I'm glad Anno is finally working on something that he can dork out over instead of just making Eva sequels for cash even though everything he had to say through Eva he's already said.

That said: I dunno how I feel about using men in suits in a Godzilla movie with a serious tone in 2016. It's possible for men-in-suits kaiju tokusatsu stuff to be cool and fun, but I dunno if you can make it genuinely scary.

That said if it's not meant to be outright scary then it should be fine. Even in that case though I expect it to do horribly with critics in the west because because not even the best western film critics understand this sort of thing. They assume that anything that's not (by their own misunderstanding of the appeal of kaiju films) "so-bad-it's good" is inherently bad. The west is far more obsessed with realism and "the illusion of life" so they can't understand why one could find men-in-suits action unironically enjoyable and cool because it's not realistic.

The west always wanted to emulate reality while Japan embraced stylization and not mattering if the viewer knows they're looking at a drawing if the drawing is inventive and appealing and interesting to look at.

Takashi Murakami might be pretentious about some things but he's right that Kanada-style animation in modern anime feels like a natural evolution of the style found in old Japanese art liek Hokusai paintings. Mainstream "omgsoepic" American feature animation would never animate something like Kanada's legendary fire dragon in Harmagedon because it's too open about being a series of drawings. Since Disney's "rules" were set, high-budget western animation has had the same "imitate life" ideals as old western art.

Bojack Horseman is probably one of the best Western animated shows in years, Venture Bros.' latest season was one of the best, and Rick and Morty despite the meme following it's accrued is really good.

For plot reasons. Why can't he be stopped or killed? Because the plot calls for it. In a 1v1 showdown with no plot armour or restraints on either side, I fail to see how an Eva could fail.

2014's Godzilla wasn't Japanese and it was a test gauge to see how the world would react. The main thing is Japan's domestically produced own Godzilla films from Toho. Toho put the franchise on hiatus after 2004's Final Wars to give it time not to over-saturate the appeal or the market.

The effects team knew the eye on Godzilla was broken but didn't have time to fix it. That whole movie Godzilla is cross eyed like a cat.
But as a whole it doesn't really take much away from Return of Godzilla. Godzilla is just an animal. A big crosseyed nuclear animal. He's also wrecking shit and nobody questions how he looks.
In the sequels he looks progressively better. It's almost like watching Godzilla transition from a mindless animal to a protective father until the end.

That's more of Showa then Heisei. Showa Godzilla after the first film was more or less Godzilla's goofy hijinks and adventures fighting various alien invaders, ancient threats, and monsters from other worlds and what not. Heisei Godzilla is when the series goes back to its darker and bleaker roots where Godzilla is more of an anti-hero then anything at best.

Seeing Godzilla Jr get killed by Destroyah still hearts as well as how Godzilla finally dies at the end of the movie while sacrificing his life to revive his son.
