I don't even know if she knows what that means.

>She never even cared at all for the main character beyond his position as a customer. Everything was about protecting the customer, protecting humans, or performing her duties. Never once did she care at all for him as an individual person. It's probably beyond her capacity as a robot to do so. This makes all of their emotional intensity miss the mark at the end of this show, for me.

>Specifically, in this episode, I felt her silent death scene to the spider robot was just a really bad cinematic choice. It was an extremely underwhelming death scene. Then follow that up with your typical "countdown sequence" that lasts much longer in real-time than they're saying it will on-screen.
>>
>I also don't really understand why the research team had to leave her behind in the first place? Was that ever actually explained? I mean, I can guess that either they weren't prioritizing evacuating non-humans from the city (though they barely seemed like they were in a hurry to get away), so I'd be inclined to believe instead that they felt they just didn't have the battery recharge machinery to sustain her before they got to a new place? BUT THEN AGAIN, why couldn't they just power her down and take her memory card from behind her ear and carry it with them, and put her into a new body? Seems pretty damn cruel to me to just leave her in that situation and not explain to her what was happening.

>But even with that cruelty, I don't really feel for her and her situation. She can't feel, so why should I feel for her? And I don't feel like I learned enough about the Junker to have any emotional sympathy for him either.

>I feel like this probably worked better as a game where you could just kick back and read a ton of text explaining all the backstory (if there actually was more backstory that they cut out of this).

Aye, agree. Though I also like that, despite being restricted by her programming, she's still capable of acting on her own and having some emotion; like lying about Junker's customer number or acting like everything is fine even though her programming point toward the world being broken.
>>
>>145188065
Yumemi is at that right in-between where nothing she says or does can't be attributed to some kind of pre-programmed course of action, but human enough that you wonder if maybe she really does feel emotions. I thought this aspect of hers was really well-done and appropriate considering the theme of the starry sky. The stars inspired people to dream and imagine of a world beyond them, and through this same type of belief we would like to imagine that Yumemi has a human soul and will be waiting for the Junker in Heaven.
>>

Noice.

It could've been made better with build-up of despair… or apathy… or any build-up. Original, as a whole, has constantly reminded of a background doom, and anime is much more lively.

Yeah. In the VN it really emphasized how specific and unlikely that first shot was going to be. There was so much suspense, and when it misfired it really put me on the edge of my seat. In the anime it all happens in about 3 minutes with no explanation of how specific the shot has to be.

>I have known adventures, seen places you people will never see, I've been Offworld and back...frontiers! I've stood on the back deck of a blinker bound for the Plutition Camps with sweat in my eyes watching the stars fight on the shoulder of Orion. I've felt wind in my hair, riding test boats off the black galaxies and seen an attack fleet burn like a match and disappear. I've seen it...felt it!

I can't really think any anime intelligent robot particularly more reasonable personality wise as Yumemi. You can't program the entire logic of the world, and it isn't feasible to evaluate the trillion of possibilities of the real world like chess AIs do in their restricted world, it really needs some machine learning capabilities to adapt to the world and learn how to deal with people, receiving new instructions and other complex tasks. And those robots would use mostly humans as training base so she ends up acting sort of but not quite human.

As a robot designed for dealing with store, a she can probably sample the number of customers and estimate the numbers the store will get in the future. With many years receiving zero customers, the natural conclusion would be that they'd never come anymore which conflicted with what she learned by herself, including all clients saying that they would come again soon and leading to her belief of being a little broken.

Since it's pretty much a copy of the human brain, there might even be psychological reasons to keep the physiological needs, not just for show. The only not human property I remember was perfect memory, which might either be a limitation of the model (lack of "garbage collection" equivalent) or an accessory external to the brain (like automatic recording through a separate processor).

I still remember that line like a decade later, and how hopeless that moment felt was the reason. He sticks around to hear her last words with the full knowledge that he's being surrounded while he's wasting time. Then he puts her memory card in his pocket and notes how warm it feels, drops his gun and says 'he won't need it where they're going', and then he just walks right into the enemy mechs.

Everyone who buys one of those bots suffers a lot when it's time to send them back to the factory, which is the main drama point of the show. Robots whose memories expire due to not being collected after the time limit hits may lose enough of their cognitive data to go berserk.

It could have been a scathing indictment of planned obsolescence, but they just use the setting to get letting go of a terminally ill loved one drama with attractive people.

>>
I'm torn. On one hand I'm glad that they actually made her act like a robot because I'm really sick and tired of the "basically a human" robots. On the other hand though, I couldn't care about her or feel anything at all when she died. I'd rather a robot act like a robot than act like a real human just to get sentimentality points though.
>>
>>145225441
Maybe that was the point? They went hard on the sentimentality part, but not really on the loss.

If you felt the same way about it if it were a human, why make her a robot after all?

I think that people who make these posts are missing something important in their lives.
>>
>>145223742
Yeah I just did. Since the BD is so cheap might as well add something so that the international shipping wont feel as painful.
>>
>>145225441
It was sadder for me because she was a robot. The thought of a human soul being trapped in pre-programmed algorithms and reactions and being unable to go against them hits me pretty hard. It makes me think that whenever Yumemi does something outside of her normal role, like making the junk bouquet, lying about the customer count, offering to escort the Junker to his car... it makes me think that she's trying to creatively express her emotions in the small ways she can defy her set programming.
>>
>>145225504
Because the ability to sympathize with things different to ourselves is what makes us human.
>>
>"It's just a robot, I won't cry"
>Cries anyway

Fuck man, this almost hit as hard as Kowarekake no Orgel. I got in expecting nothing, but then I recognized her color scheme last episode as that one image of the robot girl blown up. I didn't think this was the same robot.

>>
>Want to buy some planetarian goods

>>
>>145225637
Caring about a pet is different than caring about a robot though. A pet is a living organism that has a brain and can feel pain. Robots are more comparable to things or programs and I don't think most people care about things like that the same way they would for a human or animal.
>>
>>145225704
I guess for me it's just that I can't buy the idea of a human soul being in a robot or robots feeling true emotion.
>>
>>145225937
It's hard to find goods for this series, I could only found can badge in SEGA arcades.
>>
>>145225780
Almost as stupid as all the people who thought there was some kind of higher existence on the other side of the sky.
>>
>>145225210
Yumemi isn't just a simple robot, she is also a rare mirror of a lost civilization who looked at a clean sky and dreamed about a beautiful future, for someone who lives below a never ending toxic rain hunted by deadly monsters created by the worst side of the same civilization and without dreams besides maybe something nice to drink besides enough food to survive.
>>
>>145226015
Do you think autists aren't people either?
>>
So now that it's over, was it a good adaptation?

I'm interested to compare it to the other Key show this season, Rewrite. Which has some bizarrely fast pacing, but otherwise is a very interesting take on the story, and quite good so far.
>>
>>145225954
so if the robot was programmed to feel pain you would care? what kind of retarded logic is that

she can feel unhappiness and is at least a semi-capable AI. Her intelligence somewhere around a 5-6 year old child, hard not to bond with her.
>>
>>145225954
>A pet is a living organism that has a brain and can feel pain. Robots are more comparable to things or programs
So? Yumemi is far more cognitively aware than any animal. I'd argue that people would care MORE about a robot like Yumemi because they'd be able to bond more.
And humans are basically robots too. Our brains are just made up of a bunch of neurons. all our feelings like love, hate, joy, anger are all just a bunch of electric and chemical reactions inside our heads. how could you say that's any different than a program

>>

>>145225954
>I don't think most people care about things like that the same way they would for a human or animal
You're saying that in a forum where people care more about drawings than most people or animals. You would need to be very cold hearted to not care about something who looks mostly human (beyond uncanny valley) and constantly helps you, entertains you and when eventually broken can't be replaced without it being a completely different one who have no memories of you and so acts very differently.

>>145226015
>I can't buy the idea of a human soul being in a robot
No such thing as a soul though, although if there is I guess robots wouldn't have one. The question would be if something that acts the same way as something with a "soul" would be different in the perspective of someone who can't even prove that it exists or not.
>>
>>145226415
>without it being a completely different one who have no memories of you and so acts very differently.
Speaking of this, what would happen if Junker insert Yumemi's memory chip into a different robot? Would that robot just inherit Yumemi's memory or would it become Yumemi in a new body.
>>
If we build something like Yumemi, we wouldn't need to worry about skynet.
>>
>>145226458
I believe both, she mentions that all her memories are stored in the chip, and how the Junker will be able to let her continue talking about the stars if she finds her a new body.

Your personality is a product of your memories and experiences. (and hormones, but we can ignore that for robots)

I suppose, but I kinda expected that robot would come with pre-programmed personality then develop from there - though I guess that would be change with new memories aswell.
