Higurashi did a somewhat good job desu

God damn did it have some shitty pacing close to the end. I wish it had more of an epilogue after 50 episodes, and I miss the days when there were actually a lot of 50 episode animu. Overall I did enjoy it. It's been maybe 8 years since I've watched so I might rewatch it again to see if it is just my nostalgia goggles.

Nah, horror can work in movies. The thing is a good example of horror done right where it isn't focused on jumpscares and more on atmosphere and suspense with big payoffs

war flashbacks, bloody fight scenes, a really good plot that had to be put into 50 episodes, and a cute girl with a sword.

I have tried watching "/a/ approved" comedy anime like nichijou and Detroit metal city and it's all just not funny. All the humor plays out the same, it's all slapstick and overplayed, Louis CK is miles better

I don't know if anime can disturb me like a good horror movie can, but then again I can only think of 2 horror movies that legitimately "bothered" me. And because of that I don't necessarily think it's fair to hold anime to a standard that most live action movies can't even achieve.

"Another" for example nailed the fucking atmosphere. Granted it's still an anime & by default your brain knows it's fake, but I still remember feeling something when I watched the first few episodes.

I hated "Muv-Luv Alternative", but I still think the first few episodes really, REALLY set the atmosphere. IMO you really felt like humanity was fucked.

I don't think an anime will keep me up at night like when I first watched "The Exorcist", but if an anime can make me feel at least some of the emotions that a live action horror movie can, isn't that worth something?

Fucking this. I didn't know much about Muv Luv going into it because I don't keep up with VNs. But yes those first three episodes build a great atmosphere. It's too bad it abandoned that feeling, and when more Top Gun afterwards.
