Shows/books/watever are understood not because of the most simple interpretation of the plot, but understanding the themes.

Heck, you said you understood that Lain deals with so and so. And the things you listed (and that's not even all of them) are much more (in quantity and intrinsic quality) than the things you listed in NGE.
