Well, I've found it now. It's from an interview with the original work, series composition and script staff. And what it says, among many other things, is:

I'm really torn about it. It has this huge retinue of characters that you barely see, they barely spend time with any of them so its just 'that naginata girl' or 'that girl who looks at stuff and yells' and then there's the confusing ship battles.
The major conflict in the show was Mike crying and wanting no one to get hurt and them all backing her up which I found fairly dumb. But I can't say that it wasn't enjoyable.
