i haven't actually read part 8 yet, does it actually have fights? from what i gather and what people keep telling me, it's a lot more storytelling-centric and slice of life-y with a few fights in between (ala Part 4 obviously), but I don't think I've had a single soul tell me about an actual fight in the series.

I can't say this with complete certainty because it's not done yet, but it feels like the most well thought out and most well executed story in JoJo so far. There are certain things and it's not clear whether they will come uo again or not but on numerous occasions there are small details mentioned, and typically you would expect Araki to forget these small things, yet they come up again 10-15 chapters later, making he story much more engaging and interesting. It's very creative as you would expect from any JoJo part and the mystery is genuinely intriguing.

I actually re-read JJL recently, and while on my first time through I enjoyed it plenty, I enjoyed it even more the second time through and I think it has many moments, especially the previous arc, that rival the best moments in SBR from a storytelling and action standpoint. It has plenty of lighthearted comedy, great fights and some very touching emotional moments mixed in too. I think those emotional moments in particular may remind you of the more mature direction SBR took. I wouldn't go so far as to say it's the best part, but I think it has a very realistic chance of becoming the best part.

He clearly cares for his family, and even if Joshuu is a bit of an autist and Hato's an idiot, Hato is still succesful enough that she was in the front cover if a magazine and Joshuu is smarter than you'd think, and Norisuke does try to get him to get a job. The only fucked up one is Joubin, and right now it's not clear what it is that lead him to be the way he is, so we can't really say it's Norisuke's fault. It's also worth keeping in mind that he had to raise Daiya, Joshuu and Hato all by himself seeing as Kaato was gone.

I think it was a mistake to fully answer the question of who is Jousuke without clarifying where the plot has left to go. There's some spooky stuff left over with the rock people, but it's not really clear where we're going with any of it and it leaves me feeling like it's in a bit of a lurch. I think this next arc looks fun, but I would appreciate it more if it were built on the foundation of an obvious plot, the same way the fights in Part 4 feel more fun once we really understand what's going on with Kira.

I'm not saying there aren't plot threads to follow. It's more an issue of tension. The reason people always seem to be pushing so hard to know the identity of the big bad is because once Araki settles on that, Jojo parts always seem to do a great job of maintaining that tension. Part of the reason Part 7 is so good is that it flows seamlessly from the excitement of the cross-country race to setting up Valentine as a serious villain. Compare that to Part 4, which feels really choppy, because it keeps setting up and knocking down villains, and takes half the manga before it settles into its groove.

Anyway, Damo is the Akira to part 8's part 4-2. It seems like things are wrapped up neatly, but the seeds of continuation are already planted. We're gonna get some goof arcs (like in invisible baby, looking like miracle man is fulfilling this role), meet the last "main" characters (expecting mangaka rock person to show up soon and take up the mantle, there's no way "beware mangaka who make long hiatuses" was an off example of rockmen blending in), and then the big bad will become active.

Part 8 is part 4 with a tighter game plan beforehand.
