Is the "the 90s were the best, most innovative period for anime" meme true or not?
>>
The 90s were trash compared to the 80s.
>>
no

golden age of anime is k-on season 1 - winter 2014
>>
As with all art, it's a cycle. I honestly think we're in a bit of a lull right now after the great stuff we had at the beginning of the decade, but it'll pick back up in a couple of years.
>>
Arguably the most innovative, yes. Certainly not the best.
>>
>>143622975
I assume you're saying percentage-wise. The increase in raw numbers since then means we've definitely seen more innovation more recently.
>>
>>143623021
But has anyone actually done a chart that looked at original vs adaptations?
>>
>>143623085
I haven't done a chart, but I did the numbers at one point for a few years, and it's held pretty constant. Anime hasn't changed all that much, except that it's gotten bigger.
>>
Nah. Digital animation is the way to go
>>
The 90s were mostly a transition period from stories focusing mostly on action, sci-fi and mostly plot oriented stories, to a focus on characters internal worlds, their daily lives, thoughts and motivations.

The 90s also marked the shift from regular prime time on TV, to otaku prime time, and thus more focus into what otaku wants to see in stories.

The 80s were trash compared to the 70s.

.... geez. I wrote one of those.

>>143623290
Can we just preempt this whole train and praise cycled photos of jumping horses?

Can't we just appreciate good anime from every era?
>>
>>143623330
No. You're either a newfag, oldfag, or nostalgiafag. Pick a side and start complaining.
>>
>>143622528
There is no such meme.

> newfags honestly haven't heard about Japanese depression after bubble burst
>>
>>143622528

It must have been a very nice experience to buy anime on LaserDisc
>>
Everything was best when you were 12 years old.

The 90s were actually shit and had the worst artstyle of all time.
>>
>>143622556
First post speaks truth. Everything good from the 90s got started in the 80s.
>>
>>143622556
This. Also compared to the 70s.
>>
>>143627712
This.
>>
Pretty bullshit, the 80s and 70s were.
>>
>>143627867

70s had some good shit that simply hasn't aged too well but is still watchable and worth anyone's time. Looking at you, Rose of Versailles.
>>
early 90s were a great time for OVAs
>>
>>143627712
80s were perfection
>>
>>143622528
In terms of storytelling?
Yes.

In terms of artstyle?
See >>143627712
>>
>>143629149
Rose of Versailles is a masterpiece.
>>
>>143629319
This. 80s for ever.
>>
>>143629319
>>143629558
All 46 of them.
>>
I think it's simply "old" people preferring what got them into anime over what is currently popular.
There are amazing anime from every decade.

I have been noticing the same trend with myself recently and I hate it.
>>
>>143622528
It's massive nostalgia wank.

>>143622556
As is this.
>>
I liked when they adapted VNs en masse. At least those had complete stories hat could be told in one usually two seasons unlike most LNs and Manga.
>>
>>143627712
>90s
Because every show looked like saber marionette, right faggot?
>>
>>143622528
>>143622556
The 80s were the beginning of the OVA era, which expanded anime to a broader array of themes. The late 90s were when late-night anime started to become big.

I'd say the golden age was from the mid-80s until when Neon Genesis Evangelion aired.
>>
>>143634653
He's a cherrypicking faggot, of course they all did when he says it did.
