Need help getting a proper english of this, I'm not even sure I'm getting it correctly though:

let's say I'm so delusional that I actually think that I can learn japanese to a decent enough level that I can play the japanese version of Persona 5 before it comes out in the west (meaning that I might be decent enough to play it before february, not when it comes out in September).

Where the hell do you even begin? What do japanese games like Persona use as subtitles? Kanji, Katakana? I don't know shit

First you kill yourself to be reborn with better stats, because currently your character obviously sucks.

If you still want to keep it though, start studying the two alphabets (hiragana and katakana).
Once you've got both permanent into memory, move up to grammar.
It's relatively easy if you've got a nice INT stat.
After your grammar basics are solid, you get to read anything that interests you and with a dictionary you'll gradually get more vocab.

If you know absolutely nothing, if you study it well and don't give up at all I think you'll be ready to play Persona 9 before it comes to the west.

Do the core 2k and read a grammar guide like Tae Kim or Genki. Then play a Japanese copy of Persona 3/4. Make an Anki deck with words you see in the game that you don't recognize. After that, watch all the Persona 5 trailers and look at the press releases to see if you can find any vocabulary exclusive to that game (probably stuff about thieves). At least, that's what I would do.
>>
>>142606156
You could play it, today. The question is rather how much pain you're willing to go through playing it. If you have to waste too much time looking up words, phrases and grammar it might just ruin the experience.

But I'd say you could probably get to a reasonable enough level before next february, though you willhave to put in work.
>Where the hell do you even begin?

If you're not independent enough to get started on your own then you might as well not waste your time any further is my advice. You have a thread dedicated to learning Japanese with a guide in the very OP, and an image telling you to read it, yet you're incapable even of that. Do you think learning a language is smooth sailing once you get started?

no that is definitely the verb that is there

>wake up
>do reviews (~300/day at the moment)
>do new words (systematically learning all jouyou kanji through mined vocab, both kunyomi and onyomi)
>later in the evening, mine new words for the next day

I have been doing this for a couple months now. I probably just should have been reading instead, but I chose this method and I'm sticking with it until I finish all the jouyou kanji. I don't necessarily recommend people do it like I am but whatever. Only a few hundred to go. At least after this the only new kanji I will be encountering while reading will be jinmeiyou so it should go quite a bit faster.

Hiragana/Katakana flashcards (purely review right now)
Kanji flashcards (mostly to get recognition and stroke order down). I learn 5 new kanji/day.
Vocab flashcards taken from Genki.
Review using custom study if I feel like it.
That all takes about 20-30 minutes. Then I lurk here and on IRC for a few hours.

If you're stressed on time then just do reviews. It shouldn't take a lot of time unless you've got 100s of reviews. But if you absolutely won't be able to, then you'll probably forget a quite a bit depending on how well you've memorized them, but restarting shouldn't be too hard as you've learned them once already. I need help with something simple and stupid.

I read somewhere some time ago the expression to say "for the first time in one's life".

If I recall correctly, it was something like 生まれてはじめて
But I am confused as how to use it.
For example, if I intend to say I am happy for teh first time in my life, I came up with the following:

生まれてはじめて幸せです

But it feels wrong.
Can anyone help with this and provide a few examples?

Requesting help with a sentence:

> 俺の記憶ではクラスの中の下らへん目立たないような位置に居た
> (long descriptive text about her that I'm lazy to type) 彼女が

I'm uncertain about the subject in the first sentence, and about the -らへん form. Googling I found it to be "where, whereabouts", both in english and from a japanese post, but I'm not making much sense with it.

> 俺の記憶では
(in my memories)

> クラスの中の下らへん
(among the class' foolishness?)

> 目立たないような位置に居た
(there was <subject> doing as not to stand out)

Can I assume the subject is the talker, or, from the next sentence, 彼女?
Is there any tips on figuring this out easier? I feel I'm always too reliant on context and when there isn't one I feel sorta lost...

That's what I'm assuming, but I wasn't certain, thanks!

If you want more context, a guy meets a girl from a long time ago, and she's totally different, so he starts his inner dialogue with that "from my memories..." and after a description of her, he ends with "she looks like a completely different person (生物, which I found funny dunno why)"

I'm guessing the subject is "her", but I'm not entirely sure.
But from what you said that is one clause, I can't make sense of it. Could you provide the meaning of that?

"among my class' foolishness that didn't stand out"?

>>142618435

>>142619064
I'm the one who asked, but what I can say is... 下らない isn't a verb, らへん is a conjugation, which makes it grammatically inviable if you just think about it that way.

It's just one test which means it could vary something like 40 from your "real" score, which means for all you know you went from 160 to 250

Honestly based on the fact that everyone in this thread seems to get 200ish easily I think that it just biases a bit towards that level. I doubt you were actually N2 level after just Tae Kim and Core 2k.

>>
>>142624966

So, since I know the kana, from this point my steps should be:

-daily core2k
-daily Tae Kim

And then when I'm a good way through those

-Find low-level manga to read, using the dictionary and grammar resources to help me along

Holy shit, why can't you people just put something that simple in there? Instead you need 6 sections with 4 sub-sections each to say something so simple.
>>
>>142624561
>I think that it just biases a bit towards that level.
I think that bias comes from the time limits.
Like in reading section both full kana baby questions and a newspaper wall of text have 3 minute limit. Intermediates come, destroy kana questions but run out of time on newspaper ones, so everyone is left at about 200, which I guess is "good job getting all the kana shit right, boy" level.

It might be biased towards 200ish but at the same time, if you are at the point where you would do a test like this you are probably near that level anyways. Then there's the whole getting lucky on questions you know or just guessing correctly

Basically the test would need to be atleast twice as long to get accurate results, which you have the JLPT for

>The primitive meaning is another matter. The abstract notion of person so often has a relation to the meaning of the kanji that confusion readily sets in. So many of the previous stories have included people in them that simply to use person for a primitive meaning would be risky. We need to be more specific, to focus on one particular person. Try to choose someone who has not figured in the stories so far, perhaps a colorful member of the family or a friend whom you have known for a long time. That individual will appear again and again, so be sure to choose someone who excites your imagination.

3) you referenced the dictionary you were using but did not provide any stipulations as to whether the information you were providing was general or specific to the dictionary itself (note that "NHK日本語発音アクセント辞典." does not contain 東京 nor 国事・標準語 so people like the person you were responding to would not identify it as a source of disclaimer)

Wow. And you call me autistic?

I noted in the very first post that "ng" is the pronunciation of any G* mora as recorded in the NHK日本語発音アクセント辞典 which is as authoritative as source for proper pronunciation as you can find for a foreign learner.

And you think that a simple gainsay "no", which explains nothing is a good response? Holy fuck, you're stupid.

>hyperfocused on something president in your recent memory

No, something clearly written in the thread, idiot.

>厳密には標準語と東京の口語そのものは異なる言葉であるが、中央(すなわち現代日本では東京)の言葉を標準語とすることは歴史的に暗黙の了解となっている。

Your quote specifically notes that while what is held to be the standard dialect is not actually based off Tokyo speech, is is effectively understood to be functionally the same thing.

Which, while true, is completely irrelevant. There's an autistic here, and it ain't me.

And finally, I very explicitly noted that

か゜is simply the way the the dictionary chooses to encode the nasal phoneme, not that there is anything official about it.

Go take your off-brand Ritalin, idiot.

I am trying to put to put together a tool for memorising kanji / a periodic table for kanji / whatever. The idea is that a column stands for the first syllable of kanji reading and a row for the second (or lack of it). I havent decided yet how to differentiate between on/kun (Make two tables? Use two colors?) and how to treat readings of three and more syllables. Kanji with same reading will stay in one box, I hope it won't bloat the table too much.

I suppose "You went full homosexual" doesn't count as calling you a fag. You do understand that the same semantic content can be conveyed with both adjectives and nouns, right? No, you don't.

>"I meant it so clearly anyone should understand"

No, fool, the sentences were right next to each other, but you can't make the connection? And you're going to learn one of the most context-critical languages in existence? Holy shit, you're right fucked.

Phoneme: any of the perceptually distinct units of sound in a specified language that distinguish one word from another.

The final sound in "kin" and in "king" are different phonemes. I don't know what kind of definition you're using, but it isn't found in any dictionary.

you might want to learn english if you think "going full autism" and "being autistic" are the same thing

>No, fool, the sentences were right next to each other, but you can't make the connection?
no, i certainly made the connection, but that is not what you're arguing at all
"X is useful for things like this" is not a way to explicitly say "X says Y", no matter how much you pretend it is
if you weren't acting like everything was hip and dandy and were at least admitting that you were too vague this wouldn't be a problem but you're literally trying to simultaneously be vague and get the credit of being explicit, even to this point

>And you're going to learn one of the most context-critical languages in existence?
>one of the most context-critical languages
we've sure got a memer here

>Phoneme: any of the perceptually distinct units of sound in a specified language that distinguish one word from another.
lmao you actually had to look it up and you used a layman's dictionary too holy shit this has to be a joke

>The final sound in "kin" and in "king" are different phonemes.
yes, "n" and "ng" are different phonemes in english. what does that have to do with japanese though?

>I don't know what kind of definition you're using, but it isn't found in any dictionary.
no, it's found in linguistics texts though, you know, where they actually define and use phoneme correctly. even wikipedia is a good enough source for what "phoneme" means.

I don't know why that even happens when you copy and paste links. The pages I was on just had the kana in the URL, but for some reason when I copied them to the clipboard they automatically got converted to that form.
>>
'Learning by reading' is so painful, especially because it feels like I'm not learning...
>>
>>142635600
It happens because of unicode handling for URL in browsers, when you use Kanji or the Kanas in a URL it gets converted to that so it can be handled properly as a HTTP request.

Most browsers should automatically make it human-readable, firefox I don't think does.
>>
>>142635433
>By the way, if you'd rather not use those long, unwieldy links, you can delete the hexagonal part and insert the japanese that it replaces and it'll work just fine.
It doesn't even fucking matter, you sperg. You aren't manually typing the links out, you're copy/pasting them at best.

>>142635600
If you copy all but the final character and paste that, with firefox, it should appear as Japanese in the url. Then indivdually copy/paste the final character into the URL. Or better not, don't give a fuck because no one is manually typing out these URLs and it is an entirely irrelevant complaint by a fucking manchild.

It might be because you are reading things that above your capabilities.

It is quite easy to pick something up and think it is simple when in fact it is not.
Try reading children's stories and stuff written for children and working on your vocab alongside that.

Look up about extensive reading, It is recommended to read some books below your level some books at your level and maybe one book above your level of comprehension, there should be a lot of Oxford seminars on Extensive reading for you learn about the method.

You have a Japanese sentence that needs translating!

Option 1: Translate as literally as you possibly can without breaking English grammar; if it sounds a bit stiff, boring, and unnatural compared to how it sounds in Japanese, that's okay

Option 2: Take liberties to attempt to deliver the same message using natural English expression

Conclusion both ways: You get something completely different from the original Japanese line

Welcome to the world of J-to-E translations! You're now beginning to understand what makes the situation that EOPs find themselves in a bit pathetic, even assuming that they have a good translator.
