That's no different than before. Lina can stay away from trouble all she wants, she will always get pulled into shit because the plot demands it. 90% of the time when an arc starts she's just doing shit like normal and then the stars align to magically have everything coincide with her appearance.

Which is why the ending is so stupid. Her retiring by the consistent pattern of the novels would merely indicate shit gets started at home next putting her parents in danger and enraging her sister, so then the novels end that is how Lina gets what she wants. It's like a meta-snarky ending of a D&D parody where "Okay I'm fed up with these stupid campaignst, I go back home and till the farm THE END" and the player just up and leaves. There's no epilogue or no nothing, and just like a shitty D&D campaign the world revolves around Lina but never imposes on her more than relevant to the campaign itself.

Having Xellos do it intentionally doesn't really mean much once you realize that and it's not like his schemes ever even brought lasting emotional damage to Lina instead of the other way around. The hardest hit ever was Luke's arc and that had barely anything if anything to do with Xellos/Hellmaster/etc.

I'm on episode 14 of Slayers. I've been watching it on the background, but I haven't really gotten into it yet. There are some decent funny moments, and Amelia is cute, but I don't get the acclaim that it gets. Does NEXT somehow get a lot better?

Not really. I liked how the first 2/3rds focuses on a lot of tighter arcs, but the last 3rd kind of turns into a crazy shounen battle show, and Try keeps that up without the same structure and pacing. There still are funny moments, but S1 is considered the height of the TV series. The OVAs are better IMO, even if the cast is largely different and they don't go into worldbuilding.

If I want to watch this series only for Xellos what seasons/movies do I need to watch?

If you remember in the novels, Zel was totally ok with letting Rezo gut her like a fish in order to keep the Philosopher's stone, and tries to convince Gourry that he's bluffing.

A lot of the characters had their own flaws and characterizations that didn't come up as much in the series, like there's one point where Amelia drops the justice act for like five seconds and says she wishes her family would stop killing each other. Though Zel/Amelia was one of the better things to come out of the Anime.
