well i'll step in for a moment. Goku and his family are basically a parody of the typical, suburban Japanese family. In Japan the father is gone almost 16 hours a day, working to support his family, he rarely sees his kids, and on the one day off the husband/father has he usually sleeps or just does something for himself, so he barely knows anything about his kids or the finances of his own household, his wife handles all of it. The crazy thing is, this is how a Japanese family has operated for at least 5 decades now. Its actually a standard.

Is Goku a bad husband and father? yes he is. But its understandable. If you look at the history of Dragonball, Goku usually has to play catch up whenever a new big bad appears, generally his time to catch up costs millions if not billions of lives. This is why Goku is so obsessed with training. Because he no longer wants to have to play catch up whenever a new big bad appears. It actually makes sense.

Also Vegeta isn't much better, but Saiyan males in general aren't good fathers. Its part of their culture and its probably genetically ingrained by now.

Sometimes I wonder what direction the plot would have taken had Toriyama taken his editor's advice and hooked up Goku and Bulma. Bad husband topic aside this was utterly dumb the way it was written. Goku suppossedly choose to remain dead for everyone's safety which felt kind of justified at the moment because Cell happened due to a butthurt Red Ribbon Army scientist with a grudge on him. But Babidi/Majin Boo was entirely out of his control. They could've appeared with or without his presente, in fact, it could been disastrous if he wasn't there which makes the whole point of staying dead to loose all meaning.

That's what I love about Goku and Vegeta's families. On paper they look like trainwrecks, but it's the fact that they're so flawed that they work.
Chi-chi's nagging and quick temperedness reigns in Goku's lackadaisical and more neglectful characteristics, while Goku will still convince Chi-chi to let him do what he wants and she will always support him even though she worries. Gohan manages to juggle both being strong and being smart, traits he's learned from both parents and is legitimately happy.

Likewise, Someone as irresponsible as Bulma and as angry and destructive as Vegeta seem like they'd be awful parents. But Vegeta actually cares for his son and Bulma is an excelent provider for anything trunks would need (to the point that he's really spoiled). And Bulma and Vegeta bounce off of each other well because of Bulma's strange confidence she has talking back to people WAY stronger than her. And that gets her respect from Vegeta.

I would have rather there not be this lame attempt to explain character relationships in DBZ. It's this weird world where things like this just happen. I mean shit, he didn't see the rest of the gang after winning the tournament for FOUR YEARS. No one kept in touch, when he showed up with Gohan, they thought he just picked up some kid, not that it was his son. It's not like they couldn't find him and visit, or pick up a phone or something.
