See, I don't think it's the ambition per se that made him willing to sacrifice the Band of the Hawk.

That's exactly what he was thinking. That was the point of the young boy that dreamed about becoming a knight. The boy died for Griffith and lost everything he might have ever been or wanted to be because of it. Then consider all of the other people that died fighting for Griffith as well. Griffith thought it would've been ridiculous to have all of those lives been in vain.

Of course, that is failing to consider that by taking such an action you become a person that many of those that were fighting and dying for you would not have been fighting and dying for you.

Thanks to the critical error of Guts showing up at the very wrong place at the very wrong time, just after Ubik showed Griffith that whole sequence, Griffith then immediately blamed Guts for everything. He did a little bit before, like how he attempted to strangle Guts, then tried to rape Casca the first time, but obviously nothing was going to happen.

As he could finally do something, that was just an act of vengeance as Griffith blamed Guts for everything in that critical moment. In his mind, Guts took away what Griffith's dream was, so he wanted to take what Guts cared for. Because even still, he never viewed Casca like he did Guts.
