Compared to Zero's designs, the designs are pretty shit. The eyes are weird too, they're smaller and set back further into the face which only makes the noses of all the characters look bigger, especially the female ones.

Do you see the way the right eye behind Saber's nose is noticeable in this shot? As well as the small impression near the lips? That's missing from a lot of side-on shots of characters in UBW.

Tabata sucks copying his style though.

Sudou is the one that keeps closer to Takeuchi's style, check the Hollow Ataraxia openings or Sakura in the UBW anime.

Is it really bad? I enjoy tales games in general. Tales of Phantasia was amazing, Tales of Destiny was good, Tales of Eternia I never finished, but it wasn't terrible. Tales of Symphonia was OK. Tales of the Abyss was great except for Luke being a whiny bitch for half the game. I actually borrowed an xbox 360 from someone just to play Vesperia, and that wasn't bad either. Vesperia's problem is that it wanted to be several things at once. The first part of the game is pretty strong, and it seemed like it was going to be about a bunch of outlaws upsetting the government. Then it changed directions part of the way through the game and made it more about an ancient civilization that let the world get destroyed, then became some kind of generic typical tales plot about saving the environment, without really fleshing out the characters that much. I mean most tales games do the whole bait and switch plot thing, but there wasn't even really a big twist when it changed it's focus, it just kinda changed it's focus.

It really didn't help that it kept on forcing in a lot of drama that didn't go anywhere. Such as Yuri being stabbed in the back and falling one hundred feet, only for him to shrug it off and be pretty much fine the next cutscene.

You're right, the characters were lack luster, and while there were some good ideas here and there, the game ultimately went with the most terrible ones. Alisha is a character who ultimately didn't fit in the party, and her exit was an inevitability. But opening up the game more I feel that a problem with her is that she shouldn't have been the only guest character, it would have been great to get Sergei for a while.

With Alisha Baba's entire approach to the character was the problem, instead of making her there to highlight Sorey's weaknesses, they should have allowed her to be her own character. Ultimately pushing her off to be a character that helps you when you need shit.

The story tells you that everyone in Izuchi is Sorey and Mikleo's family, yet the game doens't really allow you to spend enough time with them for you to care. What the story should have done was at least give you some side quests that required you to go home sometimes and visit your grandfather. Therefore making Sorey and Mikleo more approachable and down to Earth as characters. Then after the grandfather dies, give you an animated cutscene of the characters reacting to his death, as well as some time for it to sink in. Maybe even include a skit or two of the characters comforting each other. Ditto for Muse, give Mikleo some time to react to her, hell you can even include a scene with Sorey comforting him. Dezel's character was a mess.

Even just having a scene of Sorey and Mikleo learning that their circumstances from which they were raised and born are weird and having some morbid interest in where they came from would have done a lot.

Zestiria's problem was that it thought that having a character being pure of heart meant that they didn't need to have earthly values or desires, and so tried to disconnect them from their world as much as possible, but that's never a good idea.

Do you care about the story and characters? Yes, all of them. No, Graces f, Xillia 2 and Hearts R. Those have the most appraised gameplay I've seen. I wouldn't recommend Zest on either accounts because Zaveid, Edna and Mikleo are the most interesting of the bunch while everyone else is "meh" in comparison. It's an incredibly poorly built game for modern times and would have likely been a better fit for early PS3 or late PS2. I hear the PC version is better optimized though.

The source material may not have been any good in the storytelling department, but aside from the flashbacks, the story in the anime was even worse. Laughably so. Even the fight scenes were horrible, which shocked me to no end, considering that while Ufotable isn't particularly good at choreographing and animating fights, they do know how to make them look at least superficially good.

The fights in the Symphonia OVA were alright. Short and not particularly AMV on youtube worthy, but alright.

Despite dropping the game, there weren't any events that could be considered major fights either. There was Zaveid, but all the other bosses seem like quick finishes story wise.

Only from a superficial point, as I already mentioned. The fights are not really animated most of the time, but utilize special effects, CGI, panning camera views and motion blur to make it seems like the fights are animated when they are actually mostly stills or simple movements masked by shiny flashes and bursts of light.

Ufotable staff are good at using their budget to make fights looks good and cinematic, but they're never particularly impressive from a technical standpoint. It's still a lot better than fights that are shit from both visual and technical perspectives, but not worth much praise.
