Been seeing はよ used a lot on twitter, but interestingly enough, it's pronounced ワヨ.

I supposed it doesn't matter since it's as trivial as pronouncing lol as "lawl", but still interesting.
>>

that page says ワヨ is the wrong way to pronounce it.

Strange, I thought I was supposed to understand grammar naturally after finishing core 6k.

I thought it was pronounced ハヨ to begin with.

To the guy who made the third revision of the autoscroll HTML: thank you. I made the second revision but all I added was cosmetic stuff, you really made it nice and professional. The character and line counter in particular is brilliant. My only complaint would be that the default character brightness is way too dim.

>character speaks in a manner completely different from everyone else in the show
>translations sound exactly the same
why is this allowed?

I'm not looking for a perfect rendering of another language's dialect, but I feel like there should be at least something to indicate that
>ちいとききたいことがあるんやけど、かまへんかな
isn't how a normal character would say they want to ask you a question. Even though I'm still relying on subs for maybe half of the dialogue, picking up on things like this that I didn't pick up on at all the first time through as an EOP makes me glad I took up the quest of becoming a thousand-times-folded nihongo master.

>wanting regional dialects to be represented in english subs
why
any time a fansubber actually does make the effort to differentiate them for the sake of a joke in the show, it ends up fucking disgusting
like a half-assed attempt at a phonetic american southern accent

it's not like you have to learn japanese to be able to pick up on kansai-ben
especially if it's something super intense like yozuru's, you should notice her odd speech patterns long before you understand half the dialogue in monogatari
>>
>>143857834
regional dialects aren't the only kind of weird speech patterns

I'm kind of upset that none of the localizations of any version of FSN give credit to shirou's grammatical gymnastics during the story scenes he does them in

the only reason they come through in the typemoon TL at all is because the english in it is mildly bad, and in the typemoon translation the the english of translated grammatical gymnastics is less unnatural than the english of translated normal statements for some reason
>>
>>143857495
Best I've seen is Kansaiben to Aussie. Still not right at all but at least it's amusing.
>>
>>143857834
What do you think should be done for characters like the father in flying witch? His tsugaru-ben being borderline unintelligible was a running joke in the series, but it was translated as being just kind of mildly southern which ended up turning totally justified confused pauses into moments of seeming mental retardation

i don't know, i kinda doubt anybody actually watches one of those scenes and comes out thinking "whew, makoto sure is deaf"
doing the bare minimum to distinguish the dialect is all you have to do, and that only if there's a joke that wouldn't carry over otherwise

it's a given that there's going to be something lost in translation when you sub a japanese cartoon in english, so anyone with common sense should be able to figure out what's really going on if you give them a hint
what's really a barrier is involved jokes like this one that subbers end up not even bothering with

Something I don't get in this guys answer although i understand it.

https://hinative.com/en-US/questions/44386

What is the difference between 決める and 決定する and 決断する?

決める、決定するの意味はほぼ同じです。ただし、与える印象が違います。決めるが最も汎用的です。決定するは主に書き言葉として使われ、固い印象を与えます。決断するは、意思をもって決めることを表します。

例:
今日の夕飯を決める。
仕入先をA社に変更することを決定する。
彼女との結婚を決断する。

What does 「使われ、」mean? Is that like an abbreviation of the passive form to connect his sentence or something?

If you don't learn a native tongue during your childhood, you will forever be disabled when it comes to language. That's what the critical period hypothesis describes. The hypothesis is based on cases of children being isolated by their parents.

The hypothesis does not apply to learning second languages. It only applies to learning the first language. People who assume it applies to the second language never actually studied the hypothesis properly.

That's not enough, you have to be a tiny bit over 25% to be able to take it.
Dig into your family history and see if one of your non-Japanese grandfathers or great-grandfathers happened to stay in Japan as soldiers after WWII or perhaps as businessmen or sailors earlier on. If you can scrounge up at least one who spent a month there, you'd be about 25.01% Japanese by association, tipping the scales in your favor.

weeabo or wapanese used to convey the definition of singular focus on a particular topic to an unhealthy level, much like nerd or otaku. In this case it was all things japanese, and possibly some self-resentment at not being a native.

Rest assured, if you even breath near japanese media these days, weeb will you will be. Its lost all its original meaning and power.

What should I do? I feel like the only reason I'm learning vocab so easy is because I already know what the kanji means.

While learning vocab should I bother learning the Japanese pronunciation if I just want to learn Jap to read shit?

Like, sometimes stuff like 明後日 will show and I know it means "the day after tomorrow", but I forget it is pronounced あさって. Should I be clicking good, hard or again?

You'll find that 明後日 is also written in kana sometimes, so if you don't know the pronunciation you won't know what it means in those cases.

But there isn't. That WOULD make more sense, but in the context that the line is spoken in, it doesn't.

The line in the manga is "俺は火に近づきゃ寒くないし, it's just that in the anime it's spoken wrong.

Read. Write. Everyday.
You have to live the language to git gud at it; you don't become proficient in English if you don't read and write, so why would you treat Japanese any differently?
>>
>>143892262
No, get rid of the comma.
>俺は火に近づかなきゃ寒くない

There's no pause in there, it's all one sentence.
>>
>>143892608
That's kinda what I'm doing, but it's a very slow process, and Anki is going faster than I can keep up with. People make it seem like they easily learn 20 a day.
>>
>>143892663
...does that really matter that the Japanese text doesn't have a 点?
Also, Why did you drop the し at the end? Bad paste job?
>>
>>143892832
That's not what I'm even talking about here really.
The fact that he says 火に近づかなきゃ寒くない instead of 火に近づきゃ寒くない is what's bothering me, since the latter is the line in the manga and the former is the spoken line by the seiyuu.
>>
>>143892832
>...does that really matter that the Japanese text doesn't have a 点?
What I'm getting at is:
>I have to get close to the fire because it won't be cold.
Assuming that し is still there at the end.
Don't think, feel. (゚O゚)\(- -;

>>143892707
You have to spend at least an hour reading each day; ideally you want to read the same thing (like a manga chapter) over and over again until the kanji is drilled in. Keep notebooks next to you and write them down 50 times while reciting the pronunciation and keeping the meaning in mind. Do this every time you forget one.

You want to be reading things that have common kanji before branching into niche genres with useless kanji. Also, Anki is just a meme, I wouldn't bother using it unless you're in the third year of a Japanese degree and have now realised you don't actually know Japanese.

This is very good advice; in addition I would recommend frequently checking your reading against the English translations to ensure understanding, and the use of quality software such as Rosetta Stone to assist your studies.
>>
>>143893192
If you can't remember a symbol after writing it down 50 times you should just stop trying to learn Japanese desu. You're also deluded if you think your eroge kanji are useful outside of eroge.

So I feel like I'm kind of sort of cheating with my reading. While I'm starting to understand the sentence structure, I feel like I'm cheating by using the ITH to look up what the word means and I know how to connect it from the english meaning instead of the word. So when I look up the word the next time, it feels like I have forgotten it. How do I solve this problem?

In my mining deck, words are being added at the top of the "stack" if there's such a thing, instead of the bottom, so the cards I added last I see them first, so if I keep adding cards I will never see the ones I added first. How do I fix this? BTW I think that only happens to cards I added from mobile.

How many years ago did you create your collection? It sounds like your database is missing an index. Is it only just that deck? Is it AnkiMobile or AnkiDroid?

1 - Try doing a database check from the menu and then adding some new cards to test it.

2 - Try going to the deck's options -> New cards -> Order. Change it to random and then change it back to order added. Try adding new cards after that.

Dear Anons of the DJT

As you probably noticed, the guide has been tended to by someone else than myself in the past few months, who, as far as I can tell, has been doing a much better job in managing it than I ever have. I'm quite glad about this development, since I don't see myself sticking around for much longer.

Do thinks look the same to you as they do to me? I'd be glad to hear your opinions on the aforementioned, hence I'll ultimately leave this place in a few weeks, hopefully knowing the guide to be in good hands.

Happy learning

Not fluent, but I can watch all the anime I want to watch, and read all the manga I want to read. Amd I can hold a conversation halfway decently as long as the subject isn't something complex like politics and the like. And my overall interest in Japanese has been waning, I like to use it, but I can't be bothered to go on with active learning as it's being replaced by other interests.

And I'm currently as close to 幻想郷 as one will get in this life.

lowering new cards is the only good way to do it
there's also widening your intervals and/or increasing default ease, but then you'll just forget the new cards you get because you won't review them

Need some help with this sentence from the beginning of Fist of the North star, my google fu is lacking and I am a shitty noob.
>今じゃケツをふく紙にもなりゃしぬってのによ
I know he is saying something about it being used to wipe his ass, but the なりゃしぬって is what is throwing me off. I am really bad at understanding the rougher speaking forms that manga villains tend to speak in.

Hes done a few other things about foreigners from what I've watched. Somewhat funny but I could never get in to that one. Way too hard to read.

Why is coffee コーヒー ?
Surely it would make more sense for it to be コーフィー ??
>>

See the comments in http://sukebei.nyaa.se/?page=view&tid=46664 there's an explanation of the issue and a patch to fix it (a.pomf.se/kxetfu.EXE)

Note that the guy is trolling and if you are genuinely a beginner you should NOT be reading Eustia, start with something a little lighter and work your way up.

japanese dont really different between f and h just like with r and l
especially noticeable with old loanwords like coffee from back when they didnt give a single shit about how similar it sounds to the actual word
>>
>>143908990
Oddly enough, Japan seems to do really fine without guns. Maybe we should learn from them.

I've seen people translate this as 'true love', but using the possessive like that wouldn't it be love of truth or something

Acting as a possessive marker is one instance of a more general meaning that の has, which is perhaps more like categorization
