I think it's a pretty nice twist on the typical trope of the MC winning by drawing upon sheer will, or the power of friendship/love. Here, the other characters are the primary damage dealers, but Subaru provides an invaluable role in information gathering due to his ability to return. Pretty neat stuff imo and a great way to side-step the usual/mundane tropes.

Re:zero seems to be going for a general theme of alienation. Subaru is alienated from his world after being transported, and alienated from his new friends due to his ability. Emilia is alienated from society due to her appearance. Ram and Rem are alienated from their home due to the destruction of the tribe, and emotionally distant due to the loss of Ram's horn. Felt feels distant from society since she's an urchin, but also feels set apart from the other slum-dwellers. Even fecking Roswaal is alienated from society due to his personal eccentricities.

I can only speak for myself but up until the last two episodes, when Subaru died, it was expected as it was the premise of the series and got an inaudible "oh shit" from me.
Notice that Subaru hasn't dies in what, 5 episodes straight now? So, practically 1/3 of the series so far and yet, for me, the events that went down and the fact that Subaru CAN come back but has to live with these horrifying memories all the more meaningful. What do you think?

It's funny watching the spectrum kids in these threads complain that they don't know what Emilia was all upset about. She is amazing and put up with so much shit from Subaru in multiple timelines. When she finally ends it it makes sense in a very human way.

This. They are actually handling the infinite lives aspect pretty well. Mainly because Subaru doesn't actually have a choice as to were or when he has to come back. He's forced into an impossibly shitty situation time and time again and more often then not he can only watch as his loved ones are killed.
