In the sense that OP or the rest of the people in the thread were discussing it, "tragedy" has zero to do with hubris.

And personally, while I agree that Sayaka is a tragic character and her story does in fact contain that element of hubris (most likely because her story is based on The Little Mermaid), she is still a less tragic character than Kyouko or even Mami, the latter of whom was not responsible for losing her parents (and Kyouko's case is more complicated).

I think it would be fair to say that if you only focus on Sayaka in the main timeline of the series, it's fair to say that she's the second most tragic character in the show. Her acute descent into madness and the complete dismantling of her ideals amidst her struggle were the main point of tragedy. Furthermore, she ended up as a witch, a destructive embodiment of despair.

Kyoko, while being responsible for her family's demise, is certainly tragic, but her headstrong nature kept her going as a more villainous sort, until she chose to die alongside Sakaya being unable to save her.

Despite Mami's guilt over not saving her parents, she had it best in that she was able to keep herself alive for a number of years, and that she died before she learned the truth. Furthermore, dying immediately and suddenly after her fear of loneliness is alleviated seems more ironic than tragic.

It's not just the thing with Hitomi. It was just the straw that broke the camel's back. Her entire worldview was dismantled by her experience as a magical girl. Her failure to live up to Mami, her conflict with Kyoko, and the truth about soul gems etc.
